More animations for roleplaying?

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:02 am

Imagine you taking apart a 9mm pistol and then repairing it. Or imagine you skinning off hide of a gecko, or cooking different food on a fire, or opening up a creature to take its meat.

All of these animations will take time of course, but from RPing's perspective, they are priceless. These animations should have the option to be skipped so they dont make the game too slow paced for the normal players.

Whats your say on this? I think they will make the game very immersive.

i like the idea very much.. but from a realistic view i doubt this will happen. without mods of course.

It would be cool the first 2 times, after that it would just be an annoyance.

Hmm, reminds me of Red Dead Redemption, when I killed an animal I would go get its coat, but everytime it had to show the animation, which annoyed me after a while. Sometimes thought it never did it, and I still wonder how it happens.

In fact i think they should take it a step further and introduce mini games where you skin animals, repair weapons, etc. You skill can be affected by relevant skills, just like lockpicking.

Oh no, not minigames.... :( Animations will be just fine. But not for everything, many things can be rather annoying with animations, especially things that you do often and/or if the animation is rather long or uninteresting. I mean, taking the different drugs, consuming food and drinks, smoking, those things could have animations.

If the animal in question was too close to certain parts of the environment, i.e. rocks, or your horse, the animation will be skipped so you don't clip.

It'd be cool if it weren't for the crap animations gamebryo has.

Think it would slow the game down too much. But I'd be happy enough if they were in.

Is it Gamebryo or just the animations themselves? Wouldn't they look identical in another engine? (If they were better animations, wouldn't they appear so in Gamebryo?)

IMO an abundance of nugatory animations would damage re-playability, because you would get tired of it. Personally I would rather some threshold for minor tasks, beneath which the action is just assumed.

Hmm New Vegas (or was it FO3) was going to have animations for using chems/stims. However, it was going to be banned in Austraila so Obsidian just removed the animation and renamed "morphine" to "Med-X"

^ That would be Fallout 3.... Damn Aussies....

Personally, I'm amazed that after all these posts nobody has complained that he would go play Sims if he wanted trivial extra animations and general living in Fallout.
Me? Why not.

Hmm, I always thought it had to do something with the horse, as I would jump off and instantly skin it.

Anyways I would like small non-important animations, that could be stopped by just moving the character.

Instead of new animations I'd settle for a more overall realistic experience by using new models/textures.

Take gecko skinning as an example. Firstly you can't skin a gecko without a knife, so you have to carry one with you or you can't skin it. Then after skinning the gecko body you will be left with a skinned gecko ground model (new texture). If you then proceed further and decide to cut all the gecko meat off the body for eating you're left with a different ground model for the leftover gecko carcass.

If that could be done I'd actually prefer that kind of thing to new animations.
