Modded FO3 or New vegas?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 7:08 am

I know there are hundreds of which one is better type threads but i havent seen many people take into consideration which one is better when the use of mods is included, as for example, 1 mod for fallout 3 blows vegas's "hardcoe mode" out of the water being Arwens realism tweaks http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7565

I own both and have modded both (so am not being biased) but feel there are so many better mods for FO3 than there are for vegas, perhaps it could be that vegas hasnt been out for as long? i dont know but i know NOW fallout 3 for me is the far superior game. Other aspects i take into account are the setting, i feel fo3's setting is so much more varied and exciting than vegas's dessert. The story also i think is better and more plausable compared to vegas's you get shot in the head and a robot digs you up when your trying to deliver something story. But vegas takes the point for craftable guns and items, also gun mods. But again this and more is possibe with mods in fallout 3. I ideally wanted fo3's story and setting with vegas's features and with mods, i believe i can. Heres the mods i use which i think make fallout 3 my favourite:

I also use NMC's texture pack and some sound mods.

I know each game has its different mods which effect different things, but taking into consideration which game you prefer when mods are used, what do you think?

New Vegas

People on the Fallout 3 Nexus still haven't fixed Fallout 3's bad plot, bad writing and mostly bad voice acting.

Tough call.

New Vegas is like a modded Fallout 3, but its entangled in Steamworks; Fallout 3 isn't, and its easier to mod. If I could get the New Vegas mechanics modded into Fallout 3 then I'd pick Fallout 3. While (as a game), I prefer New Vegas, I do prefer the environments in FO3. My Future mods will likely be FO3 based, unless I find a good reason to prefer NV. Certain aspects of NV (like Iron Sights), are insignificant to me while others are things I'd like to keep.

this. Pretty much all of the improvements EXCEPT the story/factions was alrdy doen by FO3 modders. I prefer the story of FONV but as a whole i enjoy the atmosphere/location/world of the wasteland and also theres alot more mods as frar as RP goes for FO3 since it dosent really have much of story.

New Vegas with the Nevada Project Mod & A World of Pain Mod. These 2 mods alone make it an incredibly fun game with all the exploration of Fallout 3 and The great quest lines in New Vegas.

and its easier to mod.

What? How so? NV has all the FO3 code plus other helpful functions built in (more extensive crafting system, native support for additional ammo types, etc), and it's got NVSE to compete with FOSE.

How is modding between the two games any different? I'm confused.

Well... The first thing that comes to mind is making changes and reloading the game... FO3 just loads faster; mostly because its not entangled in Steam DRM. Also, Fallout 3 lets you skip the launcher if you don't need to configure it; and just launch the game directly. New Vegas does not allow this... It always forces the launcher to run first, then you use it to start the game. Its another delay. :(

These delays add up when you are making several changes back and forth from the GECK or Nifskope.

The launcher doesn't pop up for me when I use FOMM.

and load times has nothing to do with Steam or any of that, its the game and your computer.

So yeah, modding for Fallout 3 and New Vegas is no different.

I disagree. Having modded both on my computer, I find that FO3 is easier to mod for.

*It is good to learn that FOMM allows you to bypass the NV-launcher... but what's the point? (If I have to launch FOMM)

I have modded both, and its exactly the same,.

also the launcher isn't a big deal, the fact that it launches has nothing to do with how easy New Vegas is to mod.

which is EXACTLY the same as Fallout 3.

And you should be using FOMM anyway if you mod.

Haven't played a modded Fallout 3 but I think I'd like New Vegas more simply cause of the vanilla content.
Like faction disguises, reputation, more detailed companions, a coherent gameworld, lots of quests with multiple outcomes.
It just has those things that Fallout 3 doesn't have, and while I'm sure that these things could be modded into Fallout 3 I doubt they'll be as polished as New Vegas' is.
So I'm guessing New Vegas, can't be sure about it since I haven't played Fallout 3 on the PC, but even if I wanted to I've overplayed that game and can never enjoy it again.
I just know too much about it's content for it to be fresh and intresting again.

For my own purposes, its Fallout 3 with no contest.

Primarily because the Enclave exists in force in Fallout 3.

Yeah, but usually the "validating DLC" popup box flashes by so fast I can't even read it, and my computer isn't really high end in this day and age. I'd argue that the difference here is so miniscule as to be irrelevant.

Or you use FOMM, which bypasses the launcher entirely. If you're making a mod you'll have to use FOMM to enable it and put the load order straight anyway.

FoMM is not needed to enable a mod; I use it mostly for the supplementary tools.

*Also... I never said it caused a long delay, I said the delays add up. In general I find FO3 easier to mod; easier to actually do the act of modding. When I was working on models and came across errors, I would have to constantly reboot the game to see my changes and with FO3 it just loads; with FO:NV it loads Steam first, then logs in, then loads the launcher, then starts the game after first checking for Steam.
(I suppose I could use FoMM... but then I'd have to use FoMM to launch the game ~that takes as long as the launcher and still has to load Steam).

** And this has strayed from topic; call it my informed opinion. My choice is FO3 ~to mod, and FO:NV to play modded.

I see where your coming from having modded both games myself aswell. I do also think FO3 loads quicker OVERALL than vegas does.

 true, although i was never a fan of them.

But i do like fallout 3 more than vegas for some reason, fo3 hooked something in me that vegas didnt, dont know what it just did. Interesting views though everybody. At the end of the day aslong as your happy playing a game then it doesnt matter what anyone else says, nor should it detract you from playing that game or genre.

I think that he (Lt. A.) is talking about the more numerous and easier implemented (join the) Enclave mods.

This thread is about which one you like better when modded.

Arwen has had a realism tweak mod for NV for as long as I can remember. I leave Steam on (because over half of my games use it and I am lazy), so all I have to do is click on my NVSE shortcut I put on my desktop for NV to fire right up... bypassing the launcher. FOMM is used by Fallout 3 and NV to easily sort and activate/deactivate mods at will. The only real difference between the 2 after mods is art direction, setting, and core story/quest design.

Fallout 3 took FOREVER for me to load because stupid GFWL accessing the internet so that I can play. GFWL is such a pain in the butt... and I think FO3 is the only program I have that uses it.

Are you serious?
You are so dead set against Fallout 3 your going to go as far as to say the fan made mods for it are worse than mods in NV too?

I can't believe somebody could have so much hate for a game, that's just ridiculous.
