More Advanced Technology?

Post » Wed Sep 08, 2010 8:50 pm

It was revealed in the discription of the book The Infernal City last year on the website Waterstones that the next game will take place 250 years after the Oblivion Crisis. I personaly thought that it would make sence for the new game to include some at least slightly improved technology.

The choices of tech are discribed by weapons. I used marksman weapons to show this because I think they best discribe the level of technology.

Feel free to explain your discision.

crossbows and prehaps some more forms of medieval weapons. But no firearms, that would take this from being a medieval RPG into one of the renassaince era.

exactly, i like the medival sorta setting with the swords and the magic and what not, firearms would ruin that, they have fallout for firearms most i'd want is repeating crossbows but those would have to be rare and very expensive.

First off, the rumor said 200 years, not 250. Second, it was just that, a rumor, and has not been confirmed by Bethesda, as they have yet to announce the next game. And frankly, considering the Infernal City only takes place 45 or so years after Oblivion, I think them setting it 200 years after is hard to believe, considering the second book will more than likely take place around the same time as the first. Sorry to sound rude but it's just that I see someone mention that rumor at least once a week here.

As for advanced technology, no, I don't want to see any. 250 years in TES is not the same as 250 years in our world. Technology doesn't develop as fast because nobody is around to develop it. It isn't a world that is focused on technological development like ours is. They have other priorities. Any advanced technology, even a slight advancement, would require an explanation of which race created it, why, and how it spread so quickly throughout Tamriel that the player could use or interact with it. I do, however, support crossbows returning, as they were Dwemer made and don't need to be explained, as they were in Morrowind already.

I can imagine advancements in technology, but not necessarily following Earth's technological development. They've always got advanced projectiles that can kill people, and they never run out of ammo (permanently), they don't really need guns.

If they advanced in making things like windmills, new alchemical tools, carriages ( 'cause apparently they have none  ), then I'd be fine with it.

In real life we depend on Technological Advances for staying one step ahead of our military rivals, for beneficial reasons, and for our own entertainment.

On Nirn they have magically enchanted weapons for military affairs, alchemy and restoration for beneficial purposes, and theaters/festivals/skooma/parties/performers/magic/adventure to keep them entertained.

They're pretty-much set, they might even be the "fantasy equivalent" of what we are at with technology now, when you equate in their magic.

same, i'd love ot see more dwemer tech, but stuff that does not actually help the player. Either just making you go wow, like the orrey in oblivion, or some cool enemies.

Crossbows, but that's it. The time period that Fable 2 takes place in is one of the main reasons why I don't like it.

Just crossbows. Technology advancement -as in our world- is left to those that are completely incompetent with magic. And TES are medieval themed after all so any new technology should imo fall under the medieval category.

Crossbows should be back and they should be more common than in MW. NO firearms - we are definitely not there yet.

Repeating crossbows would be good if they were rare - and I mean VERY rare. Something like a prototype - a wink at the players, something which will tell us that technology is improving, but at a slow pace.

I wouldn't like to see guns in Elder Scrolls, crossbows however I would. I think the use of magic would affect technological advancement. When you can use magic to achieve your goals I think you'd be less likely to develop technology to do it.

I personaly agree with you, I doun't see why the empire did not import crossbows from Morrowind in the first place.

Bring back my crossbows, damnit! In regards to other technology, I don't think it would make much sense within the context of the lore. If you look at Redguard, set in the second era, everything pretty much looks the same as it does now notwithstanding some potentially retconned ship cannons. Magic flows like water on Nirn and there's very little reason for anyone on Tamriel to pursue technological innovations as an alternative. I wouldn't mind seeing some more powerful medieval technology though, like ballistae and catapults.

Yes, repeater crossbows at most.

The rightwinger who posts here getting denied his 'second amendments rights' is icing on the cake.

... :banghead: . Arg, why the pathetic and sophomoric jab!? Not cool, not cool. I may love guns, but I sure as hell do NOT want to see them in TES. Crossbows at the most, which were in MW. I suggest you edit that last part out, as it amounts to nothing but flame bait.

Crossbows, but I would not mind seeing some other indications of further technology.

Not repeating, but maybe a crossbow that has the capability to fire more than one bolt at once.

Heretic (the best escapist gothic horror fantasy thriller adventure medieval first person shooter of all time) had an enchanted crossbow that could fire off three bolts in a spread pattern. It'd be neat if you could place enchantments like that on marksman weapons to affect their firing rates and flight path.
