Mods before you play?

Post » Mon Jun 27, 2011 1:35 pm

Are there any mods your going to download before you even play the game? I might have them turn off quest markers, fast travel, and waiting personally.. That is if they dont have a hardcoe mode

No. I always play the game through once 100% vanilla, the way it was originally intended to be.

Absolutely not. Modding anything out before you even begin to play is just silly. I can see modding something out in the middle of gameplay, after you've already tried it and didn't like it, but just automatically assuming you won't like something and modding it out is, as I said, silly.

I won't mod anything out until I've finished the main quest, all factions, and most, if not all, side quests.

Absolutely, i'm not playing with a clumsy controller based UI on my PC....effectively degrading my first play through. I'll need my UI mods.

That is, unless its perfectly tuned for PC - which I doubt.

No one in their right mind would wait for any mods before they get into Skyrim....or even has the will to NOT start before getting mods.

In the demo there was that spell that directed you to your objective. that gives me reason to believe that there may not be quest markers. You have a choice not to use fast travel or wait so you don't have to get that mod.

I'll do my best to play vanilla, probably will, but if I come across something I don't like I will mod it.

Like perks every other level in Fallout New Vegas.

The only mod I would consider is a removal of compass/quest markers, but even then I would have to play the game inorder to see if quest directions are actually reliable this time around.

Hopefully I won't even need a mod and they'll have this toggled in vanilla.

if the UI and it's text are as big on PC as it was on xbox360(e3), then it's more like cooking the meal before eating it.

One thing with the Xbox is standard it uses a CRAP resolution. The UI on my 360 is far far far better on 1380 x 6** then it is on 1080i.

So, on a PC with far better resolution options I don't think you'll have an issue.

Umm, I'll probably do that. When I get the English version of the game, there will probably be some mods out already, and if they sound cool, I'll definitely use them. It's not like every mod changes the core gameplay. As mentioned before, UI mods are an absolute necessity on the computer, and a large UI blocking your sight is definitely not "the way it was originally intended to be".

The first mods to come out won't be big overhauls, they'll be small corrections. For example a third person camera behind the body. There's nothing wrong with using them if you think you'll like that better, and the notion that you will "gain" something by playing through the game without any mods installed is just silly.

there are a couple of small mods I plan to make quickly as soon as the creation kit is released.

I will install these as soon as possible for myself

1. Expensive Skyrim
all merchant prices increased by 2x, 5x or 10x

2. SPX Skyrim Perk Extension
Perk level cap increased so you can continue to earn one perk per level from 51 to the theoretical max level (70-80)

Definitely not. I'll play vanilla first

The first thing I'll install will be the official patch(es) which will no doubt appear with a week or so.

Mods for the second play through and beyond......

Kind of, if "tasting" is equivalent to spending 400+ hours of your life together with this steak.

Since nearly every single RPG released in the past 10 years has had the same problem of being way too easy to get rich, I would be extremely shocked if a mod to increase merchant prices is not required for Skyrim.

The first playthrough is always without mods. In Oblivion it was hard with the cumbersome inventory, but this time there shouldn't be problems like that.

Probably not
I'm not worried about playing it the way the developers intended. If I don't like the way they did it I'll change it but I've got to play it at least a little before I know what I feel needs changing
It only took the tutorial dungeon before I d/l my 1st mod for Oblivion, 1 that changed the way PCs level up

If I'm waiting anyway, I could mod a few things at start. Textures and UI mostly, or if it is the only way to hide the quest arrow.

I always play through without mods the first time. That way I can see what's wrong and begin looking for fixes for the second play through.

Very much this.

Usually, my first mods are strictly appearance related, clothing, hairstyles, etc.

98% of the time, I'll play a game "vanilla" first before modding it for the next go-round.

There are minor exceptions - like, I played Oblivion awhile after it came out, and just after playing a modded run of Morrowind. There were more than enough "OMG! Oblivion level scaling BLOWS!" comments, that I did my first play with a scaling mod. Or Fallout:New Vegas - as soon as one was converted over from Fallout 3, I installed a body mod.... which was purely cosmetic and modified nothing that I didn't already know all about (since the bodies in FO:NV were the same as in FO3)

Hmm, odd. I've never noticed being "too rich" in games. Probably because it doesn't bother me if I have lots of unused cash lying around - not having anything to spend it on isn't really an issue. Probably because the games where you have "lots" of money? There isn't anything you need to buy anyway (after the first few levels) - you get everything useful from looting. Money's just a "score" you can use to trade brags with people.
