More flexibility with what we can scrap?

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 3:12 pm

Ive noticed that many small settlements (coastal cottage being a main one) have alot of space taken up by demolished houses. The culprits being coastal cottage, country crossing, tenpines bluff and a few more. Now i enjoy the scrapping ability in the game, but i was wondering if Bethesda will update scrapping in the future to give the player more control over what they can scrap. Like it'd be nice to be able to scrap the foundations of the collapsed houses in sanctuary or the ability to scrap the massive trailer and the demolished house its fell onto in coastal cottage. This would not only tidy up the smaller settlements but it would allow more things to be built in place of these newly scrapped demolished houses. I know some people dont have a problem with space at these smaller settlements, but thats cause they build upwards, like a three story small building. I like to build across and make one story buildings, but i can never find enough space. I dont want the ability to scrap everything, such as the ability to scrap the whole house of Abernathy farm, but just the ability to scrap the unusable/worthless stuff like the remains of demolished houses/sanctuary leftover foundations. I'm also wondering on what other peoples thoughts are on this?

(I know mods exist that do similar stuff, but i dont really use mods so it'd be nice to be able to get the ability to scrap more things officially)

The mods that let you scrap those kind of things (like vines, leaves, bushes, buildings, etc) generally have the Cell Reset bug which causes problems. There are (allegedly) work-arounds but I'm with you ---- I'd rather wait for an official means of scrapping ~anything~ we want to scrap. I don't even care if I get components, I just want that stuff ~gone~.

Spring Cleaning no longer has the cell reset bug in the most recent version. It's a fantastic mod that I cannot recommend highly enough. I've used it to clean up the street in Sanctuary and get rid of a couple of the preexisting houses. I got rid of the mostly collapsed eyesore house on Spectacle Island, as well as some of the various rickety shacks, and also cleaned up a ton of the vegetation there. At Starlight Drive-In I used it to scrap the numerous skeletons (I was really happy about that one) and some of the other various non-scrappable things. I haven't used it at Coastal Cottage, but I'm assuming that I'd be able to scrap that useless house there too.

While being able to scrap more things (and actually clean up settlements) would be great, I wish there was a way fix up pre-exist/demolished buildings to be better shelters. As someone who actually studied survival tactics, the idea of using the houses in sanctuary and/or walls/cielings riddled with all those holes REALLY irks me; those are hardly going to shelter anything from the elements. Sure, there's the rug glitch, but I'd prefer an actual mechanic.

There actually is another mod out there that lets you repair the Sanctuary houses in the same way that you'd repair a broken generator or turret. You just walk up to it in build mode and the 'repair' option comes up. It puts them almost, but not quite, back to their pre-war state. This mod seems to be a bit buggy though. I haven't been able to get it to work. My guess is that it's a conflict with another mod, but I haven't spent much time trying to get it to work yet.

edit - Just installed version 1.2 of the Repairable Sanctuary mod and it's working great now.

And here's a link to Spring Cleaning, just for the hell of it.

Cheers for the links. The Repairable Sanctuary looks a little too clean for me. The Spring Cleaning one looks nice though. It still would be nice to scrap demolished houses officially via Bethesda though.

The problem with scrapping most things, such as with Spring Clean, is that if you make a mistake, you have a big job cleaning up the mess. I accidentally removed a wall from a building in Sanctuary, and spent ten minutes having to remove the gear hanging in open space, plus I had to actually put something there as it created a massive gap in my defences (more for aesthetic value, granted, but it did look pretty dodgy).

If a 'full clean' system is used, you need to have increased build limits to compensate I'd suggest.

They need to add in the ability to scrap scripted dead bodies. I like have them there when you first discover a location to help tell the story of what happened, but when you decide to start building, it's just morbid. Not to mention some of them can block you from building. The two dead brahmin at Taffington Boathouse can't be moved by the player either by grabbing or using explosives and they're right in the middle of the build area. Luckily I was able to finagle them out of the way using a junk gate, but a simple scrap option would be so much easier.

Scraping the dead ghoul bodies at Sunshine Hills. I hate it that they always reappear when I return after having lugged them out by hand.

There are two other mods that used in conjunction repair the roofs but leave them rusty.

That page has a link to the the other mod that patches holes on the description page. Take a look at the pictures as they show vanilla, his mod and with the patched holes mod. The buildings still look rusty but at least the roofs are not swiss cheese. I have not been in the homes during a rain storm yet but they look decent now.

I know what you mean. I just fixed all of the houses today, and it's going to take a little getting used to after spending hundreds of hours playing with the normal houses. I think I'll get used to it pretty quickly. I'm trying to build Sanctuary into more of an 'upscale apocalyptic neighborhood' of sorts. It's going to have plenty of defenses and such, but I don't want it to look like a super fortified fortress. I want it to look like a clean neighborhood with real trees and everything. Not everyone wants this, so a mod like this definitely isn't for everyone.

I discovered this pretty quickly with Spring Cleaning. When you're doing a big cleanup job...you've gotta exit build mode and save frequently. There have already been a couple times where I was trying to scrap some vines hanging on the side of a house and accidentally scrapped half the house, or accidentally scrapped an entire driveway when trying to scrap some grass sticking through it. The aiming is definitely a bit finicky with Spring Cleaning. You've gotta make sure that you have just the desired object highlighted. Press R and pause momentarily before pressing E so you can verify that it's what you want to scrap. Regardless of how careful you're being though, it svcks to spend 20 minutes cleaning stuff up and then have to start over again because you accidentally scrapped an entire house.

Pressing R helps when you pick something up and want to scrap it.
