No more Fable Legends, No more Lionhead

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2016 2:53 am

Hey friends, my brother informed me of some rather shocking news today. http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/7/11172408/fable-legends-canceled-lionhead-studios-closing Lionhead has been responsible for Fable - Fable III as well as the Movies. Despite varying opinions of them and their games, I'm sure we can all agree this is big news.

As for me, I guess since this is a hard blow and I want to talk about it with a community I figured others would as well. We may all express our opinions, but let's please be civil. The first Fable was a crucial part of my childhood, and while I may not like all of the choices in the series from then to now, this decision really saddens me.

What are your thoughts?

I'm not really sure what to think: I thought Lionhead had already gone, but I guess it was always going to happen sooner or later since MS acquired them. Having worked in the IT industry for many years myself, I guess I've just become used to it: "we have this really cool stuff...! But we don't know what to do with it or how to sell it, so er, cost savings, workforce management, shareholder value, we'll sack everyone and kill it. Oh damn it it's broken. But at least it was ours. Intellectual Property™ y'all."

Sigh. I guess I've become too cynical from so many years of the same to even be sad any more.

Wow, Fable was a huge part of my childhood. I'm not so much shocked as I am sad about what we all probably felt was coming.

Really disappointing since I love the Fable games. But ah well, I'm not really surprised.

Fable died a long time ago for me, so I'm indifferent to this.

Also, Fable legends looked horrible.

Yeah, that game. While it was ok it was the beginning of the end. There was no real challenge, only like one "boss", and the ending disapointed me so freaking much.

Lost Chapters on the other hand added the cut content of the first game. It had the makings of a great mythology, had bosses and would challenge you over and over.

I was a teen when the original Fable was released and enjoyed it very much. I never played the others but heard bad things about them, especially the third one. But the first one will always be a classic.

Hmm, never heard of this game. I thought Lionhead collapsed ages ago when they failed to release the Playstation version of Black and White.

Shame about Lionhead. Can't say the same about Fable Legends honestly.

I enjoyed Fable 3, I didn't really get the hate. I didn't love it, but it was good fun for a time. Fable 2 will always have a place close by, it was the first game I played when I got my Xbox on Christmas day almost 9 years ago :)

I was never really into any of their games, but it's almost always sad to hear about a studio being shuttered. Wasn't a big fan of Fable...I always meant to get back to a Fable 2 play-through I'd started, but more interesting games came along and I just never did. Same with Black & White. Sounds like they'd been limping along for a while, so maybe this is not too surprising.

Honestly, I'm fine with this... I played the first Fable and it was fun for a bit... Then I quickly lost interest in it. Fable, honestly, wasn't a very developed game. The idea was nice but the execution wasn't for me...

~Edit~

Black & White was a really nice game too and I enjoyed the heck out of it... But it has the same issue that the original Sims did. Playing it normally gets boring rather quickly and most of the fun with it gets more into screwing around and tormenting everybody.

Fable was my [censored]!!! I remember every aspect of that game with fondness and it had the best arena in any game I played. Fable 2....not going to lie i had a huge prejudice towards fable 2I for adding guns to the fantasy setting but after playing the game ...

.i enjoyed it very much...though I still didnt like the guns but it was a good game none the less.

Fanle 3 deserved what it got for me the only saving grace was the coop it made the game bearable but after my friend downloaded a stupid hat thingy I couldnt play with him untill I got the same hat thingy. That just absolutly killed it for me and we still couldnt play with each other even after he deleted the hat! Goodbye lion's head may you rot in the coldest part of hell for what you done!

Honestly, I would've loved Fable 2 if it was an actual open-world game like Bethesda's stuff.

Fable 2's fantasy setting was really unique and amazing... Just wasn't "exploited" to it's best ability.

Fable Legends looked horrible.

I think the problem was they thought they had a good product when they didn't.

The morality system in the game series was very...shall we say 'off-kilt'. No matter what you did, you were either evil to the core, or a pure saint of Albion.

Yeah Fable2 was my favorite of the 3 I played. Fable was "just ok" enough to get me to try Fable2 and I wasn't sorry I did. I was so excited for Fable3 and when it was released I just didn't dig it. Maybe my tastes changed or something, I don't know.

^That's more or less my experience with the series, though I started with 2 and went back to TLC (and got the Anniversary remake). Fable 3 streamlined everything to hell and was much more restrictive than the already simplified 2, which kind of hampered my enjoyment of it. (Locking things like skill ranks/spells, property ownership, thievery, etc, behind story progression was pretty crap)

Overall my favorite of the series was 2, even if the game moves way too fast after a certain point. The worst thing to come from this is that we'll never get a dolled-up PC port for 2, or a port at all. :/ At the very least Fable: The Journey kind-of sort-of gave the series closure?

On the other hand, the Fable series got me into TES so upside?

Fable TLC is the only Fable game I have played.. due to the fun experience I had with it, I remember looking forward to playing Fable 2 but then it never came to the PC. I have seen it mentioned occasionally where TLC was hyped a lot due to the content that was going into it, then many of the things talked about ended up not being in the final game.. one of these things was a competition thing between heroes, and the failed full implementation of this may explain why I view Thunder as a poorly written character. I do not remember much else about what was supposed to be in the final game, but it makes me wonder how much more fun I would have had with it had everything been there.

Regarding Lionhead Studios shutting down.. well, I have never played any other game by them but it is still a little sad to see them go.

It would be nice to see Fable 2 come to PC.. when I realized it was only for consoles, I remember being irritated, then I eventually shrugged it off and just played TLC. If it never comes to PC, I will just have to accept that.

TLC was hoe the rest of the series should have played. Reading about The Court gave so much substance to the game. Would have been neat if a new Court came from the Void in one of the games and you had to follow in William Black's footsteps.
