i'm going to try reproducing that glitch of mine. if it works, then it would be possible without replacing an animation.
edit. i got it working. (hopefully this doesn't just happen on my rig--i use MAO i wonder if that has something to do with it) so apparently when you have specialanims.esp, if you put a different idle animation for whatever weapon you have in your special animations folder than in the _male folder, the game uses the special animation in the world, and the _male animation in the inventory. i'll post a screenshot.

I assume next, all you'd have to do, is get the default animation and rename it to the weapon idle animation, and place it in the _male folder
