Morals..In or Out

Post » Mon Jun 20, 2011 6:41 pm

I was wondering if you guys thought a morale system other than the fame and infamy system should be implemented. I am on the fence on this one and I can't decide. After all of the information that was released at E3 about the plot. Morals could play a huge part when saving Skyrim. You could save it then just watch it burn if that makes sense. Basically would you guys want people to treat you differently on how you play the game. NOT LIKE FABLE.. I don't want stupid horns or a halo or anything like that just attitudes or available quests. Do you think we should be able to make choices when completing a quest like Mass Effect That would affect the way people think of us? Would it be cool if the way we played the game attracted certain guilds. Like you had to have this much fame to be in this guild or this much infamy to be in that guild? What you guys think?

Also what exactly does the fame infamy system do I didn't notice anything

I'd like to keep the fame/infamy system like in Oblivion, but actually have it do something this time. :P

I would rather just have the reputation system of Morrowind

I dont want quest givers to hate me because of my morality

I agree with this. I thought reputation was handled decently well in Fallout New Vegas which though Beth didn't actually make the game, they could take whatever they wanted from it.

Well I would like Fame/Infamy, but more in-depth and stuff

I liked that in KotN a person with Infamy couldn't wear the armor set, as that made sense. More stuff like that would be cool, consequences and rewards are always good.

probably just make characters like/dislike you by small increments that can be negated by talking and befriending them...or have kids cheer for you if you're a gallant warrior or fear you if you're some wicked mage...little things, not major things

"Fame" and "Infamy" is a lot better than saying "good" and "bad" which both have negative connotations.

I would like to see a similar system to Oblivion....but the rate gets changed, so you have to do slightly more good deeds to get a +1.

Maybe give each faction and city a fame/infamy meter too. you could have high fame in one city for the mages guild, and in another city have high infamy for whatever their opposite would be (if there is one)

I actually kinda hope they bring over the morality system from Fallout 3, it would be cool if you could actually be an evil character in Skyrim

I think calling it fame and infamy fits the game better. I want each city and guild to build it's own view of who I am depending upon what they know I've done. I don't want the game to personally tell me I'm a bad person, I want a faction or group of characters in the game to tell me I'm a bad person, because then it becomes more subjective and I can disagree, but if I have EVIL stamped on my Character Menu, I can't really argue with that assumption.

I like this. I feel if they could implement this, maybe the whole "I got caught pickpocketing one person in one city, but got apprehended by a random guard and fined for it after I had gotten on my horse and galloped to another city across the world" syndrome could be dealt with through this system. Perhaps guards would be less likely to believe you had actually committed such a petty crime if you had a good standing in that city.

Faction system like New Vegas would be cool. I can generally work out whether I'm being evil without an evil-meter. Having allies and enemies is a lot more interesting.

Exactly. What gains you "infamy" for one group will gain you "fame" for another group.

Reputation with groups, fame/infamy with the general populace
And no gaining infamy for deeds done in secret. A good thief/assassain will be totally unknown to the general populace

Maybe a Thieves Guild Fame/Infamy meter, having a high Thieves Guild fame would mean you are a better thief in their organization. Having a high infamy would mean you probably helped out the guards stop thieves occaisionally, so they would probably not let you in their group

Agreed, that always bugged me about Dark Brotherhood quests. If I did my job right, nobody even knew I was there!

If you've gotten bounties for murders or robberies and pickpocketing, there should be an infamy or negative karma counter that causes more people to distrust you/fear you. If you've gone out of your way to help people, the game should recognize this and add to your fame and people who recognize you or are acquainted with you should be amiable toward you. But I agree that a good thief or assassin shouldn't garner any negative karma or infamy for acts no one saw or reported to the guard, but your guild would know the amount of missions you've completed or how many assassinations or fenced items you've garnered and recognize that.

Morals should be implied, not expressed as a stat. TES isn't the kind of game (or gameworld) to support such a system. Fame and infamy make sense, but they're not linked to morality (think of the "hero" surpressing a revolt or the "villain" stealing from the rich and giving to the poor). You can be a "good" thief or an "evil" knight, which is kinda the point of TES - Do what you want to do, there's no stats telling you you're good or bad at something.

God no. The karma system is so flawed.

You don't need a stat to tell you that you are evil. If you want to be evil, do evil things. Simple.

100% agree. For the love of god, not everything has to be expressed in a stat!
