Modifing Skill and SPECIAL Screen

Post » Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:20 am

Hey!

I've been looking around for references on how to modify or even where to start looking to modify the skills and/or SPECIAL screen where you select your skills and SPECIAL stats. If anyone has any insight that would be great. I want to modify them to look more like the original screen, and if at all possible to merge them into one screen instead of having them on two separate screens. I was thinking if this isn't possible maybe there is a way to create an all new screen that merges those two and just assign the stats from their. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I think that those windows specifically are hard coded into the game, but I am not completely sure. You could instead make a menu yourself where you select that stuff. Like you click a button for 'Strength' then it asks what do you want to set it at? 1-10. Then you add up all their skills and if they are more than total amount of points it says 'you have used X too many points' and they have to lower the values. Or something like that. Just an idea.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I guess my question then is are there any tutorials or info on how to modify the UI so I can make a custom SPECIAL/Skills selection screen? Specifically, is it possible to modify the appearance of the message object?

Can it be done? Yes!
Is there a tutorial? No!

You have to go outside the game to where the laws of the GECK no longer apply to beast or man. You have to edit the XML files directly. I've been trying to figure this out myself for a while. Check out DarN's work, he seems to be the only one who knows this stuff.

Yeah, I've been downloading a bunch of mods that modify the UI, specifically the level screens and Pipboy to try and figure this stuff out. Was hoping there might have been someone that pioneered the trail, but looks like that still needs to be done. Any advice you have would be great. I'll be sure to post what I find here.
