Mods for the consoles

Post » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:32 pm

One of the things I envy the most about PC gamers is the modds. Now I know that the consoles won't be able to MAKE mods, but I'd like to be able to transfer mods from my PC to my Xbox. Would this be possible, or would the modds have to be made explicity for the console in question?

I know that console gamers will likely never get Modds, seeing as how the consoles are made to satisfy mainstream/casual gamers and little else. But a man can dream can't he? A man can dream...............

I don't think that's possible.

I mean, DLC and stuff exists, but if you break your game, it might get pretty messed up.

Yes, and this has already been brought up a thousand times before F3 and FNV already. The chances are you'll have to settle with DLCs.

It's a matter of Sony and Microsoft allowing it, it is possible.... if the two weren't money hungry monsters.

I suppose from a purely technical standpoint its at least theoretically possible... but its never going to happen. There are a ton of other issues, the least of which is the fact MS really does not allow any sort of user modifications (aside from in-game maps and such) to be transferred on or added to their network. Thats less of an issue on the PS3, but again its only one of many issues.

MS appears to be staunchly opposed to this and while there are a few examples of this on the PS3 Sony seems to be, at best, uneager.

There are two big problems with Elder Scrolls mods. First, they get inserted in to the world rather than being stand-alone sections. If you have individual levels you aren't increasing the workload of the game but with a game like Oblivion the console has to support the entirely of the original game plus the additional modded content. Considering that Bethesda's games already appear to push these consoles' RAM capabilities to the maximum that's a tall order.

Second, the scripting system of the Elder Scrolls is very powerful and very flexible and this gives you the ability to make tremendous changes. While this may sound great from MS's and Sony's perspective it's a huge liability - again there's a great potential to overtax the console. There's also a chance of really screwing things up, if you want to make a malicious mod (one that will cause considerable problems even if removed) it isn't all that difficult.

If Skyrim had some sort of mod support for consoles without scaling back their modding capabilities I think that would be great. However this is an area where I think MS and Sony really need to improve support on their end before Bethesda will have many options.

I don't want to discuss modding on the Xbox, but I want to talk about the possibility of transfering PC mods to the Xbox.

I don't know if it's possible, so if somebody who does mod could you tell me if it's actually possible ( from a technical aspect, not " they'll never let it happen").

From a tech standpoint, pretty much. More on that, not here.

No, it's not possible. I can't tell you how many times this has come up. Xbox is too weak, just get a job buy a decent PC and you should be good to go for mods.

Job- I'm fifteen, trying to get one

Decent PC- Have one, but always have trouble with patches, installing, and all that jazz.

Thanks everyone for answering, but I'm getting mixed answers. I think that the Xbox can do more than alot of people give it credit for, but that's not even what I'm asking. I'm asking if it can be transfered from PC to 360. Yes? No?

You already got some answers. If you insist, the thread will be closed.

Wrong. You would need the development kit to build for either. It has nothing to do with greed.

It is possible, you just need something called an X-Port 360. It's mostly for dropping random items but you can transfer the mod files to your hard drive.Of course I'm not sure if the device is legal under the terns of use though

I guess Bethesda could take a popular mod and make it a patch, but I don't really see it happening.

I wouldn't call them uneager. Frankly, I think they just don't care either way. Trouble being that games that are released across all three platforms and that have any modding support on PC to begin with are pretty much universally more popular on the 360 than on the PS3, so it's an issue where there's simply little to no incentive for the developers to bother testing and supporting what they'd have to in order to allow mods on the PS3. There's no point doing it for that system when they can't do it on the one they're expecting to make most of their sales on.

JUST SAYING... you actually CAN convert PC-made mods for Fallout 3 and New Vegas over to the 360, which means there's a good chance you'll be able to do the same with Skyrim. If you're wondering how- honestly, I couldn't tell you myself, but I've seen people do it. Check it out on Youtube or maybe try going over to the Fallout forum and asking people there.

Not if you use an online hub on which you can upload mods from the Construction Kit, then from there people can download them. Sorta like Halo 3 (but on that you went Console-Hub-Console. This would be Construction Set-Hub-Console.)
