A more "Realistic" Nord

"European Bronze Age and Iron Age helmets with horns are known from a few depictions, and even fewer actual finds. Such helmets mounted with animal horns or replicas of them were probably used for religious ceremonial or ritual purposes."

http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/manufacturing/text/viking_helmets.htm

"During the Viking age, helmets were typically fairly simple: a bowl with a prominent nose guard, as shown in the photo of a reproduction helmet to the right. One thing to note: Viking helmets had no horns. There is no evidence that Viking era helmets ever had horns."

So, my point is, after reading about the myth of "Viking horned helmets" and realizing that they were not used in warfare - for those of you who did not already know - why continue to use them in Skyrim? Is it just because that's the fantasy side to Nordic culture that is too ingrained into our heads to eradicate? Or just because you think it looks cool? I understand a lot of people like horned helmets, but what about those of us who think they're stupid for a serious warrior to wear into a fight? I know modding would suffice to fix the problem, but that's not the point I'm getting at. I just would really like for there to be "ceremonial Nord helmets" (with horns or wings or whatever) and "practical Nord helmets" that are the simple version a character would wear. A helmet to protect his face and not weigh him down or unbalance his movements because of objects jutting out from the sides. Both could have the same stats so that you wouldn't have to choose between them based on your taste. They would just look and be called differently, but still offer the same protection and stats in-game.

It's not too late to add in a few helmets into the game. It wouldn't effect anything besides the look of the character. I think this game looks amazing so far besides the dumb helmet, that's my only complaint.

Edit: I know this game is a work of fiction. All I'm asking is to bring a little realism into the helmets. In my opinion, horns look bad. And yes I know that Nords are a fictional race, but they are obviously heavily influenced by the Viking-Age Scandinavian peoples.

It's a fantasy game, it doesn't need to be historically accurate. Nords are not actually vikings. Horns look cool, that's reason enough, I'm sure there'll be plenty of hornless helmets for you to wear.

Nords are a fictional race based in a fictional world. Real world history does not apply. They could have horns growing out the sides of their skull, for all I care.

I know it's fiction. Ever stop to think where the Nords come from?

For sure. This isn't some historical combat sim. I like a bit of flair. I don't think the peoples that provide inspiration for the argonians had scales.

Agreed. I would expect that not all Nords have horned helmets. Sure it's fiction, but it just doesn't make sense if every warrior has a horned helmet, as such things are hard to create and meant only for great warriors.

Sure, we see the Dragon Born wearing one, but what about the countless Nord enemies he will face on his travels?

Nords aren't vikings. Nords are a fictional race created by Bethesda. It's not real life.
Linking wiki pages to things that have to do with anything other than the TES universe/lore is irrelevant.

The Nords are based on a lot more than just the Vikings. They're also heavily influenced by other fantasy universes, including Conan, which does feature horned helmets.

As far as realism, I don't see why having horns on your helmet would be unrealistic? Its not an accurate portrayal of Viking culture, of course, but these aren't the Vikings. A horned helment by itself is NOT unrealistic.

Vikings couldn't cast spells either, I think we should remove spellcasting altogether for realism.

Well, I don't mind horns as long as they don't overdo it with them (ie. every other bloody helm having them only because it's Skyrim).

Well for one as others have said Nords=/=Norseman and are not the same. Besides when dealing with fantasy often http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool applies over realism. Besides as long as the horns arn't too long I don't really have a problem with it and its not the case with nearly every helm in the game.

TBH I don't really care about how the helmets would be and how historically accurate they are :/

I liked them both upside and downside :)

Skyrim. But, hey, if you wan't realism, why don't you go play a game without dragons, spells, goblins, elfs, etc.

Nords aren't Vikings. They don't need to follow their path. Horned helmets are cool, thats enough reason to use them.

I don't like the looks of the horns, and they just seem to be a weak spot up for some grabbing or something. But I don't mind if some helmets have them.

What I want is some ridiculous wings at the top of the helmet, like the dudes at Minas Tirith have.

You really care this much for "historical" accuracy in a game where a talking cat can shoot a fireball at a dragon?

I think thats taking the "realism" argument just slightly across the line. There is very little 'realism' in games for many reasons. I mean honestly, most people wouldn't be able to run in REAL armor... You also wouldn't be carrying around much of anything at all in your "inventory". There are many aspects to a game that do require some 'suspension of disbelief' or people wouldn't find it that much fun. Something as harmless as helmets with horns is not that big of a concern. You can feel free though not to wear any such helmets in the game, since they are 'ceremonial' only.

I'm personally not a fan of horned helmets on humans (they look kinda clumsy and awkward) but I'm still all for them since this is fantasy.

And while we're on the subject of nord armors and helmets, it would be awesome to wear a big fur mantle.

Problem: Someone tries to grab your helmet by the horns.
Solution: Use that sword you're lugging around and kill them.

Problem solved.

It seems you have never played a FANTASY game before. Bethesda could have made the Nords with an Asian culture because this is FANTASY. Get over it.

I think a helmet with horns is OK and realistic as well, The Teutonic knights had helmets with wings and they didn't even needed to be vikings
