Morale

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 10:59 am

I've heard quite a few people asking for a "Survival Mode" or a "hardcoe Mode" that requires the player to eat and sleep to stay alive. I just though of a good way to encourage players to do these things: have a morale system!

If the only sleep you ever get is that one hour on a dungeon cot at each level up, and all you ever eat is Replenish Magicka potions, your morale should be pretty dang low. But if you take the time to stop at the inn, eat a nice slab of venison, and sleep a full eight hours in a nice warm bed your morale would get a huge boost! You'd then get a small bonus to various attributes, depending on your skills, that lasted for twelve whole hours!

Do you guys have any other ideas for things that would boost morale?

What about things that would reduce morale? Like needing a Skooma fix real bad.

No. I know what makes my character happy, not the game.

Yes, but it should only influence Luck.
Things that should make you happy: Sunshine, winning a battle, delicious food, improved disposition towards someone, completing quests...
Things that should make you unhappy: Getting wounded, darkness, hunger, sleep deprivation, cold weather...

Cold weather makes me happy. Some people like the dark, too, and despise sunshine. Getting wounded can provide an adrenaline rush to make you fight better, and some people are masochists (they like pain).

Nope. I don't want the game telling me what does and doesn't make my character happy. I'll decide that myself, thank you very much. It's not unheard of for me to play two different characters who would be close to precise opposites with regard to what would raise or lower their morale.

Maybe my character is currently fasting for a religious purpose. I'm being serious. I've made pretty religious characters in past Elder Scrolls games. My Daggerfall character joined the militaristic and religious faction of the Order of the Hour. My Morrowind character joined the Imperial Cult. My Oblivion character resurrected the Knights of the Nine and became a part of the Nine Divines factions as well as a devout pilgrim. All of them also did some side business involving Daedra. Therefore, my character likes to starve. :P

Adding another game mechanic to a series that is getting rid of/amalgamating skills that many gamers thought were useless is pretty counterproductive, wouldn't you say?

No. Not a stupid idea or anything, but not right for this game.

How does the game decide if my characters happy or not, when it doesn’t know who my character is or what they like?

Plus it would just be redundant. This feature is already there. If Im happy, they’re happy. We share the same goals already, I don’t need them whining about it.

I'm imagining my enemies taunting me in battle, and all my attributes dropping on account of their hurtful, hurtful words.
