I know .... I'm slightly peeved as well. I tested this out on my hubby's pc as well. Same s... Different day lol. Yes I was totally jazzed to finally being
playing fallout nv... So where do you find the actually patch to download? Or is it automatically done through then Steam?

I hope they are putting a new patch to fix the patch.

It's automatic. Through steam.

If you have a lot of saves (over 50) try moving some out of the directory. I had around 80, was crashing a lot, I kept my autosave, quick save, and the last 5 saves in the directory. The rest I moved out. Since then, my crashing seems to (I've played a a few hours since then) subsided.

My Documents/My games/FalloutNV/saves
don't delete them, you can just cut and paste them somewhere else. Into a directory on your desktop or wherever you want, just out of there. if it doesn't help you, you can put them back if you want.

Before I removed them, I was crashing every hour or so, sometimes more. Since removing them, I haven't had any significant crashes.

I know before I got "a lot" of saves, I also wasn't crashing. Something happens over time to make this game crash, and the only thing I can think of is the build-up of saves.

I don't know why it would do that. But Obsidian did limit us to 1000 saves. So they must be aware of an issue caused by having a lot of saves.

If it seems to work for you let me know. I'd say if you can get through a couple hours okay you're probably set.

After having the game crash on me another 4 times I decided to delete all my saves and start over, and hey now the game oddly enough uses more than 35% of the my gpu's and the stuttering stopped. As I happily roamed around goodspring completing ques.... "FalloutNV.exe has stopped working"

I am so tired of the game crashing on me all the time, atleast it doesn't stutter anymore. When I first got it I was able to play for 45 hours without a single crash, but foolish as I were I wanted to start over on hardcoe and that is when all the crashing started. I have now started new characters and replayed the areas from goodspring to mojave outpost 6 times hoping to get rid of the constant crashing because once my game starts to crash it only gets worse with each passing second.

I am also still waiting for yet another reply from support, ever since they got my msinfo I haven't heard a word from them, and that is 13 days ago.

I'm also getting more crashes now than I was when I first installed the game, but the crashes started before the latest patch.

Usually the crash is a sudden CTD without an error message or any warning signs. One second I'm playing the game (and as often as not in a dialogue or container inventory menu) and in the blink of the eye I'm staring at my desktop with my computer pretending it was never running anything to begin with.

Now and again it will be the stutter/warning sign freeze followed by a CTD with the "would you like to send the error report" box.

And then there is the dreaded freeze the system can't close it have to reset the computer crash.

On my last crash (which prompted me to check this forum) I actually got the following error message:

The instruction at "0x00e85d2d" referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read".

Dunno what it means.

I am one of the victims of the latest patch. Game was working fine and now I can't play more than a few minutes without it crashing. Hopefully they can get this fixed soon.

I have been getting tons of crashing .When I started the game they where rare .Now I get them all the time .I think it has to do with sound . My sound is messed up after every crash .I have tried new video and sound drivers no change .tried lower vid settings . Mostly the crashes seem to be during transition.Never durning a save .Completing certain quests always cause a crash .The one with ranger at fort golf If I select to turn him in and any time I attempt to talk to rex and examine him.I wish I could try on my other Pc with nvidia gtx 260 but I think the sound card is also an asus using the pci express bus in that one i think .Kinda stinks cause I have had to do so many quests the oposite of what I wanted but had to or couldnt continue . The random ones I can live with but like 10% of quests completion cause crash too .

I am using

phenom 955
8 gigs ram
asus sonar DS sound card
windows 7 64 bit premium .
xfx radeon 5830

Well that is some confirmation that save games are having some effect on the game. I'm still crash free, about 8-10 hours after trimming down my saves.

anyone having trouble, try removing most of your saves and report back how it affects your game

Yours could be a result of another issue. Not saying every crash is related to the saves, but it seems to help some people.

I played another hour or so this afternoon without any crashes.

what a f.....ing mess this is again! they bring out a patch that does help some but also does the contrary to others...like me. I played the game hours and hours (even if only possible in windowed mode and without AF and only 2xAA turned on but that was a compromise I already accepted even if I did pay the FULL PRICE not 70 percent....) but now after the patch....crashes like the ones described above: all of a sudden I am switched back to my desktop as if the game would never have run. great work, folks! you really know what you are doing! but hey....it will only take about 2 weeks or so to fix this....
so what do I do?? reinstall everything and then turn steam to offline all the time waiting for a patch that will fix every damn issue that will come out around june 2011 or so????....but for sure the savegames I made after the "patch" (its a shame to call it that) wont work with the old version....

Hi guys

Sorry to say but i have the crash problem before the patch and after the patch.
Seems that some have the crashes only after the patch.
Not sure it is a patch problem but more a bug in the software itself. Too many persons have the problem.

I will try the save games story but i am not very confident.

Will post later with results.

Interestingly, after removing all game, save, and mod files and re-downloading via Steam, every time I choose "Verify Integrity of Game Cache," there is always 1 file that fails and gets reacquired, even if I run it two times back to back. If there is some way to tell what file it is, I will gladly look it up and post here.TS

I get that mystery missing file too, and would also love to know what it is. Could it be something to do with the pre-order DLC? (I didn't pre-order, so don't have it) The game flashes a DLC message every time it's launched.

I'm wondering if the crashes are something to do with corrupted save data - or some instance of wayward scripting (possibly AI related) which gets saved. At one point, every time I went down the road between the NCR camp and Novac I'd get a total system lockup when I reached a certain point on the road. The game just froze and I couldn't even ctrl+alt+delete out of it. After the third try I went back to an earlier save and then I could go down the road without a hitch.

We have a very similar system and I get all the same crashes as you do.
I think it really has something to do with the combo: AMD CPU + ATI GPU + ASUS Xonar Soundcards + Win7 64bit.

My system:

AMD Phenom II X4 965
4 GB RAM DDR3
ATI HD5770
ASUS Xonar D1
Windows 7 64-bit Professional

EDIT:

Here is a picture of my last crash message:

I doubt it has anything to do with your specs, Simon. Freezes & CTDs have been reported by users with very different specs. For me it all points to a memory leak.

My very first game ran fine withour any problems until I hit the samegame corruption bug (in Vault 3). My toon was lvl 26 at that time and had about 48 hrs gametime on the clock. After that I've reloaded an earlier savegame and the idea was to avoid Vault 3. Indeed, no problems with savegames but from that very moment on I have freeses & CTDs every 30 - 40 min. Even started a new game but still get these freezes/CTDs. Curiously, if I save, exit the game and then restart, load the savegame the period until the next freeze/CTD still sums upt to the same amount. The only way to extend the period to its maximum (which seems to be about 40 min) is to restart the PC.

Crossmr: I had the same suspicion for some time. But after removing all but 4 savegames and still encounter freezes/CTDs I think we can exclude this as a cause. Most of the freezes/CTDs are accompanied by error windows of different types. Most common is a "blank" message: click ok to exit application. Others are related to various (single one, different each time) applications running in the background: Avira.exe has been destoyed, TeaTimer has encountered an error, WinPatrol has detected .... etc., even some Windows system drivers have been overwritten. The list is long. Common to all these error mesages is the exception error code 0x00...005 which tells me that there is a memory leak.

Mind you, I have not changed anything (no system/drivers updates, no mods etc.). The latest patch(es) did solve the Vault 3 savegame corruption but not the freeze/CTD issue.

Cheers Euclid

I try to remove savegames and still have crashes.

But stop. It is not a save game problem, neither gpu problem or hardware problem.
That is a problem in the software. Too many persons have same problems to not point the software itself.

Hope a patch will fix that.

Saves are a software issue. So far I'm still going strong but I've only been able to play 1-2 hours at a time during the week. ON the weekend I'll try 4 hours or so straight and see if it holds up.

This is the first time i've tried to play since the patch.

In the 1 hour i've been playing, i've crashed about 9 times doing various things (trying to fast travel, just standing around, giving ammo to a companion) and experienced a new bug that i've never seen before patching (unable to pick locks or hack terminals).

So they've replaced stuttering with just flat out crashing instead. Nice.

my first longer playtime with patch 1.2.0.285 yesterday was strange:

the good: performance with win7 and nvidia gtx480 is a huge difference, runs perfect now without the dll and as good as my second vegas installation on the second hd with win xp.
performance = great job bethesda, tanks!

the bad: in the first 60h playtime with 1.1. i only had two crash to desktop, yesterday with 1.2 i've had one freeze in gomorrha casino and two freezes during loading screen after leaving a room there.
a third freeze like this during entering camp mccarran and even worse, i've found a spot there (where morales widow and food dealer are) i can't go no, tryed several times and always crash to desktop.
with 1.1 i was there already without problems.

I use nmc texturepack, bog body replacer and darnui, perhaps the new patch hast problems with this?
never had with 1.1 and so the "more and more crashes" is true for me too with this patch, great job with performance but stability ist bad now.
i guess i have to play again with win xp and the new vegas 1.1 there. :(

same here.
- crashes since installing
- try fixing with that d3d9 dll
- checked drivers audio, grafix, and so on
- .ini workaround
- clean install /re- install (steam and dvd)

nothing helped me not even those patches. before the last patching (first run) all fine, 3 crashes made by me (alt+tab my fault, so its ok i guess^^ )
after patches suddenly... its like there is an counter ticking in background: 40/45/50 minutes then my pc goes like "yeah try do something, won't work on, help your self" and all thats left is another reboot. no warnings, no ctd (in most cases) sometime something about progress "unable to read in memory * "

directx tests said: you're fine, rock on dude
system runs other games without any problems allthought its not the newest
nvidia 9800gt 1gb ram
amd 6000+ @ 3ghz
2gb ram
- no OC inside -
(*german windows, so i don't know your systemerror - text)
