Modded oblivion install help

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:05 pm

1. right ive learn't a bit more on OBSE and OBMM and they seem fairly simple to install, i have discovered that its best to launch oblivion through these? but through which one?

2. also for OBSE do you have to do anything once installed by copying files to main oblivion directory i believe? apart from launch game with it? same question for BOSS?

and finnaly how do you install OBSE plugins which ive heard of, is it simply copy and paste to main oblivion directory?

thanks guys

Make a shortcut to the OBSE launcher, and use that. OBSE is completely installed after you install the two (or three if you have Steam) DLLs.

http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/prep <-- covers the installation of OBSE and many commonly-used OBSE plugins

ok thanks tomlong so the obse plugins just need to be extracted into the main oblivion folder? and there installed? do they install thmselves into the obse plug ins folder?

and once all of that is installed for installing and managing mods does the obse run in the background so to speak?
same with boss is that just a background type program?

You need to put the OBSE plugins in Oblivion\Data\obse\plugins.

Not exactly like boss as obse will be running the whole time you are playing the game. You just need to make sure you are starting the game with the OBSE launcher. If you start your game with Wrye Bash or OBMM it will automatically use the OBSE launcher.

The instructions on the "Preparing for Mods" page say exactly which folder the mentioned OBSE plugins should be extracted in (to) as well as the fact that OBSE plugins' DLLs should be installed to the folder that mcc84 pointed out. If that information is in anyway unclear, please drop a post in the site's thread.

Edit: Posting here would be fine too, but as my time is limited at the moment, it would be easier for me to collect the information there.

That works fine. You only need to copy the original BSAs and the open folders in the Data folder (except for Textures) however.

Nope, and you can delete the extra stuff later if ever you want to save space.

Use the executable. It finds the default Oblivion install folder.

Yes. That is what the instructions say. You are doing just fine. There is no reason to confirm every step here. That will make the process many times longer than it needs to be...

the loader doesn't work it says it can't find the oblivion.exe, i copied the files into c:\games\bethesda\oblivion from the obse folder in C\games\beths\oblivion folder

where it says
Move the OBSE archive to the Oblivion folder - what oblivion folder?
Extract it there using 7-zip's "extract here" function
OBSE's contents are contained within another folder, so open that OBSE folder up
Copy the following: "obse_1_2_416.dll", "obse_editor_1_2.dll", and "obse_loader.exe"
Paste them into the Oblivion folder - what folder?
>> notes: when updating, when prompted to overwrite, choose "yes"

Delete the empty folder afterward - there is no empty folder!
>> notes: now that OBSE is installed, only use the obse_loader.exe to launch the game

too confused!

The folder is not empty. The step used to have users copy everything, but you only need to copy the files specified. I will correct the "empty" folder instruction.

Run BOSS only after you have installed all mods you're going to install, there's no point running it after every mod.

Nearly. Only run BOSS before any time you are going to actually play the game, or might be going to. Well, that's my take on it, anyway.

ok thank you for everyone that has posted on my thread you have ALL been a massive help, especially to tomlong for her guide. ive now installed oblivion with all dlc, installed obse, obmm, boss, configured obmm (set bsa redirection), ran boss, got shortcut for obse and using that, now gonna install UOP's, then optimised distant land max, OSR (later on if needed), then hopefully some mods!

If you follow the advice of most people on the forums, you will not install a ton of mods at one time and just hope it works in-game! You should be adding a mod or two at a time and checking in-game to make sure everything is still working correctly. Yes, this would mean running boss after each mods installation.

If you followed OBSE's instructions you should have put three files, obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_loader.exe, into your oblivion directory, not the Data folder. OBSE plugins go in Oblivion\Data\obse\plugins
