Mods Advice + FCOM

So, I am planning to install Oblivion with all of the addons and expansions. I want to use FCOM, but I had a few questions to get out of the way right off the bat. The last time I played was... a long time ago. Many many years even. I remember using several mods, and if you could help em remember their names it would be great.

What about mods that alter leveling?

Economy?

Hunger/thirst/sleep?

Archery?

UI? I remember something about a morrowind style UI.

Scripts for npcs to actually live their lives or something?

What are some other cool popular mods one might use?

This thread will be for more than just asking what mods to use, once I have compiled a list, I'll post it and discuss what might conflict with what.

Also, I am using an i7 quad core with windows 7 64-bit. So is there any issues with it in regards to playing oblivion? There seems to be for fallout 3.

What about mods that alter leveling? nGCD, combined with Progress. Some use Oblivion XP, and there are quite a few that I ahven't used but are very good. An old favorite of mine used to be KCAS.

Economy? Enhanced Economy

Hunger/thirst/sleep? Basic Primary Needs

Archery? Duke Patrick's Combat Archery (available on TESAlliance only)

UI? I remember something about a morrowind style UI. Dark DarN UI

Scripts for npcs to actually live their lives or something? Not a script mod per se, but get Better Cities. It adds more NPCs and houses in cities so that places feel like cities. I also use a customized version of Crowded roads Revamped, to have people walk the roads. Beware that you are asking for a FPS hit with more NPCs, and will need to use Oblivion Stutter Remover to get a performance boost.

What are some other cool popular mods one might use? There are tons of mods that fall under different categories: Kragenir's Death Quest, Unique Landscapes, Better Cities, David Brasher's Fighter's Guild Quests, Paladin - Hand of Arkay, TNO's mods, BFG's mods, Arthmoor's villages, Tamriel travelers. The list is endless.

Well, I just installed Oblivion, SI and the 1.2 SI patch, oblivion crashes upon load.. yay! It was the same with Fo3. Does the "bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2" fix work for oblivion? Or should I just try to use the stutter remover? Also, would adding the stuter remover now [before all of my mods] effect anything? I want to atleast see if I can get vanilla working, before I use mods.

I am on an i7 Quad Core, 6GB Ram, AMd RAdeon HD 6700 3gb Ram, windows 7 64bit. ... I think my pc is too advanced.

I am not sure why a vanilla game would crash on startup? You can try deleting the Configuration settings in C:Users\...\...\ Documents\My Games\Oblivion. The file is also called Oblivion, the game will usually make a new one if you delete the one that is already there.

I deleted the ini and now oblivion crashes before it even gets to the title screen. Before it just crashes when it goes in game. It does that thing there the sound-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d... repeats a lot and I have to reboot my PC to stop it.

My pc is brand new btw, most other games I have tried work fine, such as minecraft, sims 3 [with all esp] fallout 3 without mods [mods crash in fo3, with no explanation, which is kind of why I am playing oblivion now, since I can't play modded fo3], zdoom, varius need for speed games, etc all work fine.

Hey, I got it working, I ran Oblivion.exe in compatability mode for XP. I'll play for a bit to see if its stable.

I guess now i'll commence with the mod installing.. :tongue:

So far so good, got the unofficial patches installed with obse and the plugs recommended in that thread, no crashes. Going to start FCOM now.

Well you are missing http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=219, that much is certain, the optional files that have it as a missing master integrate elements of RBP and LAME together.

The other missing master files aren't even supposed to be active, just merged into the bashed patch. I assume the reason they are active is due to the bashed patch issue.

Load order looks a bit off too. As I recall bg balancing esps should be near the bottom, while you have them split between the top and the bottom.

non-troubleshooting related reply: Seeing as how you have RBP and LAME esps might as well add http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1234537-relz-integration-the-stranded-light-the-stranded-light-integrated-with-no-requirementsno-gameplay-changes/ onto that. Granted it doesn't require those mods anymore, so in my opinion just about any load order should include it, but having RBP and LAME just makes it even more fitting. it's immersive, lore correct, doesn't make any immediate major changes to the game, and is easy to install. Also its characters are very well written and have extremely good schedules so they definitely fit this:

Ive managed to get it working, but I am getting random crashed without any real common factors involved. I wish oblivion kept crash logs and error reports.

Take the advice of others who have more experience and have gained wisdom through trial and errors. Or go repeat them and write frantic posts. The choice is yours.

FYI: The BOSS project started a few years ago, and was initially called FCOM Helper. It's scope increased later to encompass all Oblivion mods, and now it essentially captures the sum total of all best practices of Oblivion modding when it comes to load order. Unless your setup is custom (it is not), or you really know what you are doing (you are not), follow BOSS's advice.

I suggest installing Oblivion and FCOM through the instructions listed at tescosi http://tescosi.com/wiki/Complete_Installation_Guide_for_Oblivion and http://tescosi.com/wiki/FCOM_Installation_Guide respectively. And using Wrye Bash to install your mods. See also the section on http://tescosi.com/wiki/Troubleshooting.

When I did it, it loaded a bunch of .esp files that should never be loaded with FCOM at any time, I was then scolded on these forums for using BOSS. Since then I just do everything they way I did it years ago... manually.

Anithinks, I have used those guides twice, EXACTLY as they say to the very T. The issue comes after I have fcom installed, thats when everything messes up, when I try to add new mods, one by one. The main issue is random crashing, which no one has actually addressed, they just regurgitate the same plot lines "reinstall it properly" without ever considering that it could be something other than fcom causing the issues. I have said explicitly in posts for example "I am using FastExit, and I still crash upon exit"..and the VERY next response is "Use Fast Exit to stop the crashing on exit". This would be much easier if oblivion had a log which outputs the errant code, I could fix this myself if that were the case.

Also, because people have been sending me from one thread to another, my issue is across multiple threads, what is in this one is not the whole thing.

I remember FCOM helper, it was VERY brand new last time I installed fcom.

Random crashing could be caused due to many issues - Corrupted spawns, memory overload, scripts, to name a few.

Use mods like OSR to have more memory. Have you set up your OSR ini correctly? Are you replacing the thread heap by 5 or 6, some prefer 3 or 4?

Use a clean up and pcb mod. Suggest using kuertee's clean up. Or streamline. But you have to read the readme and configure it properly. Nothing works out of the box, especially for your specific configuration.

Have you installed Oblivion outside Program Files?

Crash on exit is not really a problem, is it? Unless you lose some settings. I have yet to see this not fixed by Fast Exit 2. Are you using OBSE?

Also, who was "scolding" you for using BOSS? I need to see this for my own curiosity and learn the reasons why.

Read the troubleshooting section at tescosi. It might have a solution based on your symptoms.

I didn't use a MOD for 4gb memory, I used an .exe I got from the 50 steps thread, you just run it, select the .exe you want to extend and hit okay, there is no "ini" or anything for it. Its not even specific to oblivon. I have streamline but I haven't installed it in this instance, still waiting to work out the crashing before hand, perhaps streamline will help fix it? In my last install [few days ago] I had every single mod working together, but I still had random crashe4s, so I redid everything manually. Crashing on exit is a major problem, it causes me to have to reboot my pc, or disable my sound hardware and renable it, every single time I close oblivion. Yes, I installed outside of program files, I have UAC completely disabled in Windows 7 anyways. AS for boss, I was told its fine for general list orders, but it doesn't work with fcom because it doesn't take into account "basic" install instructions or the like. [ie. it doesn't know not to use many esps from MMM Fran OOO and others], infact it seemed like BOSS was the last thing I would want to use with fcom. I am reading TECOSI now, there haven't listed anything I haven't already tried.

OSR is Oblivion Stutter Remover, not the 4 GB LAA patch you are talking about. You'd know this if you read tescosi. Don't hurry, this is not a race. Patience is key, and so is reading the best practices if you want a frustration free game.

That crashing with your PC seems to be custom to your setup. Have you updated to latest drivers?

Once you run BOSS, it lists warnings and errors with your load order (if any). It will identify which 2 mods should not be used together and give you good advice on updates, mod cleaning etc. You should run it, (disable lock times in Wrye bash first), read the BOSS log (this is the part most people forget), and act on it.

You did not answer all of my questions above. OBSE?

Of course OBSE, I wouldn't even be able to run oblivion without it. :) And Yes, I have stutter remover, it actually, seemingly did nothing at all. I just installed streamline, and I did crash after a few minutes. I was walking along the docks in anvil and pow, crash. I'll reinstall stutter remover. And I do use boss to see what mods should or should not be loaded, only problem is it checks every esp in the data directory, and not just the ones I have activated. With a lot of mods it gets annoying rereading it and seeing what red errors apply to me and what red errors do not.

As for using boss for my loader order, the first time I used it, I installed oblivion, then fcom, then ran boss, then loaded oblivion, it crashed oblivion immediately because it was loading .esp files from Fran and MMM that you should never load. Infact it loaded every single .esp file I had in my data directory.

BOSS sets you load order. It is active file agnostic. It doesn't even know about what files are active and which are inactive. It just sets the order. If you're loading files that should not be loaded, it's not BOSS's fault.

Interesting. Well, I just installed DarnUI via the omod with all options enabled, oblivion failed to load. :/ Then it failed to load after I removed it. I guess i'll delete the ini and see what happens.

Yep, oblivion permanently fails to load. ... This is the kind of stuff I am talking about. I used the automatic/installer method of doing things, and stuff breaks my install. I have tried several times now, half the time it freezes on the intro movie when I hit escape, the other half it gets to the loading screen and hangs on 0%.

That sounds like the XML UI files under Data/menus are missing or broken. Maybe the omod left some stuff behind or overwrote a file installed by another UI mod? Try renaming the menus folder to see if it's that.

I find BAIN works better than omods. When uninstalling a mod, Bash will restore overwritten files from the ones earlier in the load order. BTW, I keep a BAIN of the original install files so I can restore the vanilla files at any time.

I'm not exactly sure how to use bain, I tried it once, I dragged a .rar over the installer tab in wrye bash, and then from there installed it. Is that the proper way to do it? This was a previous install of oblivion. [its been a few times I have started over in the last few days]

Edit: Heh, I don't have a Menus folder.

Edit: I just noticed all of the music is in mp3 format. Is there any issues in me deleting those, adding my own mp3s and giving them the same names?
