Mods tip

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 8:23 pm

I want to mod my game to make Oblivion an entirely new experience, I'm a bit bored of vanilla Oblivion. I've tried to get FCOM to work twice but both times it failed, I can't be bothered to go trough all that again. So Im looking for some easy mods which change the game in a big and positive way. What do you guys recommend?

Answering those questions would really help. I mean all of those things you mentioned are a bit subjective, and prone to individual opinion.

Easy: Well you tried FCOM, and thats like one of the hardest mods to install that there is, so just about everything under that is "easy."

Big: Some people might think a graphics overhaul, others might think something that changes the landscapes, I'd probably think something that adds lot's of interesting quests, someone might think something that adds lots of weapons/armor/items, someone might think you want overhauls, total conversions, new world spaces, etc..... Hell someone might even think you want bigger briasts.

Positive: I suppose you mean that it is well integrated in the world, it fits the story/setting, it adds without doing something silly like having a guy wearing Master Chief's armor.... Basically immersion, right?

I want to mod my game to make Oblivion an entirely new experience.

Why not try Nehrim? It's a completely new game created on the Oblivion engine, and with it comes whole new main quests, environments, voiced dialogue, and creatures. The only down side is that the voices are in German, but that's what subtitles are for! You can find more about it http://www.nehrim.de/indexEV.html.

Or why not OOO? Easier to set up than FCOM and awesome in itself.

First of all, thanks for all the answers.

@HeyYou
The mod looks good, I might try it. I wonder about 1 thing though. The level scaling is off, does this mean I can run into creatures WAY stronger than me and does this mean that I can steamroll to certain quests because they were made for a level 5 character?

@Phoenix
Have you played Oblivion already? I've played it several times, and completed a big part of quests/guilds at least once. Never the main story though, damn gates.
What sort of things interest you? No idea actually. Im a bit clueless thats why Im looking for some suggestions.
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?) Mixed characters which are capable of using sword, bow and sneaking and magic as a supporting role only. I like things being somewhat more RPG/realistic but not to the point where my character needs to eat every couple of hours.
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.)Im looking for a mod that improves the game/overhauls it. I mainly want to play something different/better than doing things I've done several times now.
What did you not like about Oblivion? What did Oblivion not have or need more of? It could have more realism, like more realistic behavior of NPC's. I find the amount of weapons/armor lacking. Money is way too easy to gather. Gates bore me to death.
Male or female character? Male

You posted quite some mods and links so I'll take a look into them.

@Matthew_Kaine
Looks very good. Im definitely gonna check that one out. Im OKish at German, so it shouldn't even be too much of a problem for me.

@Arkngt
How is this mod compared to Tamriel immersion?

@Arkngt
How is this mod compared to Tamriel immersion?

Haven't played TIE so can't compare. OOO adds a lot of modded weapons/armors, new questlines, new enemy factions, bosses, handplaced loot in dungeons etc. It's quite hard for low level chars, but gets easier the higher level you have. It does more than I can say in a few sentences so check its readme, but it fixes two of my major niggles with the game:
1. That the world is leveled with the player, i.e. in vanilla you'll face enemies that are on the same level as the player, whether you're Lvl 1 or Lvl 50. OOO is more unleveled but not entirely so, enemies are generally level capped rather (i.e. they won't go lower/higher than certain levels).
2. That everything is random, i.e. you'll find the same loot randomly in every dungeon everywhere. OOO has lots of handplaced loot, making it more meaningful to explore around.

TIE is more unleveled than OOO so even harder on lower levels if I understand it correctly. It's geared for thiefs/sneaky chars, but can of course be played with other chars as well. Not sure how/if it deals with the second point.

Check out http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/820948-scaling-overhaul-comparison/ for a comparison of different overhauls.

Just try TIE while downloading OOO in the background. Use Wrye Bash's installer in case you like TIE or something else more than OOO.

Problem solved.

You posted quite some mods and links so I'll take a look into them.

1: Well you might want something new then.Nehrim, Elsweyer, some of the quest mods I listed. Don't worry most quest mods don't have the generic dungeon grinding like the Oblivion gates.

2: I think I may have to expand this question a little. What I meant was: Do you enjoy action, puzzles, romance, cerebral stuff, necromancers, dragons, flying, sixual stuff, fire, etc. Basically whatever genre types you like and whatever your obsessions/fetishes/etc. might be. Me? I have a thing for cerebral stuff, romance, interesting characters, Choices and consequences, multiple solutions, little details, hidden dialogue tidbits, and reactions.... Basically western RPG type stuff.

3: Might want to look into some combat mods... Deadly Reflex and Unnecessary Violence are the most popular ones, but they're also pretty hard to install.http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1053088&hl= might be good too. The http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=931523&hl is also very good

4:Well the current recommendations of OOO or TIE are good. You may also want like some guard/crime overhauls, magic overhauls, disease overhauls, and stuff like that. Some mods like that are on my "essential mods" listed earlier... Also, definitely quest mods...

5: Not aware of anything that makes NPCs more realistic... most mods I see that try to, just end up making it worse. ( Like mods that add more NPCs to cities because the cities look unrealistically empty, and.... all the NPCs they add are generic nobodies with no dialogue, or personality, and they have a cookie cutter daily schedule. Integration is a quest mod that has several bases, and at the end there's a town too. All of the characters are well written, they have individual personalities, and very diverse schedules. It won't fix vanilla NPCs, but it should give you a lot of interesting characters to savor.
OOO, Armamentarium, Cobl, and http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1043692-the-demonic-list-of-leveled-list-mods/ in general will help you add a lot more items. Alsohttp://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167983-list-integrated-items/
For gates... well if you hate generic repeated landscapes the Unique Landscapes will help you enjoy the Cyrodiil landscapes more. I believe there was a mod diversifying, and making Oblivion gates more interesting, but I don't think it was ever completed.

6: This one is mostly just in case you asked for armor or whatever. The mods in the two above lists have plenty of male armor/clothing.

Thank for all the help again. I think I got what I was looking for. I'm getting OOO with other mods like Deadly reflex, Midas magic and some smaller mods.

So there are no mods that make gates more fun?
