No more obvious pre-scripted ''random'' attacks

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:01 am

I really hope in skyrim the random attacks on the road when travelling are more well, random. Really on oblivion, i just traveled from the imperial city to bravil and all i saw at extremely regular intervals was

1.minotaur lord
2.bandit
3.troll
4.other annoying creatures

i hope the random attacks seem much more opportunistic then obviously pre scripted, I can't wait for this game but this is the only thing i want improved.

Not scripted, scripted attacks is only used in quests, what you saw was spawn point who has a high chance for being in, fallout 3 was probably worse with spawn points than Oblivion

From the sounds of what Bethesda is doing with the new AI the creatures of the worlds will have their own schedule, like wolves hunting and such.

Oh right but still, i feel the spawn points and attacks are to be overly obvious and really boring in oblivion

That and also Bethesda was talking about how everything wont "attack you". Like the screen shot in the GI magazine showing the player holding a mace and casting a spell in front of 2 wolves. In the pic, the wolves do not show any hesitation or aggressiveness, just looking on. So let me put it this way, each "enemy" has a personality, so maybe while you are walking to town, you see a troll or a wolf, they may just do a few things:

1)Just look on and go about their business

2) Maybe go for cover as they may be scared of you)

3) are just the aggressive type and may attack you or may defend itself

that would be kind of awesome, I thought that everything attacked you in oblivion was kind of stupid. The only thing that didn't attack you was a deer in the game

That is a really good skyrim point if it end up in the game.
Now if at least some creatures and NPC could have a morale for fleeing, surrendering or fighting to death...and surrendering would toggle a conversation.

@ Korean Kracker: Deers and rabbits.

Really this old: Its the player kill it approach is so old its was time someone would improve on it.

Yep, I'm excited for this too. The GI magazine also described a Giant passing the character by, as he cowered and tried to hde himself. The beast was uninterested, and pretended to not even notice him as it passed by. Then, on the other hand, a Frost Troll noticed him and attacked him straight away.

I think one way to kinda make the random attacks feel less "mechaincal" would be to mix in none monster random encounters, like how in Red Dead Redemption a random encounter could just as much be bandits trying to rob ya, as it could be some calm, friendly fellows around a fireplace.

Because to me the mechanical "script" feeling in Oblivion comes from the fact every random encounter was a monster spawn.

It was especially bad when wild animals would team up with daedra and bandits against you.

lol I have encountered that a few times where i have decided to run from say a bear then ran into a minotaur futher down the road then a bandit, then they would fight each other, then the winner would attack me.

It felt artificial because it was so mechanical, calculated and artifical.

I would like more pre-scripted encounters in the world, hand-crafted to add to the excitement.

but the random encounters in FO3 were definitly affective in that with each new character those events would happen some where else (in pre scripted locations) but they could work the spawning aspect into that. thats what I hope.

The joke is on you my friend. :)

I am glad they have dealt with the issue as it will improve gameplay on many levels. Wolves attacking you if they feel their catch is threatened sounds like a pretty good thing to me. Can't wait to see it in action.
