Mods you recommend, and why?

Post » Sat May 11, 2013 5:34 pm

Hello, I was just curious what mods you love and use and recommend? And why? Also, I am interested in vampire, and werewolf overhauls as well.. anything to make vampires and wolves seem like real vampires and wolves, (you know, jumping far distances, or high distances, increased speed and strength, make them look better, etc.) Also, anything else to add cool content to the game, also any mods that add content specifically for werewolves and vampires, like covens, clans, etc. Otherwise, what other mods do you recommend? I've played the game through the main quest and much of the guild quests, but not 100%, and not on PC.. So I'm a new PC user and would like to know which mods, in your opinion add the most :)

Thank you for your time.

Interesting npcs: Aside from unique quests, superfollowers that comment at your actions, it also adds many many many custom voiced npcs(some are really good).

The upcoming falskaar expansion(similar to dragonborn dlc) is worth it.

If you want a dlc similar experience, check out Wyrmstooth.

in fact, just look at my siggy for big mods and overhauls

Way too many to list, but SKSE goes at the top, closely followed by SkyUI and the Unofficial patches (Skyrim, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, Dawnguard and Hi-Res, depending on what you have installed). If you've got horsepower to spare, there are lots of good retextures and lighting mods out there. SkyRe, Frostfall and Realistic Needs and Diseases make for an interesting gameplay experience. I do not recommend them if you have not played completely through at least once or twice with plain vanilla. The remainder are either eye-candy or handy utilities that are very much dependent upon the likes/dislikes of the individual gamer.

Besides the ones already mentioned, I wouldn't be without Smart Souls which prevents soulgems from being occupied by smaller souls - so if you cast soul trap on a creature with a petty soul and you have no empty petty soul gems, you'll just get a message that you didn't have the right size soul gem, rather than a petty soul going into a bigger capacity gem.

Oh god yes. I have this one, and I'd probably never remember to list it on a "recommended mods" list since it just makes sense and I've grown so used to it. I don't even remember the days of having that problem.

Yes, it's one I only really notice on the couple of occasions where it's not worked after Bethesda have released a patch and you then notice how wrong the vanilla method is! Then I'm twiddling my thumbs for a few hours waiting for the mod to be updated. It's the way it should have worked in vanilla and it's completely unobtrusive.

I also recommend Ars Metallica which allows melting down of many weapons/armor and some appropriate clutter items to make ingots using a smelter, and Run For Your Lives which makes unarmed citizens run indoors during dragon attacks, rather than trying to punch a dragon to death with their bare fists. Both by Arthmoor. Another good mod of his is 'Live Another Life', an alternate start mod which isn't essential but is great if you like to roleplay different characters or want to skip the Helgen intro if you're fed up with it.

Alternate Start - Live Another Life

Essential if you want to roleplay something else than what vanilla Skyrim pushes on you.

No Poison Dialogues

Fixes a small, but very annoying aspect of the game. I frequently use poisons on my weapons and the confirmation menu got old very quickly.

Footprints

Adds a nice touch to the visuals that can also enhance gameplay, especially if you play as a hunter.

Headtracking

Another little nice touch to the visuals, I think it is essential if you mostly/exclusively play using the 3rd person camera.

Wyrmstooth

A very nice quest and new land mod with good voice acting.

Vilja

If not the best, then one of the best custom followers currently out there.

I don't have anything specifically for vampires and werewolves,
but I do have a lot of other things including adjustable jump height in SkyTweak.

theres like over 200 options in SkyTweak alone, and thats ignoring the other mods I also keep on that page, surely you will find something of interest.

Then of course there are the obvious ones:

Unofficial Patches

Never play without. The simply is not a single excuse to leave them out.

SkyUI

Skyrim has the very worst vanilla UI in any game in the history of gaming.

Categorized Favorites

Serves as a sort of extension to SkyUI since it doesn't touch favorites menu yet.

Better Vampires

A modular vampire overhaul. Combine that with Dawnguard and you realize how awesome it is.

Dovahbear

Just in case human followers aren't your thing.

Sutvaka Fortified Estate

Gives you a player home with guards here and there and a crafting area, among others.

Tropical Skyrim

Trust me, if you hate snow, this is a godsend.

There's more, but I'll leave this as a start.

Expanded Towns and Cities - Makes villages like Riverwood actual villages instead of clusters of four to six houses. Really adds to immersion. Has a Morthal expansion plugin too.

I've used Better Vampires for well over six months - fantastic mod. Another Vampire overhaul mod worth noting is http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17077.

Gopher's done a couple Werewolf mod video reviews, found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I_19XQzEbQ&list=SP96C073B0B8BFC01D and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvIaa9rirK0&list=SP96C073B0B8BFC01D (he's done some Vampire mod reviews which are worth checking-out as well - search through his videos).

Good catch on Categorized Favorites, Kirottu. You couldn't pay me to play Skyrim without CFM (and I'm facepalming myself for not mentioning it earlier). I'm using a different configuration than vanilla CFM (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/18955) and love it. It doesn't play exceptionally well with Headbomb's pseudo-vanilla naming conventions from "Better Sorting". But it should play nicely with most of the other major mods out there and it's easily editable with Notepad if you find something it doesn't handle.

(EDIT) I might also throw in a mention of Elys' Uncapper (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1175), with a caution that tossing it onto an existing character had some unexpected side-effects for me, but it worked great from a new game.(/EDIT)

Run For Your Lives, When Vampires Attack, and the Unofficial Patches are all essential for me. Fixing bugs and keeping my villies safe from dragons/vampires.

Also SkyUI, anything by OpticShooter and isoku, and Pure Waters are all in my load order to for coolness and better visuals.

Cant think of any more off the top of my head!

For visuals, I highly recommend SMIM - Static Mesh Improvement Mod. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8655/

"A Quality World Map" and "Better Dialogue Controls" are both nice. The first is self explanatory. The latter makes NPC dialogue selection less fidgety.

And if you're like me and think all the stock helmets are fugly, have a look at "Armored Circlets".

@SamA92 and Pistolero - any chance either of you have used South Dragon Bridge along with ETC? It seems like it would be a conflict because of the Dragon Bridge changes made by both mods but I'd love to be able to use both. I am going to see if I can somehow merge them to make them work but if anyone knows if this is doable and if there is anything special that needs to be done to make them play nice I would appreciate the guidance.
