Found an awesome set of clothes, black vest with slacks. Was super stoked thinking I would be able to wear it with my Pocketed Shadow Leather Armor... and then I was AGAIN butthurt that I couldn't. No holsters and now this? GRRRRR

Yeah I was really surprised by this. The only set of clothes I've come across that I could pair with armor was vault 111 suit and minuteman suit. Now I've got a set of clothing with natural armor. It seems like the system for what can and can't receive armor is random. Can someone explain this?

I got a sweet trenchcoat, fedora, and sunglasses that my character likes to rock, but I can't attach armor to it. I guess I get the perception bonus, but my character is dying over and over from having no armor, not because he wasn't aware enough to smell the super mutant from a mile away.

Stuff that makes all armor pieces flash can't be used with armor. Stuff that doesn't cause anything to flash can be used with armor. Most clothing can't be used with armor. According to the official guide, you can use the following items with armor:

- Army Fatugues
- Baseball Uniform
BOS Officer Uniform
BOS Uniform
Brotherhood of Steel Uniform (guide has a separate entry for this. Not sure if a separate item, or a typo)
Corset
- Dirty Army Fatigues
Flannel Shirt and Jeans
- Green Shirt and Combat Boots
Gunner Flanel Shirt and Jeans
Gunner Harness
Gunner Leathers
Harness
Long Johns
- Military Fatigues
- Minuteman Outfit
Raider Leathers
Synth Uniform
- Tattered Rags
Undershirt and Jeans
- Any Vault Jumpsuit

Anything with a - can also be modded to provide extra protection beyond it's base stats. Of these, I'm inclined to say that the vault jumpsuits are the best, as they can provide decent Radiation resistance. Most armors will provide solid Ballistic and Energy resistance, but Radiation Resist is harder to come by from what I've seen, so the 25 point boost you can get from a fully upgrades Vault Jumpsuit is pretty nice. Of course, this is entirely from a gameplay perspective; no aesthetic or RP considerations are being made.
