More ranged weapons.

Post » Sat May 08, 2010 3:50 pm

I like the idea of crossbows well enough, but I think I'll take anything I can get in terms of ranged variety over bows and spells. Throwing weapons, dart guns, crossbows, alchemical bombs.... really just anything to make being a ranged character more interesting. Heck, having a start-of-the-encounter throwing axe for a melee character would be pretty nifty.

Even if you like crossbows, would you be happy to see any amount of progression for variety in the ranged department, regardless of what it is?

Yes, i think the answer that 99% of us would give is absolutely YES we want more variety. The fact of the matter is that it doesnt matter what we want, its that the devs at BGS will only implement what works and what Skyrim needs to be a "visceral experience" My take is that we get what we get come time for release and i know that if all we have is bows and arrows ill still be happy and content that there is a new ES game to play and enjoy. :)

Well, I'm sure most of us will be used to just bows and magic if they don't do anything, but if they are serious about spicing up combat then more ranged weapons is a very very poignant topic to visit.

Lack of ranged weapons (that weren't spells) was one of my peeves about oblivion. I don't think it would be too much to ask for throwing knives or tomahawks instead of just bows. There's literally no variety at all too ranged weapons <_<

Yes, more ranged weapons would be nice, and I like the idea of the throwing axe.

I concur. As if speaking akin to M'aiq makes the point more relevant or true.

Actually, it might be a good indicator on what the developers are thinking. *shrugs* I could think of a dozen things I'd rather see them work on.

It fits so well with the setting too, I would love me some throwing axes. I'm indifferent to crossbows though, they would be nice but I think normal bows are good enough as a main ranged weapon. Not really a big fan of darts either but again more variety would be better anyway. , All I really want is a throwing knives and hatchets lol

Excuse me but I think he has a point... reloading a crossbow takes a lot of time.
I'm not against putting them in the game, but I'm completely fine with bows and arrows.

Really wow I missed that.

I don't think it's necessarily that they didn't want to do those things just that they couldn't accomplish them for that particular game and that was five years ago. I believe there was a maiq quote in morrowind about horses and dragons etc..

I could think of a dozen things I'd rather see them work on.

Sure thats your opinion but some of us want some variety beyond bows.
melee has axes, dagger/short swords/long swords/claymores, maces, hammers
magic has frost, fire, lightning, absorb, drain etc and multiple ways to use them plus new spells we don't know yet
ranged has bows <_<
I don't think it's too much to ask for a few throwing weapons or something

Yes crossbows take a long time to reload, your point being? This isn't about crossbows and taking a long time to reload doesn't mean that they couldn't be made viable in some way, they could stretch reality a bit and make it not take so long, anyway this is about adding some variety to ranged combat which has none so far beyond bows. Not necessarily crossbows.

I like the idea of throwing axes, it fits the atmosphere. Never been big on crossbows really so its not a big deal to me, but it is kind of hard to get variety in ranged weapons

I imagine we all have our preferences, but if they developers themselves said they want to redefine combat from previous elder scroll games then the ranged weapon department is a prime candidate.

Yea I agree with you, im also starting to think about slingshots in Skyrim, I think they would be a nice ranged weapon if included, and you can pick up ammo off the ground for your slingshot if needed.

I never thought of a slingshot, I probably wouldn't use it but that is a good idea :goodjob:

Ooh, this might never be implemented, but I would like to see bolas! A non-magical way to debilitate enemies for thieves and warriors.

Throwing weapons, dart guns, crossbows, alchemical bombs

In that order:

Like: mr ninja.

Don't like: too tribal for my tastes.

Don't like: a trigger mechanism just doesn't feel right in the TES universe, even if it was in Morrowind (that isn't much of an argument anyway because cliff racers and blonelords were in Morrowind as well), because even though magic is blamed for the impediment of Nirn's technological advancment, I REALLY don't think that everyone in Tamriel is so stupid that they can't modify a trigger mechanism to handle priming a small amount of explosive inside a metal pipe given that 204 years have passed since crossbows first appeared. I just don't see crossbows making it into the game without simple firearms with prepackaged charges showing up... sorry.

and lastly.... Bombs? FUDGE YEAH.
