Mods for Xbox/PS3

Post » Thu Jun 23, 2011 4:29 pm

I was playing Forza 3, and the idea popped into my head! Why not on the main menu, have all the normal stuff, like Continue, Load Game, etc. And then have another spot that says "Mods". From there, you could list them from the top downloaded, make your own mods, download mods, rate other peoples mods, and more.

I play the 360, but I have seen videos of the awesome stuff that people have made, and I really want it on the systems as well.

Tell you ideas, and i will edit the post if it keeps going, and quote your name too, i won't steal others ideas! :celebration:

Also it's a pain getting mods to work together on the PC. You can't just stick them on the consoles. You have not solved the problem.

I have heard they were working on it, I'm just thinking of a way to make it work on the system.

Actually they are trying to figure out how to make it so that you can only upload/download certain mods, for security and stability reasons. I highly doubt (considering they haven't even gotten started on paper on how to do this) that skyrim will be modifiable. Atleast another few years before they allow this most likely.

Thats just simply adding a UI to add mods. The more difficult thing to do is to get mods to run properly without crashing, and on the consoles limited hardware.

Some games on the PS3 have already allowed mods (Unreal Tournament 3 is the only one that comes to mind). It's certainly possible. The only restriction is hardware. Many of those "awesome mods" that you see for Oblivion and Morrowind tend to put a lot more strain on GPU, CPU, and RAM. Basic stuff like quests, equipment, and basic changes to mechanics (such as Levelling) would be OK, but high end texture replacers, physics mods, open cities, and so forth just wouldn't run on the current consoles.

The interface isn't the problem. I'm sure Bethesda can figure out the interface. The problems are Microsoft and Sony, security, and filtering the inappropriate or performance-impacting mods from the rest.

Whoever votes no for this is just stupid.

This would just allow all the great mods created by the TES community to be experienced by a ton of more people than they currently are.

It makes absolutely no sense for this to even be a question, because it doesn't affect PC gamers in any negative way, and doesn't do anything but add a wealth of free content to console versions of the game.

Perhaps BGS could sift through all the mods, filter out the appropriate, secure and functional ones and add them to a server? Like the rock band network sort of.

This and not to mention a lot of the big Oblivion mods require OBSE, and then there is merging patches and road records and ect. Console could use mods that only use vanilla resources an example of a big mod that does this is T.I.E as well as basic houses and adventures. We also have to deal with the legal issues of custom meshes and textures.

I have to agree. But, people aren't all logical. There will always be someone who thinks they're entitled to something because of a specific choice (a PC elitist) or just seriously doesn't get how much mods can add to a game (a consoler with no exposure to mods).

Obviously not the same, but I know LBP has fan-made content that all users can access if published to the "community." It would take a lot more mechanics than the method used for LBP, but it's a start.

"So we’re still... we have not solved -- even on paper yet -- how to handle security; how do we handle not messing up your saved games and things like that."

Basically, the desire is there, but they have no clue yet how they'll even get it to work.

I voted no not because I don't want console players to have access to mods, but because with this current generation of consoles its not practical. Although Sony has proven that they are willing to be flexible with their network (DUST 514) , Microsoft has not been willing to bend. The issue of Mods for Consoles is a lot more complex then most realize, you have to deal with content, security, stability, hardware limitations, legality, and a host of other logistical issues, Beth has admitted that they have no idea how to even start dealing with these issues so I'd rather have them wait for the next TES game which will be on a new generation of consoles that are hopefully more open.

Go ahead and call me an elitist for this stance but please don't call me stupid.

While this would be awesome (I've got a PS3) I don't see it working at any point in the near future. =/ PCs, PS3s and 360s are three completely different kettles of fish and what works on one system might not work on another, even using the CK tools. There's also the problem of getting the mods onto the consoles and keeping them working as the game gets patched. Might be best if they waited till the next one and focus on getting Skyrim on the shelves in one piece. =p

There will never be mods for the console, other than Bethesda's. NEVER.

I think mods that require OBSE (or SSE for skyrim) will be out of the question for consoles, being as OBSE is a 3rd party application.

I voted yes, good idea in theory in least. Some formidable hurdles to overcome though, will Bethesda be willing to do what is required to bring mods (with serious limitations) to Skyrim console users?
