No more light bleeding!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:56 am

We can tell from http://www.pcgames.de/The-Elder-Scrolls-5-Skyrim-PC-128680/News/The-Elder-Scrolls-5-Skyrim-Drachen-Riesen-und-mehr-Neue-Screenshots-veroeffentlicht-811029/galerie/1486904/?fullsize screenshot that not just the shadows, but the lighting system really has improved. It always annoyed me in Oblivion and Fallout 3 that light "bled" through walls and such, especially when you would wander into a building in the same exterior world-space in Fallout 3 and the sun's light would "bleed" through the walls.

From that screenshot of Skyrim, you have the fire as the lightsource, and a wall perpendicular to it. On the other side of the wall, you can see that no light is bleeding through. The corner is dark with shadows.

Apparent lack of tesselation notwithstanding, I think the shadows and lighting look superb in every screenshot I've seen so far. Look at the shadow being cast by the stony outcropping. Look at the picture of the tavern or whatever it is (http://cdn.medialib.oxm.co.uk/screens/screenshot_17302.jpg) where you can clearly see shadows being cast by everything, including stools, the basket on the shelf in the background, and other objects.

I really don't think we have anything to worry about with regard to lighting. But I can understand people having higher standards than I do.

Well, it's no surprise. Once you allow shadows for architecture and other objects they will begin to self-shadow themselves. The "light bleed" was the inability for objects to shadow themselves, nothing more.

Soon to be a http://s659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/shademe/shadows/ as well, thanks to shadeMe. :)

With that, i think if certain sound modifications are brought in too, a mod may come out to bring buildings into the main worldspace sometime soon after the release without the "OMG my wine cellar is so sunny!" effect.

I like the shading and the light, but I don't like the textures in the picture. They were too... I don't know, but you know what I mean! The textures could use some more work.

Anyone else think those walls look really cool? I hadn't noticed those designs before.

They're okay to me, really. They do get a bit mushy when really up-close, but if you're on a PC and really worried about it, there will be texture packs. So, nothing to worry about.

Um... people may wish to look through the gallery that the image in the OP came from. There is what appears to be....
Spoiler
a dragon sitting atop a stone arch, showing an amazing view of the mountains in the distance, shrouded in fog. It APPEARS to be in-game...

Yes, that is in-game. And you can also see the dynamic dusted snow on the arches and on parts of the uniquely shaped things jutting out them. It looks really nice.

From what I've seen the lighting is great. But to be honest, I won't really notice while I'm playing; I'll just carry a torch or use a light spell like always.

I know what you're saying and I couldn't agree more. That is probably what aggravated me most about Oblivion. If I am under a bridge, and it is raining outside, I should not be able to see rain underneath the bridge!

As far as the picture is concerned. It looks great. The lighting has definitely been improved. 9 months is to long!

Lighting has improved from Oblivion, obviously...
But I think it still can be improved further.

I think the devs need to tweak it more. It doesn't look right. I asked my brother, who's an artist with great eyes for how things should look (especially lighting), and he said the same. Lighting doesn't look right.

WOW! I was looking for the link too. But now that I have seen it....... That is amazing. There have been dragons in games like Demons Souls and Lair, but to see them on a 1st person level is going to be amazing. :goodjob:

Console limitation maybe.
But even in PC that have more advanced techniques and more processing power to play with (GPU/CPU) noone is able to do it right, althought its getting near there s also the factor that:
TV screen / Monitor screen in which it was done ain t the same as the one it is displayed.

So its a complicated matter that usually require monitor tweaking which have a way to screw up other games/application colors.

And the fact those are screenie that really doesn t reflect the ingame effect.
