Mods for consols

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:56 am

If this was to come to fruition, I imagine Sony/MS would want compensation for this. And you can guarantee that each mod will probably cost you 200+ MS Points (on the 360 for example), or most likely be dependent on the file size, so larger mods cost more money.

To be clear, the first option is something we've wanted to do for some time. This is an excerpt from our Fallout 3 fan interview with Todd

If/when it happens is still in the air. It'd definitely be cool to see the amazing mods you guys make on consoles.

Thanks for taking the time Gstaff to post here, hopefully someday we may be able to see this happen.

Here's hoping anyways, it would make me reconsider buying an expensive new PC.

lol, he actually believes this :lmao:

sadly you are right. the game is not being made for pc. it IS being made on pc but they have to limit what they can do so it will run on consoles, hence it's actually be made for consoles.

One thing I'd assume is that if Sony/Microsoft shows interest the other is going to try and get in on it too or gain exclusive rights to it

I'm more comfrotable with using my PC to play games but one day I'm sure console players will finally see what a big deal mods are.

New quests, new areas, new dungeons, new NPCs, new weapons, new armour... that's an awful lot of modding possibility there.

If you wanted to make unique new weapons or armour you would need to be able to do textures, which would require adding or changing those files, which I doubt would be possible on a console...

Why wouldn't you get the PC version...the game is made for it.

Gaming rig PC's can become prohibitively expensive to keep up to date with high end games that get released. For those people that want to streamline their required purchases for games, consoles make sense. To most non-pc gamers, mods don't even factor into the decision making process of where to put money for gaming.
I would personally like to have a pc capable of running games like Skyrim as well as future titles down the road. For now money isn't abundant, so I'm stuck on console (PS3).
One thing is for sure, if consoles are going to embrace (not halfheartedly) mods for Skyrim, PS3 better get there first. I would jump to 360 in a heartbeat if Sony puttered around about mods while MS had it fully supported, & that's not even bias due to the network outage.
Sorry to get off topic.

If they can find a way to make a continued profit by allowing mods, then yes it will happen. I doubt we will see free mods like on the PC, the greed will get the better of them and they'd need a way to make money to offset the amount they'd have to spend on screening mods for illegal content and possible hacks.

I just hope, that if it does ever happen, it will not sign the death warrant for free mods on the PC.

I don't think Sony and Microsoft will allow it (they love money).

Agreed! If free mods on pc die off to pay 4 mods it'll drive up the cost on any (potential) console mods as well.

The point made by Bethesda is that mods are essentially no different from DLC in terms of the files and their contents. So if it can be done in DLC for console it can be done in a mod for console.

About the only possible limitation I can see is modders might have to pack up the art assets in BSA files. There are already third party tools that allow that.

I cant really see why we shouldnt be able to mod the console version, see as it allready works with Oblivion (if you know your way around pc and downloading programs). There is many ways to change magic, spells, skills, atributes, armour etc. I can change the landscape yet tho, but everything else works just as with pc.

One of the biggest influences for me is Mods. I played OB on the 360, and MW on PC.

I truely hope they can incorporate mods and that MS/Sony aren't going to try and charge for every unofficial mod :brokencomputer:

Perhaps in the next TES game, consoles could get a "map editor" like in the Halo games. It loads up, gives you the entire world, then you can add/edit it to your liking. Then in the main menu of the game, just go to options, mods, and load what you made. Even then I'd imagine that would be pretty limited though.

You software developers are so much more imaginative than Microsoft and Sony are willing to be. Allowing this sort of user created content could push the envelope on what to be expected from paid dlc, and more importantly the player's power over their own gaming experience.

Hence $60 game on console in comparison to $45 on pc (using current Skyrim release date cost not including tax), a huge difference in price. I don't like paying 33% more for the console version, so the more content consoles provide/make available the less likely I will switch to PC in the near future. Mods for console games are way past due to be a reality. They can't avoid the issue forever without losing the gamers that are aware of the differences of content availability.

It would be interesting to see the results of a poll on PSN/XBL as to console gamer awareness of PC mods. If enough people know what they're missing it could be a wake-up call for Sony/MS

The biggest counter argument to having mode on consoles seems to be that it would cost MS and Sony money, and there would be a huge problem distributing them. But who said that just because a modding tool is available all the mods made must go public?
It seems the best solution would be for Bethesda to sell some (probably toned down) version of the CS on the consoles for 600 MPS or it's PSN equivalent, and then not have mods shared between console users - you only get what you make, possibly with a file share type feature for your friends. The console companies still make a bit of money, while not having to increase hosting bandwidth.
But in the end, I'm a born and bread PC gamer, and can't see any reason why your prefer the game on a console than a PC.

I don't prefer it on console. Console is what I'm stuck with for now.
What you propose would almost entirely avoid the point of making mods available for console.

Not to be rude, but that kind of response from PC users is why they get a reputation as looking-down-their-nose elitists when regarding console gamers.

little big planet, now infamous2, mods are a natural progression, and its something sony's self made, play - create - share - genre on consoles are progressing towards naturally. In my opinion its only a matter of time before one game lets you mod it on consoles to at least some extent you can do it on PC, I hope Skyrim is the first to do it.

The biggest "issue" with moding on consoles (if we look away from useres who cause the game to crash, create unstable mods etc....) is the fact that people can cheat their way to achivements ( like anybody care about your gamescore...). I have not been cought for moding singleplayer games like GTA IV and Oblivion, but then again i dont do anthing major, acctually most things could be done with console on PC. I guess you cant really call it moding, but seeing as you can go into console in xbox games i guess you have to call it moding. In GTA IV you can cheat by adding like 10000 heath points, max ammo, max money etc this can make it much easier to achive achivements...

The only major changes i have made in Oblivion is spells can summon more than one creatures, changed some in-game spells. There is no unstability or crashes.

And there's also a good reason console gamers have a reputation as technophobes and idiots. Because the extremes are always the most noticable, and some people automatically assume that what they notice is all there is.

Don't generalise, it never works.
