Mod support in PS3 & 360 Versions?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:31 am

Hello, this is my first post on this board. After watching the new trailer I had to get some stuff off my chest!

Will the PS3 and 360 have mod support? I know it can be done, Unreal Tournament accomplished that feat, although it failed due to lack of user dedication (which TES series has in abundance!)

I am concerned about this for multiple reasons,
A) I want to be dam near Invincible later in-game (a la Oblivion)
B) The "exploits" of Oblivion were sooo much fun (If this is edited out then I want to be able to edit it back in!)
C) The never sleep leveling tactic. ie have the skills of a level 40 but only slept enough times to be level 20
D) Plus it would be amazing to get into the mod scene (Havent been able to play a mod... ever... Im a console owner of Morrowind and Oblivion, +Fallout)

Let me know what you guys think! and Im sorry if this thread is duplicated, in my excitement I ran directly to posting this after watching the trailer lol

Nope, they already said they can't/won't do it. Mods are PC only.

edit: There is a quote from Gstaff somewhere. I'll try and find it.

Not going to happen. Too much red tape since you'd have to get both Microsoft and Sony to agree with it, which they never would. Then you'd have to have a team figuring out how to port each one.

Also, biased poll options much?

No, UT3's mods are orders of magnitude less complex than TES mods, it's not even the same sort of problem. Like, because adding 2+2 in your head is easy, calculating the inverse of cos(93) must be easy too, right?

Exactly.

Not going to happen, in any way shape or form other than official DLC/Expansions.

Well its been proven that mods work for PS3 and 360, the unreal tournament editor had options to port to console version. Which Im sure only took minimal effort to switch the output from PC to ps3/360. With that in mind, I know it would probably never happen for the 360 as theres nothing you can download for free from their store(Ive heard) And PS3 store is locked tight to 3rd party products... But that would never stop from having the mod on a usb stick and looking for it in-game to install.

Actually, theres a huge difference between the stand alone maps on UT3 (And the convertor tool was unreliable with anything beyond a certain complexity) and the mods for games like this.

Mods made with previous Beth games are intergrated into the main world. They aren't separately loaded.

edit: Also Microsoft and Sony won't allow it.

Several things wrong with your post.

1. As PhYoshi already said, mods for TES are several times more complicated than for UT3. Big technical hurdle there. And no, porting is NOT as simple as "oh just use a flash drive". I can't even begin to tell you just how much is wrong with that statement.

2. Free DLC does exist on Xbox Live. It's entirely up to the developer whether they want to offer it. Mass Effect 2 had a good chunk of free DLC. However, on both PSN and Xbox Live, the only user generated mods that are supported are things from map editors and such that are bundled with the game (Little Big Planet, Halo's Forge mode, etc), which are much more limited in scope and ability than the Construction Set.

Never going to happen, it's impossible and us console gamers need to learn to accept the facts. Setting aside the abundance of legal issues, consoles flat out wouldn't be able to handle most mods out there. Just think about all the mods that push the PC to extremes, and then imagine the 360 trying to do that. Impossible.

We like seeing the mods that are made by the community, but we have no plans to make them available as official releases.

Similar to Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3, the tools for Skyrim are PC only. There's no plans to release a version of the Creation Kit on consoles. If you're into modding, we suggest you go for the PC version.

How many times we have to go through this discussion?
Mods and Multiplayer maps for Halo or Far Cry 2 are different thing. Mods modify existing content, but yeah there is also mods what add new stuff like dungeos and all.

I have to say that I have nothing against having Mods on consoles but there is just some issues what makes it impossible.
Lets forget all that Sony/Microsoft preventing mods, that is something what I hope everyone knows by now.

1. First of all. Mods are not optimized for consoles, some new models have too high texture res or too many polygons. This will cause performance issues.

2. Mods tend to take a lot of space from your drive. I installed simple item mod few days ago, and it took 775Mt space from my drive. And I have currently around 40 gigs of mods
for Oblivion installed. More than average 360 hard drive can handle.

3. Conflicts tend to ruin your game experience unless you have tools like mod managers. Consoles wont have these, and you are forced to run only limited number of mods at the same time.

4. Construction Set wont just work on consoles. And it would require a lot of work for Bethesda, Sony and Microsoft to host all mods what are available for PC users to their own servers. I doubt that they will just
let people download mods from "Skyrim Nexus".

that is just some of the issues what prevent this. Not that consoles are worse option or anything. They just are not made for running third-party mods.

I've played oblivion and morrowind on Xbox and PC, toyed with mods a little bit on PC. Even if bethesda were willing, then i doubt microsoft would allow much creativity. they don't even let you go on the internet on Xbox's. Sony maybe... but probably not. so no. then how do you get the mods to the console? nice easy way to sneak in account hacking :P

and bad poll options.

Dam you all for being logical lol. I guess I will just have to hope for "exploits" aka easter eggs on PS3 version...

Heres the thing most modders would come to the realization that if they could port their mods over to the consoles it would hurt the sales of the PC version heck even make having the PC version would be pointless, as it's main advantage is gone....therefore they probably wouldn't.

Also mods are made around HIGH end comps so even porting them over would require an overhaul of every mod.

There should be mod support. There won't be though. 'Tis a shame but eh, nothing to be done about it.

Yeah, as previously stated, the legal hurdles would be tremendous. Plus, there wouldn't be a way (Assuming the new CS is like previous ones) to build new models or create new textures. It would only be able to pick up and place objects. Script writing using a game controller would be awful too.

Modding is *an* advantage of PC gaming, not the advantage. I doubt there are many people playing entirely for mods when there are so many other advantages.

Regardless of whether it was allowed, and even assuming the technical hurdles were overcome, the consoles simply don't have any spare room for more content. It simply cannot happen.
