More humor please!

Post » Tue Jan 05, 2010 10:27 pm

To the gang at Obsidian and Bethesda, I'd like to see more humor in the Fallout universe please! While the Wild Wasteland perk is fun, I'd like to see the game get cranked up a notch! Be able to craft weapons like exploding cigars (Speech and Explosives perk), chuckle grenades (they laugh as they detonate your enemy, especially when placed in their pants), and Colon-bombs (a laxative that can be placed in an enemy's food source or drink (Survival perk), with disasterous and funny consequences simultaneously). Brahmin bombs could be an alternate weapon of comic relief, where hucking these radioactive cow patties at bad guys sends them running in fear, while lowering their hit points at the same time.

Plus an assortment of practical jokes that you can play on your NPC followers. Make it so where you can dress them up in ridiculous outfits and people react accordingly. Send them on ridiculous side-quests for example, for such absurdities as the Eye Sporker, Sand Paper toilet paper, or the last remaining can of Rubber Chicken Soup. Abandon them for a week straight in a Death Claw camp by telling them to wait there, and return to see their expression!

Aside from more clever dialogue, this is what immediately comes to mind. Perhaps I have too much time on my hands, but at the end of the day, it's the comedy in things that I prefer. Thanks!

I don't know, some of those sound like something with a more childish approach. Fallout:New Vegas does have some humor, but alot of it is in dialogue, so I guess it's a bit esoteric. But seriously, 'laxative bombs?' >_>

Ouch! That's not something I'd like to see available as mods... let alone be in the game officially.

So you prefer the Dead Rising 2 style of sequal making?

None of that is Fallout related (or 'Fallouty' as some might say). The only game that might fit into is Fallout 3 or 4.

Well, there's a timeless comic relief element to crapping one's pants...no matter how 'childish' it may seem, there's always a time and place for it. Even Family Guy makes its bread and butter with off-color fart jokes and assorted bathroom humor. Besides, I thought the exploding cigars are equally childish, akin to the old Bugs Bunny cartoons......:D

Haven't played Dead Rising 2...but it sounds like it just might be right up my alley! I've always appreciated how the Japanese incorporate the whacky and absurd into their comedy forte....I spent 2 1/2 years living in Northern Japan, and absolutely 'dug' their humor on billboards, TV shows, and subway ads when I'd go to visit in Tokyo. Good stuff we're talking!

If you think Fallout is in the same ballpark as Family Guy, I don't think I could face palm any harder without hitting my hand on the roof.

But seriously, Fallout has always carried itself with a certian degree of seriousness. It's comedy has always been in it's dialogue, and in Fallout 3: and New Vegas (As well as F1 and 2 talking heads) cases, through the vocal delivery of that line.

Absolutely none of that sounds appealing. If you want a game that is just absolutely ridiculous then might I suggest Saints Row 2, excellent game and has the absurd humor you describe.

I prefer the humor through dialogue that Fallout provides. If any of the stuff you listed was in Fallout I'd let out an groan so loud everyone on this forum would hear it. For an entire year. So I have to go with no on this one.

Well perhaps it's a bit of a stretch, but I've never taken the Fallout universe too seriously to begin with, since it had radioactive mutants roaming the countryside, garden gnome hideouts, Pint-Size Slasher scenarios, and tongue-in-cheek Star Wars/Indiana Jones references. Besides, the whole game has that campy, 1950's B-movie feel to it - Robo-Brain robots and all! That's not to detract from how awesome of a game that it is, but at the end of the day, it's no different than any other form of entertainment that is out there....to be enjoyed simply at face value.

Fallout series has a fart joke... IIRC Harold says that it got so bad that you couldn't fart without hitting a mutant... but mostly in the North West.

(To which the Vault Dweller can say, "You farted NorthWest?")

If I remember correctly, in Fallout 3, even Three Dog the radio DJ makes a joke about the main character leaving the vault because someone had farted! :D

*LOL* Wow. Looks like I touched a nerve here with everyone! The way I see it, if there's going to be senseless carnage, six, drug use and profanity, some juvenile humor would be the least of the ESRB ratings that Obsidian and Bethesda would have to worry about! :D

I think you're missing the point of our general disapproval. An occasional fart joke is funny because it's unexpected when you first see it. But if it becomes akin to Family Guy, then at that point, any situation of seriousness is ruined. Before the 'blah blah blah robots, mutants' counterclaim, those are created by very serious in universe issues. But an overabundance of 'LOLOLOL SOMEONE DIDNT FLUSH -fart noise-' just gets overly ridiculous.

Just cause there is senseless carnage, six, drug use and profanity does not mean that the series don't have any self-respect.
You want "lulz" then play Borderlands, Saints Row and Postal, I've played all three and recommend them both for their "who gives a [censored]" humor and their gameplay.
But Fallout is not that and should not be changed into that either.
It'd be like asking for COD to change into Team Fortress. (Which I have not played but from the looks of it it has a lot of humor in it.)

[edit]
Didn't like the above part so let me try it a different approach.
Take two:
While Fallout has a lot of ridiculous things like robots with brains in them, a man with a tree growing out of his head, and big green ogres that scratch their ass and sniff their fingers afterwards the difference is that it's taking itself seriously.
Like, all of it is of course completely ridiculous, but the series has a dark undertone to it and works these ridiculous things so that they aren't "as" ridiculous as they appear to be at first glance.
Including the humor you stated on the other hand will cheapen the dark undertone and just make the series seem schizophrenic, one time it's dark with raiders stringing up humans in chains and cutting off their limbs while having six with their carcasses and the next it's Family Guy humor all over the place.
It stops being consistent.

Well you struck into a very delicate matter. Humor in Fallouts is one thing that anyone hasn't been able to do right since 1997. It was so dark and dry in the first one that you missed it in many occasions or you would just think that is it okay to laugh about it?

I've played the first Saint's Row and liked it alot. Haven't played Borderlands or Postal....although I only game on the PS3 since I don't wanna dump an endless fortune into a PC every few months for the newest upgrade (or at least it seems to be that way at times). I'll have to get my hands on a copy of Borderlands next chance I get.

Heh. Well apparently Strike 3, and I'm out! Tough crowd here!

I've only played Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, so I'm not 'as immersed' as some of the more seasoned gamers who are familiar with the series may be....besides, this is fantasy, not reality. If I were to make jokes about Chernobyl, Hiroshima, or the current Fukushima reactor situation in Japan, then by all means, throw the whole quarry at me (and rightfully so)....I would never do such things, simply out of respect for the victims.....it would be uncalled for.......but this is just a video game....let's keep that in perspective and separate fantasy from reality here. It's not like you're going to go outside and come across a ghoul or a super mutant, and have choice words with them.
