Do mods die over time?

I'm not sure how modding works but if i won't have access to the game for a few years, what happens? Will i not be able to find them and download?

Mods will sometimes get taken down by the author.

They can also get abandoned (which happens more often than not), while other mods update afterword, which can break compatibility.

Also, most mods are hosted on Nexus, which is a third-party site. I don't see Nexus going anywhere, but if you are talking about a matter of years, who knows.

A lot of things can happen over the course of years. If you want to be safe, download the mods you want now and store them on a backup external harddrive.

Mods uploaded to Nexus will be available for a long time, unless the author decides to remove them. You should not worry about not finding your favourite mods as even if they're no longer updated, they're still on the Nexus.

Or until Nexus goes out of business and shuts down. As unlikely as that seems, it is not impossible. I'm sure people thought Planet Elder Scrolls would be around forever back in the day. Also mod author's taking down their mods is not uncommon. Just look at what happened to Wyrmstooth. Very popular mod. Poof gone. Safest thing is to keep a current backup of any mod you think you might want to use in the future.

Have to agree on the backups. I didn't play for around three years (while I was playing Rift), and if I hadn't had all my old mods (and save games) when I picked Skyrim up again last fall, I know I would be missing some mods that are just not around any more.

Tell you the truth, I'd back up the entire Steam folder, game install, and downloaded mods plus save games on an external hdd and store in a safe place - like a safe deposit box. Wouldn't hurt to do an entire machine backup or clone your drives really.

Nexus doesn't take down mods unless they violate the TOS - or the author removes them.

But it would be prudent to download and keep copies of any mods that are valuable to you safe somewhere.
