monster ideas #2

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:16 pm

this is a monster's only based idea forum...their is only one main idea thread but i would prefer their to be a couple so people can look for the ideas they would like to read about more easily.

so post some monster ideas it dose not matter what province just think of some TES or mythological related monsters you would love to see in the game...if you want to make up your own monster put down a good description of it so every one can get and idea of what it looks like.

rock elemental: this monster first attacks by falling from top of a cave wall and trying to smash you, or coming up from the ground under you in the forum of stalagmites. it is 10ft tall and made completely out of rocks and boulders, related to the storm atronach it can swirl around as a deadly swarm of blunt rocks, most only are made of common rocks but some found have been made of rare ore such as gold or even made of rare jewels, know to live in mines and will attempt to kill any miner who stumbles onto its territory.

I'm serious; bring them back or, ideally, introduce something similar in effect. Cliff racers represented a major element of fear in exploration for my characters in Morrowind; something that was starkly missing in Oblivion. Perhaps they were a bit overdone (like clumping three or four together in regions such as Molag Amur and Ashlands), but exercising a bit more restraint would solve this. The element of fear and challenge made me play the game more smartly, made me take wandering into harsher-looking regions more seriously, and overall reinforced some believability into the game that there was something out there that made the wild regions "wild" and something for the average citizen and even the fledgling adventurer to avoid.

Besides, when the player finally attained a level of skill at which cliff racers were no longer a threat, it could be seen as a major victory by the player over the land, and a major achievement to be proud of. It reinforces the idea of the player growing and becoming more adept at handling and surviving the set dangers of the world.

I agree that something similar to cliffracers...yes everybody hated them, but a game without challenging foes is not much of a game at all...what was bad was when they were no longer deadly, just hard to kill and swarming in packs...I think any kind of flying creature should have lower health and therefore be easier to kill in one or two blows at a higher level, and if there is a swarm of them, the others should flee when you kill one or two

I'd love to see hackwings (from the Argonian Account) if we get a game in or near Black Marsh. I imagine them as larger, more solitary cliffracers that could kill lower level players easily. Could maybe be avoided by fleeing under low hanging branches, thick plant cover etc.

Other than that, WEREWOLVES. Originally left out of Morrowind, totally left out of Oblivion, c'mon Bethesda, get on the boat here.

Deadly, scary, and the ability to become one yourself with increased stats and attributes. Slight immunity to normal weapons (and/or health regen) and weakness to silver (maybe wounds inflicted by silver only heal after you feed?) As far as other lycanthropes goes, theres a lot of weird ones but I think werebears would be a good addition, stronger but slower than werewolves.

I'd really like to see a return of the were-wolves and the undead creatures from Morrowind. The undead listing seemed really bland to me in Oblivion.

I'd love to see the bone-walkers and bone-lords and the like, and all of the summonable daedra. I'd also like to see a coming of lore creatures native to the region of the next ES installment.

Frozen zombies: zombies that have become frozen. Sure, their not dangerous now, but if either you or a npc throws a fire ball their way....

Did I mention pyromancers spawn near them?

The very fact that a game should be challenging is why enemies like cliffracers are not needed. Challenging is when you encounter an enemy, and you are killed, so you have to rethink your strategy, or come back at a higher level, cliffracers are not challenging, they're just annoying.

Now I have to agree that the game needs to have werewolves, or some other type of were-creature that is appropriate to wherever it takes place, preferably more than one if suitable, and you need to be able to become one, this could be like Bloodmoon where there are quests associated, or it could just be something that can happen.

Other than that, though, I found Oblivion's selection of creatures to be rather bland, goblins and minotaurs are fine, but they get boring if they're all you fight, I'd like to see a return to Morrowind's strangeness, that doesn't mean we need nix-hounds and ash ghouls, those were good, but might not fit in every location, I'd like to see some more exotic creatures where appropriate, maybe some sort of Lovecraftian horror, or even some less overused mythological creatures would be fine, the Greeks and the Norse weren't the only people to create mythology.

Problem with cliffracers was not that they was very dangerous but that pure melee characters had to wait a long time for them to come down so they could fight them, with a decent ranged attack they was easy to kill. Ring with fire damage on target was an easy way.

The strict level scaling in Oblivion made hard monsters rare, mountain lions was hard then you first run into them, some other monsters was hard on first contact. I always fear Spider daedra, even more if they are grouped with other daedra because of the paralyze effect. But I feel a lack of enemies to be scared of; you should have more monsters who was real hard SI had multiple, mended flesh elementals, the walking tree, also have to be careful around groups of knights of order. Quite possible to have monster groups, this would have to be npc, daedra, goblins or similar because they would have different team members helping each other, mage, ranged unit and melee.
Different characters have different hard enemies. A large and hard hitting but slow moving orge can be hard for melee characters but easy for archers if they have range, archer will have more problems with a small and fast enemy even if it's easy to kill. Mages will have problems with enemies with magic resistance or refection.
Everybody have problems with a hard and fast enemy like werewolves in Morrowind or deathclaws in fallout. If the enemy is stealthy and like to ambush or sneak up from behind you have a dangerous monster you will fear. You will have to look out for it all the time, might give it a scream it sometimes uses, but only then far away and then it jump on somebody, the point is to cause fear.
And let it scramble detect life, perhaps use illusion, create illusion of itself or short term 2-5 seconds invisibility.

I can say this, the monsters will have to depend on the province/ part of the province we're in. I read that "Emperor's Guide to the Empire" or whatever it's true title is that came with oblivion so I can say that there are some interesting types of monsters. In Hammerfell there are giant scorpions and evil fire and wind spirits. However, what the developers really need to focus on is the presentation of these monsters. If we saw just a Rad-Scorpion from Fallout 3, then the fight would be boring. We need developed intimidating monsters; a giant scorpion should be black so it could sneak up on you if you travel at night, it should be covered in scraqes and scratches along it's shell, and its claws should look like they could cut you in half if you don't play for your cards right. And fire spirits could look like people lit on fire, screaming in agony as they swipe at you and throw their fiery aura in your direction (they also should be floating and look the bodies being non-descriptive to give away that they're spirits, not people). These are just examples showing that this is how presentation can make or break creatures.

Here's what I'd like to see: Centaurs, Dragonlings (both rare), Fire Daemon, Gargoyle, Ghouls, Giant scorpions, The whole Goblin clan, Golems, Grahls, Bring the bonewalkers back, Homunculus, Iron Atronach, Lamia, Lizard men, Medusa, Mad Men, Mummies, Nymphs, Ogres and Ogrims, Nocturnal's Seducers, The whole skeleton clan, The were clan, winged twilights, and the zombie clan. Those are just some Ideas...

Except for kwama foragers, it seems like snake and worm-type creatures have been missing. It's a simple design so lots of variations are possible.

A disturbing critter I've seen elsewhere was a flying tarantula. Big menacing spider with bug wings, spits poison.

One thing I liked about Morrowind was that the waters and skies were also occupied. Danger was literally everywhere.

No, cliffracers are challenging, at least until you're well leveled. "Challenge" doesn't require a single well equipped, well leveled enemy. Challenge can also appear as a gang of not-so tough opponents... or a ravenous swarm of easy opponents.

I was a big fan of cliffracers in Morrowind. Nothing woke you up like assuming everything was OK, then hearing that "Brrrrrr!!" and the WAP of its tail hitting the back of your armor.

As always, it depends on what province the game takes place in. For the sake of this post, I'll just go with the Skyrim assumption:

For mundane animals, probably just wolves and bears

Werewolves and werebears

assorted sundry undead

Trolls, and maybe ogres

various daedra (I'm inclined to suggest a focus on Hircine's daedra, rather than the usual focus on Dagon's)

Underfrykes, and whatever else popped up in Bloodmoon.

Those sky whale-thingies that appeared in those Skyrim stories on TIL

I'd like to see Dragonets. Which are basically Dragons about the size of horses, and while not as deadly as regular Dragons, they can be lethal. Also Werewolves, Uderfykeytes(however you spell it.) And some more undead. Also the ability to turn into a Werewolf.

I'd like to see an actual mermaid appear as a creature. We've seen statues of them in Anvil and New Sheoth, but it'd be cool to have some exist in the actual game. And they can be used as either non-hostile creatures (like deer) or dangerous creatures that attack in water like the Dreugh.

more zombie types, I'm tired of all of them looking the same without clothing or weapons

maybe have a variety of them like how goblins are, mages, warriors, rangers, warlords, etc.

also, I don't think that adding dragons would really follow lore, but what about undead dragons and wyverns

heres a list of more:
- all elements in atronachs (not just fire, shock, and ice, add water and earth adn all that)
- giant spiders
- demonic creatures (something that looks fierce, something so awesomely vicious that the victory against it is all the more sweet)

Skyrim Creatures-Dangerous

Pack Wolves.(yes a whole pack of wolves. wolves tend to remain in packs when hunting. not just wandering around)

Bears.(brown/black/polar would work.)

Wolverines.

Snow Leopards

Non-Dangerous:

Deer

Snow Hare

Arctic Fox

Owl

Lemming(yes a lemming)

Mythological:

Snow Spirits

Goblins

Underfyktes

Minotaurs

Yeti's

Werewolves

Werebears

Daedra would have to focus on hircines creatures. maybe sheogorath's and malacath. possibly peryite(haven't seen anything of his yet.)

feel free to add anything to this list

Guineasauras Rex.

But if lemming are there make them run off a cliff for a easter egg(though they dont do that in nature, it would still be funny)

No dragons please. The lore has been ingorned enough already. Wyrms? Maybe. Full dragons? No.

I would like to see vampire clans emerge, by that which I mean the various vampire creatures with different abilities. I'd also like to see another wide range of strange animals. Morrowind definately offered a wide spectrum of creatures to combat. I'd like to see more variations again.
