Mods to bring light to the darkness

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:27 am

So, I recently tried out the http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9250 mod, and it's pretty great, darkness is very atmospheric. However, darkness is also dark, and there's no point in everything being dark if nothing contrasts that by being light.

The existing lights look fantastic, of course, which leads me to ask my question: Where can I find more lights?
In the same way that Street Lights adds to the darkest of nights quite excellently, what else is there?

Effectively: Lighting is awesome, so how about a list of lighting mods?

There are some mods that alter the pipboy light to be brighter, or a different colour. I don't know of any in particular as I'm using Arwen's Realism Tweaks and that comes with its own pipboy light changes already. But it's definitely worth looking into.

Other than that, I don't know. There are some night vision mods of course, but it doesn't sound like that's what you are looking for.

Yeah, I'm talking pretty much purely aesthetic mods, here. FWE does include night vision, I believe, but where's the atmosphere there!

Yeah, that's exactly the sort of stuff I'm looking for - just not that, because I already have it :P

Also, the add-on is not needed as it is part of the main mod now (that just adds lights to the whole wasteland)

This mod does make streetlights - wasteland obsolete.

So, that can free up a slot in load orders for people if they are using both together :D

Anyways, you might consider the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13490 mod by Ares1 on Nexus. It just makes a respawning create of them by Rivet City, so no direct integration, but it would let you toss them about where you wanted as you went through the game, so if you decided a location needed some, you could drop them in. Best I can do for ya

So it is - I updated and didn't see that.

See this is a perfect example of the case against mod packs. Street lights has been around for a long time and only recently got a great update. If included in a mod pack - you'd have to undo what the mod pack installs in order to integrate the update. Or live without.

Indeed, mod packs remove the modularity from mods - a huge loss when we have such a flexible modding structure to work with!

Anyway, on-topic I've found this nifty http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15003 mod, and while it has a few issues (As would anything attempting to shoehorn directional lighting into a game that doesn't really support multiple lighting sources, never mind a decent lighting engine) it really adds to the atmosphere in the new very dark DC underground. Excellent stuff!

Not sure where the light is coming from. Could possibly do with a flashlight model to go with it, but that might get a bit doom 3, and I don't think any of us want that.

I've not used that one but have used (and I guess still do) http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9084, but there is a problem with it. It throws some kind of mesh out and it will set off traps if you shine a light on them (mines, wires, etc).

so you might want to test that mod too to see if it does that.
