Mod Review Series

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:16 am

Something I've always wanted for my own mods is for someone to review one of them.

When I was starting out in '06 I remember seeing an article written by a modder reviewing some of the other mods on the site (Oblivion Source, before it became inactive).
I remember thinking "wow that would be so cool if someone were to review my mod". Since the site wasn't that large at the time, and there weren't a massive number of mods I was lucky enough to actually get a written review.

The review was very structured. The reviewer plays the mod for a time and then describe what it does. They then go on to discuss what they liked and disliked about the mod. Finally the gave it a rating under a number of headings: Fun, usability, polish, etc.

I did some research and I cannot find a reviewer who has uploaded short, concise reviews.

I have some free time and I intend to make some reviews. I've a few mods that I'd like to review myself but I'm also wonder what else would you, the community, like to see reviewed?

Aye, it seems as if almost all mod review / recommendation sites are no longer updated so don't reflect the latest alternatives and sometimes offer now-disputed advice (like some of the old Oblivion.ini alteration recommendations). Matthew Kaine's http://matthewkaine.blogspot.com/ blog is an exception. It's a fairly new site, and quite enjoyable. I've added several mods to my load order after reading a review there. One, Cava Obscura, has become, for me, a "core install". Admittedly I'd debated adding Obscura for some time. But had I not read the review I might still be on-the-fence.

As for what I'd like to see reviewed, I'm open to just about anything. (Helpful, huh?) Some areas interest me more than others, and a few things don't interest me in the least, but it's all good.

Yeah, basically that, though I never really understood the point in reviewing a graphical mod, because if people want a review of that they can just look at screenshots or watch a video of it in motion. No offense to Matthew Kaine, or anyone that's reviewed graphical mods, different people react to different things; some people don't trust their eyes and respond better to reading opinions, and specifics.

Personally I'd like to see gameplay mods, and quests reviewed. I welcome reviews on the http://www.moddb.com/mods/integration-the-stranded-light/reviews I made for Integration*... Would be nice to see some reviews for some of the more recent quests because I haven't been around much lately, and with quest mods it's sometimes very hard to tell whether the mod is very good, or the mod just has very good publicity, and authors/PR people** who are willing to vastly exaggerate, and even all out lie at times.

* Admittedly I haven't had much feedback with that. The "8" one never replied when I thanked him for the review and asked about what loose ends there were. The "10" one was mine.... I also kind of wish the guy who voted "1" would have left a review, or comment.... It probably wouldn't have been anything intelligent, or helpful but it could have been funny like: "ZOMG, it no wrk i download n game crash!"

**I know I'm kind of enthused and ramble off at the mouth sometimes, but I try to maintain a large degree of honesty and integrity in what I say.

If I may humbly offer a suggestion, I'd recommend focusing on mods that have been released in 2010 or later. It seems that most existing mod review/compilation pages stopped being updated in 2009 or earlier. So, later modders (such as myself!) have little chance to get reviewed or to have their mods added to any of the "must have" lists that are out there. And from what I've seen, much of the best work was released in 2010 or later!

I suppose you could count this as a vote to review my own mods - BEAR and (the coauthored) WEPON. But there's plenty of other worthy mods out there too!

As a point of interest, TES Alliance has just launched the new homepage and with it the http://tesablog.tesalliance.org/?cat=1 which among other things will feature regular http://tesablog.tesalliance.org/?cat=9 :foodndrink: Witty, Lillith and LadyNerevar are a few of the great contributors.

It's always nice to see people mention my blog, but I wouldn't exactly call it a review site, considering the fact that I only go into detail on the mods that I actually enjoy. However, it is a very handy reference for anyone who's interested in hearing a second opinion or recommendation. I agree with Phoenix's comment about it being a bit unnecessary to review graphics mods, which I why I usually put a lot more work into creating decent videos for those mods which I do discuss. I consider my words just as important for a number of reasons, but I know most people tend to just watch the videos when they hear it only affects the atmosphere of the game.

Also, I chime in to topics such as this just to let people know that I am interested in the community's opinions and will almost certainly be influenced by them when writing future posts. If people are more interested in mods that affect gameplay, then that's exactly what I'll get around to focusing on. I hope my blog continues to be useful, and I greatly appreciate any word of interest related to it.
