Mod that allows Ambient Occlusion

Post » Fri May 07, 2010 5:10 pm

Edit - I should put a disclaimer here. I'm not suggesting people should use that first mod, it's rubbish, I'm only linking it because somoene was asking about it. It reduces your frame rate pretty drastically, introduces about a million artifacts, and does little more than make the entire game (including the hud) look like you've got an ever shifting layer of vaseline covering your screen. Check JCCool's reply if you want to know how to use SSAO properly.

I know next to nothing about all that. And sadly I cant force Ambient Occlusion through the Nvidia control pannel for NV

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34868 let's you force SSAO on but it's artifactastic (for me at least) and it'll half your FPS if your not running quadcore/multi card setup, awesome for screenshots, wonky for actual gameplay. Looks nice but it's just not worth it unless you've got FPS leaking out your ears. The same can be said for virtually all of these "shader improvements" with the possible exception of http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35589.

Using a DOF mod (there are a bunch of them with differing levels of fuzz) will give you a fairly flawless (if highly subjective) improvement with a comparatively small performance hit. Really though, if you want more wow for no performance hit then just use http://lh6.ggpht.com/_z1odMghQc7A/TNL_mlLptkI/AAAAAAAAAG0/0WDs99pKNmM/s1152/ScreenShot26.jpg. Does more to improve the game than any of these half assed shaders.

You can force AO at the driver level with Nvidia cards, but you have to use Nvidia Inspector to change the AO hex values to be the same as those used for FO3. Works great with little slowdown for me.

I'm sure you can do it with nhancer as well but I havn't tried as I don't have a huge amount of spare performance laying around and non native SSAO is notoriously performance heavy.

The work as well as they do apart. Fellout just changes the lighting, removes some browness, adds some blackness. The "Depth of field" mods aren't actually depth of field, they are progressive gaussian blur type effect (real DOF focuses on the cursor and blurs things outside a certain range ala Crysis).

No reason not to use both of them if you like how they look.

"Depth-of-field" mods that don't focus on the cursor don't even deserve to be called depth-of-field, they're nearsightedness-simulators :| :)

Should a depth of field mod lower my fps at all? Using pyDoF mod and makes my fps go from 60 (Vsync) and then skip down to around to 51, then after a sec or two, go back to 60, but it stutters more, even with very subtle DoF. Also, is ssao off by default and the game really isn't meant to be played with it on?

If it's just a blur type mod (I'm going to stop calling them DOF because they aren't regardless of what the authors have named them) then the performance hit should be fairly minor, but not unnoticeable, especially if you are already reaching your limits in terms of what your PC can handle. As for SSAO, yes it's off by default because it looks terrible. If you don't move and just take screenshots then it looks awesome, but when your moving around it flickers and twitches and glitches out all over the place and on top of that it'll cost you 40 FPS.

Ohh a thread dedicated to me XD I feel special, lol.

If I am looking at piss poor performance then Ill pass. Pretty graphics, as much as I love them, is not worth watching a power point slideshow for.

And that pic is freaky fantastic. Looks like a ghostly monster like from Final Fantasy Spirits Within. (BTW, what that in lower left?)

Anyhoo, thanks for responding even if the news was not great. :goodjob:

Well like I said, you can get a fairly major upgrade just with Fellout and a horizon blur and it costs you about 5 FPS (zero if you just use Fellout). It certainly makes the Strip look pretty epic at night.

As for the thing in the lower left...it's the same thing that's attacking in the distance, just with some rather poorly calculated occlusion. It's just a rat otherwise.

Use driver level AO and the game will look great and run great. Don't use the enbseries mods.

Driver-side occulsion IS native occlusion. Unlike ENBseries, driver-side occlusion is done properly. However, due to Fallout 3 and New Vegas being different games with slightly different engines, there's a small chance of bugs. Furthermore, drive-side occlusion will slow it down a bit - but certainly nowhere near as much as ENBseries' "fake" occlusion does.

I was just messing with the contrast. The "DOF" mod won't make any difference to Fellout's colours.

Still, better than vanilla. I'm sure there will be a sky retexture pretty soon. I mean it might be slightly unusual for the sky to be a little purple, but I've never seen a cloudless brown sky.

i mean i use fellout too, and have both dof complete and fellout and my sky looks purplish too..which annoys me :(

tbh, the best "sky" is the URWL one which is blue - maybe a bit too perfect as its a completely clear blue

Personally dont like Fellout. Looks unnatural to me, even more-so with NV because I actually live a few hours away from that area, and it looks nothing like that. Not that Vanilla is more realistic, but to me, looks better.

URWL was super saturated when it first started, looks quite nice now though, might give it a shot for a while. I've never been to Nevada but being hot, dry and low population I can imagine the skys get pretty blue.

THE ELDER GOD, HE IS RISEN.

I've been using Nvidia driver level AO after tweaking it to recognise the game as Fallout 3 and I don't get glitches. in NV or FO3. Is it worth the performance hit? Ehhh.....

How did you do that? I'd usually use nhancer for simplicities sake but it hasn't been updated to work with the new drivers yet.

Oh, well I don't use nhancer but there's a nice little tool called Nvidia Inspector that lets you mess with profiles. You remove falloutnv.exe from it's profile and add it to fallout3s profile. Or you could hex the Fallout 3 profile I guess, but I've not hex edited anything since about 1999 :P

Hit this site: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=330715

You'll want to set up the Elevated Settings icon.
  • Click the Thumbtack next to driver version to get into the advanced settings.
  • Then click the second to last icon in the toolbar - Create a desktop shortcut for more advanced elevated settings mode

Set up Fallout NV occlusion settings to look like FO:3.. Or add FO:NV executable to the FO:3 profile.

Be warned, this can do what nHancer can, but without the explanations.

Some of us don't have NVIDIA cards. :sadvaultboy:

I wish ATI had a way to force AO into the game. The best we can force into the game is AA. :meh: (which is better than the game's AA by a long shot)

Oh well, I planned on upgrading my card to a GTX 480 this Christmas anyway.

Thanks for the answer Ringosis.

@Rahu X- You say forcing AA is better than the games, what about the fps or stuttering? Do you lose, gain or is the difference not noticable? Also I have an Nvidia card, don't know if this would matter or not though.
