Morag Tong Or The Dark Brotherhood

Post » Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:55 am

Personally I found the Dark Brotherhood trying to hard to be evil. There was a lot of potential for roleplaying moments, but everybody were just walking around talking about how evil they were. Granted, some of the quests were rather interesting, but there was too much "evil for evil's sake" for me to make it plausible.

The Morag Tong on the other hand gave off the impression of being a vital part of dunmer society. In fact, with Morrowing being in the state it is in, "solutions" to diplomatic... complications would ideally be in the form of assassinations instead of open conflict. Fewer resources and lives lost. I enjoyed the tong quests far more, though being rather repetitive as they were, than the DB missions.

I think back to the Atevi assassins guild from Cherry's "Foreigner" novels. I see certain parallels and doesn't find that as something negative.

Dark Brotherhood was more like a organization of psychopaths, where as Morag Tong was more assassinish.

Nobody said they aren't crazy, but they are good at what they do, and the DB questline is interesting.

They (and the PC, who is given no choice but to be deceived too) are so good at what they do that... can't say it, spoilers.

Well considering the Morag Tong was only sanctioned to operate in Morrowind, and now since Morrowind isn't in the best of shape, its safe to say that the Dunmer have more things to worry about then killing rival house members, and heck the Morag Tong probably doesn't even exist anymore. If anything in TESV the DB should return to the Daggerfall style, not the emo wanabe goth cry baby assassins of Oblivion.

Spoiler to anyone who has not read The infernal city

Since the book said that morrowind had some sort of Tusnami does that mean
the morag tong no longer exists?

The Dunmer were not wiped out, though the remnant are now refugees in what remains of their homeland and elsewhere. An underground organization like the Morag Tong is far better equipped to survive such a catastrophe than the other Dunmer institutions would be, though it could also be fairly said that they are so hated outside their homeland that every man's hand will be against them.

Morag Tong.

I know a lot of people really enjoyed the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion, but I could barely stand it. "HURR DURR...did you hear my joke about killing a group of kids? Did you hear it!? See how EVIL and MORBID and COOL we are?!?"

I think most people only really enjoyed the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion because its quests are widely considered some of the most fun in the game, not because of how 'we're evil just because we're the evil guys' Bethesda made them.

Isn't it really just an interpretation that they are evil? I mean they are more apathetic then evil, they show a lot of affection towards each other.

I know. I know. In so many ways, Oblivion ruined the Dark Brotherhood. As misguided as it may be, I like to believe that the Cheydinhal branch of the Dark Brotherhood was just a bunch of fools.

@ Cecliff2 and @ .Escapist : Hey thanks for the info. I've played the TES games many, many times over, but I still don't seem to know all the lore behind things, only a little bit. I still need to go through and read all the books in the games. that'll help I'm sure.

I just bought the infernal city and haven't read it yet, planning to shortly. So there was a tsunami in Morrowind? I would expect the Morag Tong to have survived too, and have some influence throughout Tamriel, after all, they need to track targets I would assume. Their influence perhaps is not so prevelant as in Dunmer Morrowind. Dunno. I hope I can somehow find a remote faction of them in TES V that I can join. Otherwise I'll stick with playing my Morrowind mods that increase the Morag Tong . and patiently await TES V release :toughninja:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Morrowind dark brotherhoods armor inspired by Gothic tribe military garb?

Considering their primary base of operations was located in vivec, i dont think theyd be better off...
if skyrim has their own assasin guild then i hope thats the guild we play through. i dont really care though, but i agree with complaints on how the dark brotherhood was trying too hard to be bad a$$. The missions were great though.
