Mod tools

Post » Wed Oct 21, 2009 4:17 am

I looked at the FAQ and did an advanced search but couldn't find anything. Will this game ship with mod tools? (e.g. level creation) Will the game be moddable at some point?

From the FAQ :)

Q: Will Brink include an editor or SDK?
No information available

Sorry we haven't heard anything more helpful.

Ops. I just CTRL+F'ed it ("mod+tools") rather than reading the whole thing, sorry about that. Thanks for the answer.

Hi, I haven't heard about any mod support, but I know that some companies try to kill mods because it makes their DLC less important, even if it expands the life of the game, and brings in more gamers over a longer spand.

Either way I didn't see it talked about, or in the interviews.

I hope they support moders because they make the game fun after its already gone stale, at least in most cases I wouldn't play CS anymore if it wasn't for the zombie mods.

A race mod for this game would be sick! As well as pistol only servers etc.... so much fun possibilities with shooting and smart.

Bethesda is very supportive of mod communities, I don't know about Splash Damage but I've never gotten the impression they have issues here. However sometimes it isn't particularly feasible to release an editor. I believe Splash Damage has mentioned that maps take considerable refinement to get them to work well for all three body types and if their are difficulties on top of this an editor or larger SDK may be unlikely. However at this point we really don't have any information either way.

I wonder at the technical complications of SMART more then simply the level design aspect of it (which would end up resulting likely in maps favoring said creators favored weight)

How dynamic is the SMART system, or do they have to code in "This wall can be used to wall jump off of to reach this ledge for med or light, not heavy" which would make it quite labor intensive... and then possible issues on top of that....

another game I'd love a SDK/Map editor for is BFBC2.... :(

It would be far more difficult to simulate something like SMART but tagging every single surface that way, I think we can safely assume it is a true movement system. :)

However it would still require a lot of balancing, as you say you don't want a map to give one size special treatment (positive or negative).

Yea the maps people make will take a long time to perfect. But would be nice to see some community content :D
Then again if people make jump maps, then they could favour them to certain classes :P

e.g. tutorial maps to help you perfect a certain classes abilities

Yeah that might be an issue if they make maps more towards their class, but it would be nice to have practice maps to get used to your character.

That would get annoying, just like people who turn off certain classes in TF2. It would be nice to see a map editor. Pity PC is best suited and likely to get this stuff.

If there isn't any mod tools within a month the game will die a quick death, competitively...

.... are you sure about that? I've seen many games survive for a long time without the need for modding. This is mainly because I used to be a console gamer, so im used to the lack of mods.

Brink isn't exactly geared toward the competitive player who always plays multiplayer, they trying to blur the line between sp and mp and draw people into multiplayer, not produce a game for veteran gamers.
So they are not so concerned about the competitive league as far as I can tell from what Richard and Paul have said.

Yea, I hope so. The fun part is what excites me :D with the whole new SMART system idea :)
It's awesome when new elements are added to games, like BorderLands (Weapon generator) and TimeSplitters simple mapmaker :D etc.
These things make the game a new experience and don't bore people so quickly :)

Still I do like the idea of mods :)
