It's like Edgar Vautrine says, "You want to buy or sell, the City is great. You want free? Go down the holes, kill some monsters. Sell your loot back in the city!" :)

make potions and sell them. also if your join the mages guild you can steal pretty much everything that isnt nailed down and sell it for quite a bit of money.

Find Crayfish Cave and plunder it repeatedly. It may be quite a trek and have some difficult monsters in it (depend on level) but it has a lot of chests, a fair amount of which are boss chests.
It's brilliant for finding random enchanted loot, you're pretty much guaranteed to find at least 2/3 magic items.
A common one for me was Fortify Fatigue Pants, practical yet stylish.

Money. Don't underestimate the "save" side of the equation. Most chars need to buy some spells and maybe a few hammers, but all other purchases can wait till you're rich. Safe storage, free beds, arrows, lockpicks, soul gems are all easy to find (if you spend some time with UESP). Repair your own gear (use unenchanted till you have the armorer skill to repair enchanted). If you use enchanted weapons, recharge them yourself. Join the Mage Guild and make your own spells (selling guildhouse loot can fund this).
Now, for the making money part of the equation, courtesy of Geckoman:
**sigh**
1.) alchemy - make potions and sell them
2.) arena
3.) ayleid collector quest - get ayleid statue from vilverin and take it to Umbacano to start.
4.) loot loot loot - rockmilk cave
5.) order of the virtuous blood - 250 for each vamp dust
6.) player.additem f 100000
7.) dupe something expensive and sell

lol, you should warn people those last 2 are cheats :P but i am thinking of doing them. once you've played it enough you sorta just want to go out, kick ass, and buy whatever cool thing you want. now that im on my like 5th character i think i might cheat a little to speed up the process to the kicking ass and buying cool stuff part :D

Me too I use to take and sell all chemical apparatus in the Mage Guilds. You will often see my char checking all the crates in the City and sell whatever was inside, even items at 1 gold. A real beggar:-). But besides, as my first plan is to enter at the Arcane Univ. asap, I gain some free spells or scrolls in doing all Mage's Guild quests. Vilverin is my favourite place to get armours and weapons easily.
