More Descriptive Soul Gems

Post » Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:37 pm

One of the many changes between MW and OB was a more simplistic description for captive souls inside soul gems. In MW, captive souls were not simply listed as greater, lesser, etc. The type of creature- such as a daedroth or winged twilight- would appear as well. It added more depth to the game to know that I just used a dremora to enchant my cuirass, rather than a grand soul. Also, if it were a unique creature, such as Vivec, that would be listed instead of the generic creature it was.

Without exception, my favorite hobby in Morrowind was collecting unique souls. I made my best effort to collect the soul of every named creature there was, and I had every one of them that I was aware of. It was a really fun way to look at all the creatures I had killed, whom I now had collected on a shelf in my home. It disappointed me to find out I would not be able to be a "soul hunter" in OB.

Would you like to see the return of "named" soul gems in Skyrim? I know I would. :)

The only complaint I had was that soul size isn't apparent. Without looking it up, or just making note of how many times you get "You do not have a soul gem large enough to capture the soul" and wasting the enchantment charge or mp how do you know what size soul a Flame Atronach has? Um, I guess when you get Azuras star or find a wheelbarrow worth of GSGs it is irrelevant.

I'm with you. I had all the Dagoth's souls in gems proudly displayed around my house. While this feature applies only to the collectors in us, it would be neat, especially if you include black soul gems (did MW have black gems with names on them?)

Theres no reason that both name and soul type cant be displayed. Not one or the other, both.

I'm not here to argue for or against because I don't really care but just wanted to point out if IRC that we could not capture non-creature souls in Morrowind and in Oblivion you could with black soul gems which did keep the npc's name. Correct me if I'm wrong I may me misremembering a mod as vanilla behavior.

As far as more descriptions, maybe they can finally tell us where the heck those things come from, too. They tend to show up near alchemy setups, but that seems to be more a matter of not having many "mage items" to decorate a corner with. Do they make them? Mine them like regular gems? I want to know.

I can see how that would be a hassle. However, IIRC, if you had the correlating soul gem for the soul you were capturing, the game would place it appropriately. As an example: If you captured an ancestor ghost and had a greater soul gem and a grand soul gem, the game would place it in the greater soul gem. That may take more planning than some would like, but it added to the immersion and skill in capturing the souls efficiently.

Yes! I forgot about capturing the Dagoths! They were an essential part of any soul hunters collection. ;)

I don't believe MW had black soul gems. That was a new twist for necromancers in OB, IIRC.

I must have a will of steel because I know about the item stacking duplication glitch but I manage to avoid using it. Though there are times I am tempted...

I support this, also I'd like to see a difference between regular soul gems and black soul gems this time around.

I can never resist it, hopefully Skrim won't have a glitch like it.

I remember on Oblivion using Black soul gems to capture important NPCs and then enchanting items with their name on it. Like the King of Worms for example.

I'm completely for this. I used to always carry around soulgems in Morrowind for the off change I'd run into something I wanted to collect. I didn't care about enchanting or soulgems at all in Oblivion, the fact that I could no longer collect and didn't know what I was enchanting my weapon with made it completely lose its appeal to me.

And why can't they be reused?

I'd like soulgems to be more mystical and rare though, I'm tired of soultrapping bears to use like batteries.
