37 more days! How did you hear about Brink?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:58 am

Saw it in a magazine first; the incredible art style caught my eye. So I read it and it sounded awesome. I then looked for the website and saw some gameplay videos and fell in love with it. I have been following Brink since the beginning.

The art style definitely was and is a big hook for me. The sky blues and whites of the Ark + the street / armored aesthetics of the Resistance and Security are very distinct.

But whatever happened to the Brink's original poster child? The lanky guy doing a wall hop with spiky black hair and long shorts? Remember him? He's gone....

Depends. Do you mean how I heard about it for the first time or when I first got interested in it, lol?

I actually heard about Brink for the FIRST time because my sister and some of her friends mentioned a shooter
that had ugly dudes and only dudes and joked about how the setting is "Dude Island", lol. And then I started to hear about that kind of thing (no females, ugly dudes only, lol) about Brink in online gaming sites and gaming blogs (girl gaming blogs especially as well), etc, lol. :D

I didn't get interested into Brink until I saw a screenshot and short blurb in a gaming site (or was it Game Informer), so I was curious and decided to check it out.
The fact that Bethesda (loved the Elder Scrolls games III and IV) had a forum for Brink and Rage also made me curious to see the differences between the two FPS's (I was starting
to get interested in FPS's at the time, so I was looking for a GOOD one that had a different setting like Borderlands did).

Then, I got into a controversial thread about lack of female characters, which I then checked the SD forums and found out in another female character thread that female characters are going to be a top priority in the future....and then I saw the H0rse Bible and Container City gameplay with Jolly.....and the rest was history, hee!

And that is the story of how the girl :bunny: got into a male-infested world of Brink, lol!

There was an ad for it in the box for Fallout: New Vegas. I looked it up, and really want to get it now. I'm a svcker for games with a lot of customization.

Yup. And I can understand their views, though. We girls are outsiders to the masculine world of FPS'es, especially since it contains lots of sixism.
We usually get told to "shut up", "you stink at playing!", "[W]-itch!" and "stop being sensitive" and stuff like that, from my own and my female friends', relatives' and classmates' experiences. So, yeah, it's hard to get into FPS or any games that have tons of males (especially online), lol.

That's why I'm always sensitive and get defensive about certain things sometimes, heh.

I understand their points as well. Not as a girl, but as guy that's not a [censored], lol. I just also wish that they could look past all that and see that Brink is still going to be an absolutely amazing game.

Yeah, but would you want to be part of a community that doesn't want you or respect you and dismiss your concerns as if they were nothing and that we girls are "just being sensitive/PMS-y"? (I mean, FPS'es "supposed" to be played online, with people, right?)

Luckily, I was lurking around here and found the community for the most part is nicer than other FPS communities. ^_^

Speaking as a man.... :whisper: Men are jerks. I apologize for the stupidity of my brethren.

I also share your love for customization. I played City of Heroes to bits back in the day because of all the options, and I've forbidden myself from playing The Sims 3 until I get my degree, because it's a trap.

This. The majority of what we do is rooted in natural instinct. It's the same instinct that says "The biggest rear-end-hole is the best person ever and he's going to get all the girls".

I was looking at gameplay videos and trailers for All Points Bulletin around two years ago and I ran into the first trailer made for Brink. I then looked at the customization video and was immediately hooked onto it. I did some research, but soon forgot about it entirely until August of 2010. I've been waiting eagerly ever since.

Okay I'll give you that. No forum is perfect.

I'm going to stick my neck out under the axe blade here and defend men a tiny bit.
I often hear about the 'War on Women' and I can't help but think it is a War on the sixes.
Its not as easy to see it, but men are heavily effected by trends, sometimes even more so than women.
What I would say, is that women are the most effected by it, therefore they are prone to more abuse due to circumstances.
So men are seen as all being the same way to many women.

As an asixual man, I can say that humans can be complete [censored]s.
But that isn't saying I'm not angry at how many men 'think' they need to treat someone of the opposite six.
Its pointless to even go there. He's human, she's human. We are all human.

I have yet to be convinced that the human species is sentient, anyone here know the theory of 'zombie species'? It has all the signs of being a sentient species but isn't.

Oh, I know men also catch flak from other men, hee.

I'm just saying my piece (from personal, frustrating experiences) about how us few females (and gay males) in the gaming world have to deal with extreme bigotry and hatred (and/or horny weirdos) for some weird reason.

I also know that reasonable and sensible men also get beaten up by these immature/idiot males, too, lol. However, females get soooooo much crud from
society if we step out of our "assigned" roles or don't act subdued and domesticated. I mean, we got more words to call females (and gay males) a bad name and sometimes it's seen as "okay" to use such words.

Not that males don't get beat up either (if they are not "masculine enough", etc) for the same thing, but more females get more....stigma, I guess? Gay males get a bit of a similar treatment, too (because they don't fit into the "hetero-male crowd").

It's a gaming culture thing, I guess? (I feel, though, that some games encourage certain behaviors in the community.)
And the U.S. (maybe world?) culture in general.
Especially since we live in a very male-oriented world and females are still not getting paid equally as men and we have to break glass ceilings (while most males
get the "glass escalators") in some careers.

As a society, we still have a ways to go-----but for especially regarding treatment of minorities, people with disabilities, females, and those of various religions, beliefs, sixual orientation, etc. ^_^

Well put. I agree completely. :)

According to my countdown clock, it's 37 more days until May 17th. The days are slowly but surely ticking by, and we all know what happens after.

However, how long have you been waiting? What's your story behind becoming a Brink fan?

Mine was when I was crusing around the Monday Night Combat forums somewhere last December - I went to the Off topic section and this one thread caught my eye - "Has anyone heard of BRINK?". I click it, look around, and someone describes it as "Team Fortress 2, Borderlands, and Mirror's Edge all getting together and BRINK is it's beautiful lovechild". Curious, I googled it, looked at reviews, read the Compendium, joined the forum, and here I am.

OT: To add to how I found out about this game, I think I might have a read an article on a game review site about Brink in its early stages.
Eager to find the next best FPS, I watched as many videos as I could, and ended up joining the forums due to my boredom with previous titles.

And also: http://countdown.onlineclock.net/ and counting.

I like to think humanity has held very tightly to the six instinct that has been with us since we were nothing more than a primate.

When animals mate, it's to make babies, but to also evolve the species. Naturally, a member of said species will want to make sure the next generation gets the best genes so that generation becomes better, and the next generation even better. This has been around since multi-celled organisms first existed.

Back when humanity was nothing more than a rabble of cavemen, the "best" genes belonged to buff men who would pass on the strength, and women with large briasts, to feed the next generation better. Think about it for a second - this could be why we find these things "sixy". In that vein of the natural instinct to make the best generation, I'd imagine mothers who did not give birth (women who stepped out of the gender roles) did nothing to help the next generation, and I'd imagine they were shunned due to bad genes or whatever.

Fast forward several millions of billions of billions of years, here we are now. Technology has taken away all that - we don't need buff children to survive the next tiger attack, we need smart children to survive the next technological wave. But instinct is still with us. That urge to progress humanity genetically, while obsolete now, is still there, we're still living in it's iron grip, and no one seems to notice it!

I'm saying all this sixism against women could very well be hard-coded into our systems, from when we trully needed to progress humanity's genes - but now we don't.

The distinction we have yet to make as a species is when its not needed. Leads to all kinds of problems.
Tradition is at its core, broken.

Genetics or not, humans should be able to now realize why we do what we do.
Too bad many people would rather not find out. Ignorance is a tricky thing to deal with.
That is why this means so much more than what people are either willing to accept or believe.

And sixism being hard-coded into our brains is a lot more about control than anything.
In todays society, its on an uber-powerful trippleshot-heroin induced steroid level however.
There are so many contributing factors to todays society, it is now an uncontrolled monster waiting to explode.

I had heard a little about it over the course of the past year or so, but I didn't bother researching it and didn't really acknowledge it's existence. At some point within the last couple months I ran into a review of it, and though it looked awesome. So later that night I remembered it and looked it up on Steam. After about 5 minutes of contemplating it, I pre ordered it and have been keeping track of it ever since.
