Modifying "NPC New Clothes" mod

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:16 pm

As a project to learn a little more about various modding tools, I decided that I would "clean up" the NPC New Clothes mod. In my opinion, there were a lot of "questionable" choices in terms of some clothing/armor choices. I think it does provide a good base and my intention is to use the 50-75% of "good" choices and change the rest. Thinking about the best way to accomplish this, I had a few ideas that I was hoping to get an opinion on.

1. For any questionable choices on clothing for any NPC's, I wanted to simply revert to the original default. I *thought* I could accomplish this easily using TES4Edit, but I'm doing something wrong. I found an NPC I wanted to "reset to original clothing" and removed the changes made by NPC New Clothes. I then fired up my mod in the CS thinking that I would see the original clothing choices. However, I'm seeing no clothes at all. I'm thinking that the CS is seeing my deletions as changes and not a true removal, but I'm struggling to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

2. I'm trying to get my head around what bash tags I would want to use. NPC New Clothes modifies faces and hair as well. I use RBP and the NPC face and hair changes with that mod (NPC Diversity - Beautification). So what I'd like to do is use the changes made by RBP for face and hair and use only the clothes changes by my newly modified clothing mod. Would I be able to use some combination of tags, bashed patch and load ordering to accomplish this?
I almost hate to post my theory (since it will probably be wrong) - but I'm thinking I would use NPCFaces and Hair on my mod, add Hair to the RBP plugin and then ensure that my mod loads before the RBP plugin. Would I have that right?

3. Would I need to add the Invent tag to my mod? Additionally, I've read that Invent only works if the original default clothing remains in the NPC's inventory. Is that still true?

Bottom line - I only want to use the clothing changes (not face or hair) on the NPCs that I felt have good changes. Then for the questionable changes, I want to just "start over" with the original look of the NPC and then make a reasonable choice. The above 3 steps were the best way I could think to do this. I'd love to hear if anyone has any better suggestions.

Thanks

For this part...if you want the original clothing...and are using TES4Edit...modify the NPC New Clothes mod by *deleting* the NPC entirely from that mod...(but not Oblivion.esm). The game will read this as 'no change.' Deleting the clothing...on the other hand...will lead to a naked NPC.

First off thanks for tackling this.

As for point 2 - This mod only handles clothes not hair and face so you should be good. Are you not seeing that?

The Inventory tag - may or may not be needed depending on load order and other mods needed. Are these clothes being assigned - assigned in a way that does not place them in inventory?

Thanks for your reply Psymon. Unless I'm misunderstanding something I'm seeing in TES4Edit, the mod definitely adds Ren's Hair to some of the NPCs. Also, it does appear to change facial details. Perhaps I'm using a slightly different version of the mod than you are using. I don't think I can directly link - but the one I'm using can be found on Nexus by searching under "NPC_New_Clothes" and it's the one by dyfed_99

And then on a completely different topic - assuming I ever get around to finishing this, does anyone think I'm going to run into any problems releasing this? Would I need to get permissions from ALL of the original authors or not? I'm thinking this might just essentially be a patch.

Thanks
