A more "Realistic" Nord

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 11:55 pm

Both, but with a significant offset towards no horns. Not sure what the lore says about it. But if lacking, should tend more towards the realism aspect and low fantasy than high fantasy weirdness.

A horned helment by itself is NOT unrealistic.

A bit unpractical while fighting though.

This.

"Pure" nord armour could very well have horns, some nordic helmets in Morrowind had them so it wouldn't be too far off lore-wise. But each and every helmet shouldn't, less is more also applies to fantasy.

OP... you're under the impression that such a helmet design isn't in the game already. All we've seen of the game's various armor sets is ONE SET, and we don't have a clue whether it's a common or rare type. For all we know that helmet is THE helmet of the Dragonborn, or it's something entirely common. Yet that still doesn't exclude the fact that there could be helmets similar to the reality of Nordic culture. In fact, look at the helmets of Oblivion - such designs and ideas were used all throughout. So I would be surprised if such a design doesn't make it.

Correction: We've seen more than one set, my bad. But naturally we haven't see all of them. Hell, we probably haven't even seen a quarter of them.

you sir, is one of the reasons i don't enter in this forum anymore, first off, pointless threads asking stupid things that PROBALY would ruin the game, and people who keep telling us about how he things the game will be ruined without this thing, but that thing WILL ruin the game, and of course, [censored] WAITING 7 MOUNTHS,, DEFINITLY I CAN'T WAIT!

Well, the guy in the trailer obviously is a dork wearing that horned helmet and thinking he is so cool to not wear a shirt even though it's winter. But I think there should be dorks in the game, as long as not all of them a that way.

how about instead of making helms with horns, having the ability to take off the teeth (of large creatures) and horns (of medium sized and smaller creatures) or wings (of small creatures) and use them to enchant your helmet for some kind of more awesome effect than just a normal enchantment?

Horned Nord helmets are more Lore friendly, with all those horned trolls around.

I want realistic Nords, but I don't mean helmet wise, I mean facially.

The Nords in Oblivion looked ridiculous. When I think Nord, I don't instantly think of a tall man with a huge squashed nose. Their noses couldn't have looked less Nordic if they had tried.

The facial features of this guy look more like a Redguard with light skin than a Nord.

If the Nords are based on the ancient Scandinavians like Vikings, then they should be tall and well built yes, but also have normal Northern European features, something huge lips and mouths certainly aren't.

I don't like the looks of the horns, and they just seem to be a weak spot up for some grabbing or something. But I don't mind if some helmets have them.

What I want is some ridiculous wings at the top of the helmet, like the dudes at Minas Tirith have.

Lol those Minus Tirith guys were a bit too over the top and were the "royal" gaurds the other normal soldiers looked cool though. I think horns look ridiculous, however there seems to be a vast number of people who do want them so yeah put them in but don't shove em down our throats only give them to Clan leaders and bandit ring-leaders ect. What would be cool is if you're wearing a helm and are in firth person it should obscure your view slightly but i doubt that'll happen somehow.

im just happy that bethesda was smart enough to have the horns facing downward. its bad enought that an enemy can still grab your helmet by the horns and break your neck........if they were curving upwards a sword or mace hitting there would kill you as it pulled you neck to the side..........

honestly do they ever think about hiring a medieval combat expert so they dont make stupid looking weapons and armor.

for me its not so much that vikings didnt wear them as in its just basic common sense. you dont have things sticking out of your helmet that an enemy can easily grab hold of or that get caught on branches or other equipment.

If I were a self-respecting Nord, I wouldn't be putting horns on my helmet, I would be drinking out of them.

Yeah but this isn't vikings this is the Nords it is fiction

AMEN!!! I dont see any links regarding the correct dipictions of dragons or magic. It is a video game, and it HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH VIKINGS.

This is not a viking game, and I dont know where people are getting this idea. This may be a shocker to some people, but the NORDS are actually NOT VIKINGS. I know, amazing isnt it. As a matter of fact, vikings come from real life. Nords, argonians, and elves come from a make believe TES world.

The game is not about vikings, whatsoever. Just because it takes place in the north, and features a horned helmet in the trailer gives it no links whatsoever to the vikings of our real world. So as far as the correct depiction of vikings, forget about it. There arent vikings in TES, so why would be worry about depicting them correctly.

Not to mention the helmet in the trailer is an example of MANY armor options. Chances are, they will have something that resembles a real viking helmet, so you viking fanatics should be OK.

And for the record, vikings are gay.

Its really getting annoying, and Im sorry. I dont want to hear vikings and TES again. Period.

This game has nothing to do with vikings. There are not vikings in TES. Even if their are simularities between real world vikings and in game nords, they are not the same thing. And for the horned helmet complaint, regardless of whether the vikings actually wore horned helmets.....

This is how vikings have been depicted for hundreds of years. When you see horned helemt, you think viking. I dont see a normal armor helmet and think viking, whatsoever.

So if I was making a game and I WAS going for a viking feel, I would use the horned helmets regardless of what history says, because that is what people will recognize.

Vikings considered magic cowardly and unmanly. Women were magicians, not men.

- so no male magic users in Skyrim?

Vikings didn't have platemails. Nothing heavier than chain-hauberks, or in the east, lamellar-mail.

- so no plate in Skyrim?

Vikings didn't have maces, warhammers, crossbows, two-handed swords, etc, etc.

- so only one-handed swords, hand-axes, knives, spears, and pole-axes in Skyrim?

Magic is in fact unreastic and doesn't work.

- so the female magic users in Skyrim wave their hands but nothing happens?

Come on. It's a FANTASY game, and Nords are Nords, not Vikings.

Often Samurai Kabuto have horns, antlers, and other things coming off of it so to say they never existed in RL is bull. I'm sure SOME vikings did have horns on their helm where else would the Idea come from. It could have been a status symbol.

Maybe, but horned helmets were mostly used for rituals.

The idea comes from two things.

1. The 18th excavation of a couple of ceremonial bronze-age helmets, thought to be viking-helmets. As it turned out, they were not. They are further removed from the Viking-period than a Boing 747, dating from around 1500 BC.

2. The romantic depiction from the 19th century, inspired by Wagner and the recent discovery of the Icelandic Sagas. The same pictures that depicts "vikings" dressed in uncut furs, with naked legs, one foot wide belts, swinging over-sized doublebladed axes. All, I am afraid, pure imagination, or in other words, fantasy. They didn't use any of these things, and not a single viking-period helmet with horns has ever been found, nor depicted on the many contemporary picture-stones. Sorry.

in other words: Vikings did not wear any of these things, but Nords do!

Exactly! And the trailer depicts a 'ritual' of slaying a dragon. Lets just assume he was only wearing that for that helmet for the 'dragon slaying' ceremony.......
