More and more crashes

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:56 pm

I'm crashing constantly, ever since installing the most recent patch. I have a save where I'm out in the desert, but planning to head back to New Vegas. I fast traveled to Gun Runners, and every time I purchase a fairly long list of items, I crash. After that happened about 3 times, I decided to try purchasing just one or two items at a time - worked fine, no crashing. However, the next time I tried to save my game, I crashed. So, grumbling under my breath, I once again loaded up the save from before I visited the Gun Runners; this time, when trying to purchase the first single item from them, my game froze up and I had to Ctrl + Alt + Del to get out.

Prior to these recent issues, I'd only ever had a handful of crashes (some of which were when exiting the game anyway), and I never once had the game lock up and require a Ctrl + Alt + Del.

You can add me to this, I played the first week or so with no problems then suffered a bug crashing the game after dealing with house.
I managed to finish that character even with crashing, now every time I play over 2 hours on any character it crashes.
I really don't think it's my system everything works fine elsewhere and drivers are up to date.

My console version suffers from these same issues, so I don't think it's just machine performance... On all my characters (4 so far) the game gets increasingly glitchy and crashable after the 40 hour mark... I nearly gave up during my first character, when the game froze on 7 occasions during the final sequence... Otherwise, the game seems to operate reasonably well, early on... Perhaps a cache issue? I recall there being discussion of emptying a cache when the game first released, to avoid glitching... Either way, the game is not without early faults either... My most recent character had to be started over 4 times before he levelled up without the XP actually just ticking past the level markers uslessly (I made it to the equivalent of level 3 XP without noticing that I hadn't levelled up the first time... Watching for it the next three times, I watched the XP pass the 200 point over and over without a level up noise and screen...)

The patch has done nothing for me. Still crashes all the time - I'm lucky if I can get 1hr in before it hard locks my system, and that's playing it a the lowest res with everything switched off/low.

Whilst I did get a response from I think one of the official guys around here ( Gryphon) who was very helpful, suggesting all wonderful ways to make my system 'New Vegas' friendly, - lowering the voltage on my RAM through the BIOS (!) was my personal favourite - nothing works.

I've barely clocked up 6 hrs game time because of all the constant CTDs.

After this debacle, there is no way on earth I'm buying another 'Bethesda-approved' product. And Obsidian deserve to go bust.

We have a very similar system and I get all the same crashes as you do.
I think it really has something to do with the combo: AMD CPU + ATI GPU + ASUS Xonar Soundcards + Win7 64bit.

My system:

AMD Phenom II X4 965
4 GB RAM DDR3
ATI HD5770
ASUS Xonar D1
Windows 7 64-bit Professional

EDIT:

Here is a picture of my last crash message:

I don't have the system you do Simon but I get the EXACT same message frequently and the Runtime C++ error CTD.

SO... I decided to check up on the memory usage and leaks that you mentioned in an earlier post.

I set the Virtual Memory page file to minimum of 5,000mb and max 10,000mb
I turned off the Program Mgr. for the Logitech G15 keyboard (for some reason FNV likes to reset my Program Mgr. settings after a crash), unplugged the modem (so no internet), turned off AA, and stopped all screen effects.
I got to play for 49 minutes before 1st CTD (that is an improvement of approximately 12 minutes), only this time, NO message as to why it happened; it just went to desktop without any warning.
The second time I started the game after that it ran for roughly 15 minutes before CTD with no warning or message. However, right before the crash I was in the process of saving the game and all I saw on the save game slots was "0000 CORRUPT". I tried to save the game in a new save game slot (which would be number 8) and the same CTD happened with no error message.

Note: When I was disconnected from the Internet the game fired up the first time I double clicked the desktop icon. I didn't have to go into Task Mgr. and shutdown Steam then double click the icon again (which is what I normally have to do to get the game to launch).

Shutdown and reboot the system and repeat all the prep work before playing the game and it ran for about an hour before the CTD mentioned above. I thought I had struck gold before it crashed again.

What did I learn?
Fewer CTDs when Steam isn't online. Increasing the Virtual Memory helps some but not enough.
I don't get error messages when when game crashes now.
The game still seems to crash randomly for no reason.

Don't know if this will help anyone but I thought I would offer something constructive this time. I don't know what else to do except wait for a patch to be released.

Hi,

The game crashes every 20 or 30 mn. (freeze or reboot)

I have the latest patch installed with steam.

I know my Pc is an old configuration

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Memory 2 Go
Graphic Card : ATI 1800XT with 256Mo of memory
System : windows XP SP3

But it's the only game that crashes every time. For example Fallout 3 run very well !

I tried to run the game with a lowest level of detail and it didn't changed anything.

I loosed my time and my money with this game :-(

I hope the developpers fix this kind of game issues

*************************************************************

I 've tried the D3D9.dll for ATI. It's seems to fix the problem. I was able to play without a crash !

The game run faster.

I just heard back from another player who I recommended remove most of her saves. She says she's done so and hasn't crashed yet. It might not be a solution for everyone, but try moving most of your saves out of your directory and give it a shot. Only keep the last 3-5 saves + quick + auto. Costs you nothing but a few minutes to do, and who knows, you might get lucky.

I'm also getting more crashes now than I was when I first installed the game, but the crashes started before the latest patch.

Usually the crash is a sudden CTD without an error message or any warning signs. One second I'm playing the game (and as often as not in a dialogue or container inventory menu) and in the blink of the eye I'm staring at my desktop with my computer pretending it was never running anything to begin with.

Now and again it will be the stutter/warning sign freeze followed by a CTD with the "would you like to send the error report" box.

And then there is the dreaded freeze the system can't close it have to reset the computer crash.

On my last crash (which prompted me to check this forum) I actually got the following error message:

The instruction at "0x00e85d2d" referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be "read".

Dunno what it means.

It is a memory error...
Run memtest and check your ram.

The amount of saves you have in your save directory doesn't matter. I got a crash within 80 mins of play and had just 2 saves. As I stated on page 2 of this thread.

I'm not trying to start a row or anything, but some info on whether this is at least getting looked at as a software problem or flaged as hardware would be nice.
The amount of views it's recieved could show a large section are experiencing this problem.
I'm not looking to blame anyone but if we had some idea it would save time and stress mucking around where it's not needed.

You know, I used to have a lot of crashing issues, eventually leading to a locked-up computer. Turns out my anti-virus Avira v.10 had a -huge- memory leak. Downgrading to v.9 worked, and never had anymore problems.

Probably doesn't help most of you, but worth looking into if you have a memory leak.

I'm crashing within 3-5 seconds of killing any monster near the lake where you raise the plane from under the lake.

Reinstalling game completely didn't fix...

i'm 65 hours into the game on my 2nd save game.. My 1st game corrupted 20ish hours in.

Is this another [censored] corrupt game at 65 hours?

I think it has to do with how the game remembers your state in the game world. It seems that the more you change the world, say tip some bottles over or leave containers half looted, it eventually leads to instability. I wonder if there is a way to clear some kind of memory or at least somehow clean up loose data in the savefile. There must be a dev that can answer this.

I just wanted to chime in that the patch [censored] me over too, I can barely play now. Much more frequent crashes, my companions are going bonkers and disappearing and other weird stuff, my laser RCW sometimes stops shooting lasers. The worst is that my frame rate is horrible now :S.

I'm trying to do the "verify integrity of game cache" thing, but I'm getting the one file that couldn't be validated every time, ugh.

I reinstalled, still no dice. No mods or anything, except the .dll fix. But I tried without that as well, no good.

I'm addicted to your game bethesda! Fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it!! :)

Crossmr: I had the same suspicion for some time. But after removing all but 4 savegames and still encounter freezes/CTDs I think we can exclude this as a cause. Most of the freezes/CTDs are accompanied by error windows of different types.

Missed this first time around.

It worked for me, without changing anything else.
It's apparently worked for another user so far as I've heard from her.

It is possible people are getting crashes for different reasons.

How does one check to see if their v.10 Avira has a memory leak?

Would disabling Avira during playing NV help at all?

Just glad it worked for you, I was wracking my brain trying to figure it out, but did some investigating as to what was leaking, and found out. Hope it helps more people.

Outside of using Poolmon, this would probably be an easier method to monitor your paged memory:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=113433

Just follow the instructions, and if it gradually keeps going up... you've got a leak. Avira v.10 is causing a leak for a goodly number of people from looking at their forums.

If you do decide to downgrade to v.9, this website will give you a nice and easy link to get the right version:

Well, it was a shot in the dark but it didn't work for me.

In fact, I had it uninstalled completely and I was disconnected from the Internet. The game ran for 30 minutes before CTD with "FalloutNV has encountered an error and needs to close..." message came up

*sigh*

Think I'll just put it up on the shelf until a patch comes out.

I'm not even confident that this 'substantial' patch that is supposedly is in the works will do the trick either. If they can't deal with these severe problems on their first attempt, I doubt they'll address them later. They'll concentrate on what is 'fixable' in their minds - remedying side quest oddities and the like, in an attempt to pacify the community. Their core engine is broken and they don't have the capacity or the will to fix it.

I bet Bethesda/Obsidian have an 'acceptable casualty rate' figure in mind when it comes to PC users of New Vegas. They're probably quite content that this game is proving ruinous to a certain % of people's hardware, so long as they get their '5 million sales'.

Well atleast the console version still crash aswell, and I somewhat doubt that bethesda will stop trying to figure out why untill it atleast runs properly for them, and in the process I hope the pc version gets fixed aswell. None the less, once bethesda and oblivion stop patching the game the modding community will hopefully end up fixing the broken parts.

You know, after all these years I have more faith in the community when it comes to making things work.

Apparently, it seemed to work for me. I did two things after steam patched my game and I verified the files: downgraded Avira and turned off my Realtek sound card control panel (pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and terminating process RTHDCPL.exe), everything worked just fine for last 5h, before this, I had a crash party every 5 minutes. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you for this tip! I had the game crashing every 15-30 minutes, tried everything from different drivers to uninstalling ffdshow but nothing worked. When I read your post I changed from Avira to AVG and I haven't had a crash since.
