Modders, do you

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:20 pm

I can understand that with creature, NPCs , weapon/armor and perhaps housemods... but:
Seriously, if I made a town mod, I wouldn't visit it so much, knowing there is not a corner for me to explore.
If I made a quest mod, I wouldn't bother playing it because I'd already know what will be the story, how will things end...
I ask because many modders claim: "I've made this mod for myself, but I decided to share with you guys." - now I think that's a big fat ... :) because, how can you get much fun from your own creations? Don't you do it just to rise in ranks of modding community? To show your talents and be praised?
Thanks

Oh, I love to walk around in what I create. Mostly because the scripts I use make the experience of walking around feel different a lot of the times

I made my first mod because I became interested in learning the MW Construction Set, and I found it really fun to be able to create something in the game. When I wrote in my mod thread that I created the mod I wanted to play myself, that doesn't mean I am playing it myself. It's more that I made the mod I would have wanted to play if someone else had made it. And since I know there are a few roleplayers out there, I figured someone else might be interested in it too.

Most of the modders I know always keep their own mods in their modlist, and keep playing them with new chars.

I always play with my mods, admittedly that's because only one of them ever got released and they were all designed to be used by my chars anyway.

I'm pretty sick of testing the quests I created for my Oblivion quest mod so I don't tend to do those anymore, with a few exceptions of quests that are just a lot of fun (dungeon diving with Jhared Strongblade).

But the mod also adds a lot of new rumors and other dialogue things and those are still enjoyable.

I'm making a mod called Gifts4Kids for Fallout 3 inspired by Children of Morrowind which I'm definitely going to enjoy using myself too.

I haven't really made anything for Morrowind yet so I can't really talk about that.

My character's entire body from mesh to skin, and head/hair are custom. My pants are custom. I even have a mask I made. And leather pauldrons (making them was very frustrating).

I enjoy walking around unique. Yeah, even after the months making the thing.

I can see if I were to make a quest though I would be sick of it from testing. I hate testing. But I still eventually use what I make.
I spent a long time testing my character. But I just took a break before playing with it in a normal game.

Try that with your town mod you made. Just play without it for a while. It's just the stress from making it that makes you not want to look at it.
Then it's a nice big relief to finally see what you made not fall apart.

Ranks? wtf?

I basically disagree with everything you said.

The work of actually making mods is very enjoyable for me, and since only I can benefit from the creation process, than obviously I am only doing it for myself. Modding is fun and inspiring and I get the same amount of pleasure making private mods as I do when I make public mods.
When I release a mod, it is fun to share with the community and hopefully share the fun I had while making it, but I don't think too many people are thinking about "ranks" or if the mod will make them more popular.
It's about sharing fun and artistic creativity with other like minded people.

I tested my mod so much that I won't be playing it for a few months, but I keep it activated in my game, and I look forward to returning to it once I have forgotten some of the secrets and dialog, and to reflect on how enjoyable it was to create.

MY current mod project is so huge that there's tons of stuff I'll forget once it's all finished. I'm sick of playing it at the moment, but a few months from now I'll go back to it and it will be like visiting an old friend again.

I know the feeling. I just started playing Oblivion again with my mod active and almost every time when greeting a certain NPCs triggers a new quest it surprises me. :D

Every mod I've made was because it was something I wanted in my game.
Some types of mods, like quest or faction mods, that the modder probably wouldn't use for awhile themselves is usually born out of a basic want to see that idea realized in the game world.

There are better games to mod for if all you're looking for is "To show your talents and be praised". Morrowind modding isn't exactly the "hot spot" of the modding world.

Wow calling all us modders that mods for ourselves liars ... Gee thanks ....

I use all the mods that I make .... & sure I got sick of playing DNGDR by the time I released it ... but now nearly 2 yrs later ... its like" 'I don't remember making that" or "why did I put that there" or "I can't believe all those scripts worked"
