Molerat disease = bulldookey

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 2:53 am

Sooo I was wearing power armor and got bit by a molerat and contracted the disease.

Crap.

I reloaded and was more careful... but Dogmeat got bit by a molerat and > I < contracted the disease. (WTF!?)

Yeah. Crap.

I reloaded, sent Dogmeat home and snuck around (in power armor) with stealth boys and a suppressed 10mm. "Oh! A protectron! I'll let the robot deal with the mole rats!" The protectron gets bit by a molerat and > I < contracted the disease. (WT...! WTWTF!!!!?)

Supersized crap with dingleberries on top!

And the only way I can cure the disease is to let a little kid die.

Yeah... now I'm pissed. Somebody needs slapped.

There is a Mysterious Serum in another quest which is said to have a curative effect on it.
There is more than one, loot the raiders near that quest's end, so you can turn over the one you find early in that quest.

Mysterious Serum doesn't do crap for the Mole Rat Disease.

Then again, the Mole Rat Disease doesn't do crap either. I doubt you'd even notice 10HP is missing if it didn't tell you.

I contracted the mole rat disease in that mission, I didn't notice it until I saw a similar thread to this one (48 hours of game play later). It is pretty inconsequential.

Wow, i didn't even know there was a Molerat diseas!!! Quite as cool little detail they added to the game in my opinion.

However, I think you should be able to get rid of it. Make the cures more common but, not too common and make it so you have to do a few things maybe, like tha vampirism cure on Oblivion (not sure if it was in Skyrim as I WAS a vampire).

So can you not get rid of this at all? And can you miss the opportunity to find the cure?

I'm positive I must already have the disease, as I've been bitten by tons of Molerats

Oh, no, it's from a quest where you fight diseased Mole Rats in Vault 81. And there's only one dose of thecure.

From a wikia:

The cure can be used on both the player character and Austin if, during the conversation with the doctor, the player tells him to use the cure on Austin then quickly backs away and uses the cure on themself before it is removed from the player's inventory. Note that you have to use the cure after Dr. Forsythe begins responding, otherwise you will trigger the dialog for having used it yourself. Using jet before talking to him helps you with this considerably.

I managed to do this successfully, although it took a few tries to get the timing right. I saved right before going into the clinic so that I had easy reload spot.

It's -10 hp. If I hadn't read about it online, I wouldn't have even realized that I had it. I didn't notice it until probably like 30 hours of game play later. Not a big deal. You're SUPPOSED to contract the disease there. Otherwise you're not faced with a moral decision to make at the end. That's the point of the quest.

I've heard of people making it through there without contracting it, but I'm honestly not sure how much I believe that. I've gone through without getting bitten and still gotten it. I didn't bring a companion and one-shotted the Protectron with my explosive shotgun before a molerat even had a chance to bite it. I still contracted it. I think it's just a scripted part of the quest.

Just for the challenge of the thing, I tried running the mole rat gauntlet without catching the disease.

I did sustain 4 HP of damage, but it has been a week and so far I am free of any mole rattish effects.

I took a mean laser rifle in and made smoky rat chunks out of 'em, but if I try it again I think I'd like to see the effects of

Spoiler
Lorenzo's Artifact, as it repels things with extreme prejudice.

I'm not sure if this works after the latest patch. I couldn't do it without him noticing and yelling at me (still got a 'Cure Loved That' though which was nice) Could just be me though.

But it's not like it really makes any difference if you let the kid die anyway, especially if you never plan on returning.

I had it for ages without even knowing, -10 Max HP isn't really that important and if I hadn't read about it I probably would have never even realised I caught it during the mission.

I got though the quest without getting bitten (or letting a rat get near me for that matter) and I didn't get the disease so you must have gotten hit or perhaps killing the protection caused it (I left the robot alone)

I'm also on the ps4 so perhaps it could be a bug and the disease is suppose to be scripted like you suggested.

I caved today when I did the quest. I put the settings on very easy, grabbed a pistol, used orange mentats for perception boost and used VATS to kill all the rats in one or two shots. A few well-placed grenades also did the trick. I avoided catching the disease that way...

The weird part was that the game assumes you will catch it so the dialogue at end was the same. I could have even kept the cure for myself, even though I didn't get the disease. Thinking back I should have done that. Doesn't get more evil than this!

Read my previous post. Just did it without contracting it... by cheating a little.

I don't know. I tried like three times in a row without a companion, and I'm totally certain that I didn't get bitten. I still contracted it every time. It could have just been a bug or something.

The dialogue assumes you have it, but you only ACTUALLY have it if it shows up in your effects tab.

I can confirm that Lorenzo's serum does nothing for the molerat disease. That irked me so much that I cured it with the console after I took the serum and it did nothing.

This is what I did. Bloody irritating that not only is it highly infectious, but if a follower, even a synth follower gets hit, the player gets infected. It's also dumb that the game doesn't outright tell you that you contracted it. You have to assume you did and look in the negative effects tab.

You can even catch the Disease using Godmode in the Console. I just Save between Molerat encounters in the Vault anymore.

Hadn't even realized my character caught it until long after the quest was concluded and Austin was saved. When I did, I shrugged and went, 'Eh, no biggie.'

Same here.

Still, could have done a better job at informing the player that contracting the disease was a possibility or even tell you that you've contracted it upon getting hit.

That's my biggest issue with it. I don't really care about the -10 hp. That's not a big deal. I didn't even do that quest until I was at around level 50, so it was basically negligible. My problem is that I didn't even KNOW that I had it. That quest is designed to force a moral decision onto you, which I love. I wish there was more of that in the game...but the way the quest is structured, I didn't even realize that I was making a moral decision of that magnitude. Yes, I saw the options to keep it or split it or whatever, but I figured that the 'keep it' option was more due to greediness and wanting to sell it or something like that, not to use it to cure myself. In my second play through I obviously knew about it ahead of time and tried to avoid contracting it. For some inexplicable reason I couldn't prevent myself from getting it, so I don't know. I still gave it to Austin though. I ended up console commanding myself a second copy of it though just out of frustration over being unable to avoid it lol
