Mod Recommendations for New Players

Props to BTB for making the concept of the boring old mod list funny as hell.

'eh, it's just a constructive way for me to get all of that negativity out of my system :P

BUMP.
It's great to see new players are still visiting the MW forum almost daily, hopefully they see this first. ;)

Too much reading, I just want the essentials!
  • http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7347 ( http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:UMP )
  • http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=213 (There are also body mods for the two Beast Races: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5650, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2609, among others)

uhmmm...man, if you put Better Bodies on the Essentials list, it's mostly mandatory to put http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=2735 as well...unless you want to have really ugly NPC's with really beautiful body meshes...

There is only one BB. There are many different Head Replacers to choose from based on personal taste.

People seem to associate Better Heads with Better Bodies because of the similar title but BH it isn't actually related to Better Bodies in any way. As Pluto pointed out unlike Better Bodies there are lots of good popular alternatives to BH.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27588 For your own sake, learn to use it! Wrye Mash has everything you need to keep your mods in order and your Saves clean, along with the very important leveled list merger called Mashed Lists. Most answers given for any questions relating to your mod problems will assume that you have Wrye Mash installed.
The http://wryemusings.com/Wrye%20Mash.html has all the info on how to use it.
Trouble installing Mash? Use the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionUtilities.Detail&id=44 to automatically install the needed Python programs.

Now it's even more easier to install http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1068986-wrye-mash-thread-5/, because http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106095-wrye-mash-stand-alone/ is an executable version without http://www.python.org/. :)

Download link for http://www.filefactory.com/file/b35h8a0/n/Wrye_Mash_84DCG002_install.exe. :user:

Hello there. Thx for lending assistance to people new to modding Morrowind here.

I want to play fresh from the start, so no fiddling with save games etc. will be neccessary.
I decided to start really small and just add a total of 10 mods to the game, before I start playing.

- The 8 official Bethsda mods/plugins
- MW Code Patch
- MW Patch Project

Mwmythicmods tells me to do a number of steps with every mod to make sure mods work best together (I leave out some of the steps in between):
Adding Mods
- Install mod
- Clean .esm/.esp with TESTool 1.3 (unless cleaning is restricted)
- Adjust mod placement in established load order, if necessary
- In Wrye Mash, update the mod to Masters
[Required if Morrowind.esm is yellow in the Masters List]
- Generate Merged_Objects.esp in TESTool
- Generate MashedLists.esp in Wrye Mash (or, Merged_Lists.esp in TESTool and Leveled List Resequencer)

My question is if you really need to do this with all of the mods/plugins I mentioned above. How would you go about installing the 10 mods I mentioned above? Is it enough to make a load order or do I need to use Wyremash and/or TESTool?

Thx for any help in advance.

Pluto, there is a new thread on graphics replacers which I think you may want to add as a current WIP which was started by Sean. I like it because it brings in the most recent and basic graphic replacers. It is a good start as well for beginners.

Btw, thank you for keeping your thread active as it has helped me to find some of the more unique mods as well.

If you're just going to use the Official add-ons, then you probably won't need Wrye Mash, but I believe that they do need to be Cleaned of GMSTs (with TESTool)
(although the Add-ons probably need their Masters updated too)

If you're going to start adding more mods, then I highly recommend learning everything you can about how to use Wrye Mash.
You will then need Merged_Lists (from TESTool) and Mashed_Lists (from Mash)
If you have more questions, start a new thread or check out the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1068986-wrye-mash-thread-5/

Pluto, I was going to start a new thread but thought this was the best place to post since your thread has helped me greatly...

A freaky thing happened while doing a clean save. I was in your Sable Dragon (excellent mod btw - a must have for a new character) and decided to load a few more mods - now at 249 esms/esps. I did a clean save after I loaded my final mods, meaning I put all of my inventory in the drawer including all clothes (yes nakey) and then did a regular savegame. Quit, reloaded my savegame and then took everything out of the drawer and left for Balmora. While in Balmora I did a regular savegame again and....

the savegame was instantanous. I thought I did something wrong. While you being much more experienced MW player may have know this all along - my savegame process always took around 5 to 10 seconds after starting a new character especially after loading up MGE. It was like going back to basic Morrowind with no mods loaded. Am I the only one to experience this issue? Can someone confirm this to be true? If so, newbies like me didnt know to do this and if true, it would be my recommendation to add this to the list....

The site experiences difficulty once and awhile, but I'm sure it will be back soon.
Elric's site has been one of the most important modding sites for many years, so the link won't be removed unless it's down for good.

Have you try it lately?

I think http://lovkullen.net/Emma/index.htm should be added, because there is all of Grumpy's & Emma's and Kateri's Morrowind mods hosted. :)

I don't get why people like better bodies so much. It doesn't fit well with the rest of the world, and clips badly with armor.

perhaps a bit outside the target audience, but I got to try it out on linux recently, for real this time.

tespcd and testool works straight out of the box more or less (perhaps minor adjustments).
later versions of wine everything works including paperdoll, water, music.(music eventually added music stuff, codecs for example).

python are included in every distro but regarding mash linuxes python are too new, install the correct thing in wine=problem solved.

forget about mge and mwse, that means a lot of mods are a no go :(

and naming, think mr moonsugar got something for that over at his place :)
also solved if you use a filemanager in wine ;)

REALLY??? You can get MW to work in linux??? I never could, and I HATE windows!!!

There should be a "getting Morrowind to work under Linux" guide. And don't talk to me bout the wine pages, cuz all it does if you google "morrowind and linux" or "morrowind and wine" you get pointed to the wine apps db, and it says "problem solved" but it does NOT work and it won't tell you HOW to get it to work!!!!

Sorry for the rant, but I get emotional when I can't play morrowind :(
ST
ps, this was before I gave up and re-installed windows and then it (of course) self destructed

I've been using Morrowind under Wine on Linux for a few years now. It runs pretty well. If you are experiencing problems, the best place to get help is http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3383.

Ok, like I said, that doesn't help. I am as noob as you can be when it comes to linux. I'll look into it again, when I get a new computer. But for the sake of argument: To get MW on linux you go to that link, look for your linux distribution (mine was ubuntu 10), and open THAT link and look for elderscrolls III to download a wine config/install? Do you need to get dlls for wine to work properly? I ask cuz someone told me about getting windows dlls for wine.

ST
ps, THIS is why I suggest a guide for MW on linux
