Mods in TESO?

Post » Tue Feb 04, 2014 2:16 am

I have heard some mods will be allowed, like graphics. I remember this being confirmed in some interview i watched. By now, has anything been announced regarding mods? I think the ability to change the looks of certain armors would also be a good thing, although you will be the only one seeing it.

UI mods only that is it. So there will be no graphic changing mods.

UI mods. They are allowing you to alter the UI.

Don't expect the single players modding ability.

yes interface means that though additional ui elements might also be possible (the only ones that actually know are the devs though).

The problem with graphic enhancing is that it would be used to cheat (see through walls in pvp, a not invisible arrow pointing at someone sneaking, more obvious tells what boss xy does for his next attack etc).

If you allow modding the graphics then your system allows modified assets, checking if the assets are modified in a none game breaking way is extremely hard, while only checking if assets have been modified is relatively easy.

With UI modding, will it be possible to mod the compass to show chest locations? O.o

This would depend on what the developers allow in the so called api (an interface for information of the game running),

my guess would be no though ^^.

*as an example for an api and ui modding, you might want to create a mod which has a HUGE number over your characters head with his current hp, so you look at the api and search for a method that allows you to get the current characters hp, if there is none then you are out of luck and cant do that mod...

if there is say a method like character.getCurrentHp() then you can get the current hp with it and display it however you please.

As one would not expect them to put location details anywhere in the outgoing api datastream for modders to plot on a map, no.

This is why environmental mods will not be allowed.

Probably LUA mods like damage re counters, but nothing like the scale of the single player games. I wonder how hard it would be to implement client side modding, if its for cosmetic stuff like armor only the mod user would see it, wouldn't be very obtrusive. Then again, why pay for cosmetics in the cash shop if you can just make them yourself/download it from a site like the nexus

As others have stated, don't think "modding' as in Elder Scrolls modding, think "modding" as in World of Warcraft addons. Interface changes and tweaks, not significant changes to the content of the gameworld.

"Cosmetic" (model/skin) mods can't be allowed in MMOs because they can be exploited to make enemies more visible, to completely nullify stealth and invisibility mechanics, and in general to reveal things that are supposed to be hidden. Would pretty much destroy PvP, and do a pretty good job of messing up PvE as well.

hmm, didn't think of it that way. I guess I should've figured someone would inevitably use something like cosmetic mods to gain an advantage over other players.
