Modding and Window 8?

Post » Sun Jun 14, 2015 4:23 pm

I just started modding again since I got this new Laptop, it's a Asus gaming laptop and it runs Windows 8. I was wondering if Windows 8 could be causing issues as to when I save a file in the Construction Set by combining loaded plugins, it messes up the mod, when it didn't on the other computer which used Windows 7.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's happening to me.

I do like Windows 7, but I couldn't find a new computer which had Windows 7 installed.

Thanks in Advance,

Salmissra

Try disabling UAC and/or installing Morrowind to a directory outside of "Program Files".

How do you disable UAC? I could you install outside of program files using Steam?

Yes, you could be experiencing problems due to Windows 8. Your post does not have enough info to say one way or the other. Regardless, it is not a good idea to turn off Windows UAC for security reasons that have nothing to do with MW itself; so IMO don't.

Follow the advice to install MW somewhere other than the folder "program files" or in the other folders that Windows would like to have you put the files. You may also be having problems because the MW folder and its subfolders and files may be set to read only. If they are, change permissions to allow read/write privileges.

And doublecheck the pinned threads in the MW software forum. IIRC, despite the title, they have started including info about MW and Windows 8. I think there were some threads in this forum as well.

I forgot to say that Steam client is required for this to run, I wonder if that has anything to do with the Construction Set not doing right. I downloaded this from Steam without disks, and I brought the Construction Set from my old laptop with a removable drive. I just ordered the Disk Version from Amazon.com and I hope this fixes it.

By the way, I'm new with Windows 8

During installation, Steam lets you specify install directory.

It is just Windows' new(it has been years actually) policy to separate user files(morrowind.ini, saves etc.) from program files for security reasons. New software obeys these rules, old software can have issues. Moving Morrowind to an unprotected folder and running it as admin will ensure Morrowind can change its own files freely.

MGE, launcher, Morrowind executables can need admin privileges.

This seems to be a good tutorial for administrator troubles:
