More Settlement building options!

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 12:58 am

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give my feedback on the Settlements feature. I personally think it is one of the coolest additions to the game, but I feel as though it is currently somewhat limited in the options given to you.

I can also be quite frustrating to get a structure to 'snap' together when placing structure pieces. Having things 'snap' together is an absolute god-send to calm my frustrations about things not fitting together or not being equal and exact, but sometimes the 'snap' just doesn't work, and it isn't easy to tell why.

My experience: I had finished constructing my 3 story building in Sanctuary when I decided to give myself a balcony, after placing the floor for the balcony I realized I forgot my roof :D haha I had to remove a couple of pieces of structure to place a couple of prefabs with a roof, and then when I tried to replace those structure pieces, they just wouldn't go back in. Took me an hour to rework the entire place to get them all to place nice, but I had removed my balcony floor pieces in the process, and then I couldn't get them to 'snap' back in again!!! the annoying thing was that my balcony had not changed at all, not the dimensions, not the pieces used, not the placement, nothing had changed, but for some reason it wouldn't 'snap'.

After another hour, it finally all snapped back into place again, but the final kick in the dike, was that I didn't actually change it. I just deleted a few pieces, replaced them, then the floor started working.

EDIT: Thought I'd start a list based on comments.

  • More building item options.
    • concrete structures
    • walls with windows
    • more floor types
    • more turrets
    • robot guards
    • refrigerators
    • better looking/more stylish structures
  • Item blockage detection. (highlight objects that are blocking your placement of an item or structure)
  • Lockable doors and containers.
  • Option to turn off 'snap' feature and allow items to overlap.
  • Ability to remove bushes and other clutter from settlements. (Let's face it, those dead bushes aren't appealing at all, neither are those big bush walls in Sanctuary)
  • Build an item that would allow you to detect in-coming Raider attacks before they happen. So you could fast travel back in time to prepare for the attack. Rather than just showing up mid-fight.

Sounds like that was a headache! I'd like them to add some other items to build as well! Maybe some concrete turreted bunkers, or turreted snipers nests!

I want to add refrigerators. Also, Neon signs would be awesome.

One thing that irks me is that you can't stock the Nuka Cola machine with Nuka Cola. They don't fit! :( I tried a few times and they just stayed red, no matter how I tried to place them.

Hopefully this is not a spoiler for anyone, but you can actually unlock more things to build by finding books, similar to finding Grognak the Barbarian comics. So far I've unlocked the ability to build white picket fences and outdoor patio furniture. I really hope there's more. :)

There is only 5 of those in total. And they unfortunately don't extend much further then small out door pieces :(

Being able to remove more clutter/buildings from settlements would be great especially those dead bushes parked around everywhere. I also really hope they add more buildings that are less shanty town looking. I mean I know its the wasteland and all but i'd love to be able to build something that resembles an enclave fortress or something. Saying that though I am absolutely loving the new base building feature. :goodjob:

it'd be great to be able to turn off snapping and to allow things to over-lap each other, also making enemies come from outside of the settlement to attack would be very important (i built all my settlements to be defended from outside attacks, not teleporters!)

edit: 2 more things, let me scrap the ugly ruins and let me build with more stuff (preferably in a better looking style, i might be a scavenger but i am a scavenger with design sense)

I sort of wish it was like Skyrim. Where you could pick objects up and drop them. That would make it easier.

A Recycling Craft Station is a must have!

Just Drop anything you want to recycle into the Station, click the Button, and everything gets broken down!

Also, if a Settler grabs some Gear to use in a fight they must PUT IT BACK WHERE THEY FOUND IT.

I am currently trying to track down all my Provisioners to find out which one is wandering the Wasteland in my Power Armor. This is not fun.

Remove the Fusion Core from the Power Armor when you are not using it. Then no one will take it. Raiders can also steal it so be careful.

Doesn't work, if you tell a companion to get into Power Armour without a fusion core they can easily get into it and move around fine.

Reason being is that without a Fusion core, your character can still move with it on, just slower, and no use of VATS.

Also another note.

By holding the Take key, default E) Take on PC will allow you to physically pick up items.

We can still do it, they haven't removed that feature.

* All settlers must have names once they join a settlement.

* My people assigned to crops should take some time from their busy schedule of hitting walls with hammers for half a day to actually harvest their crops and put them into the workshop storage (just like my scavengers do). I am a freaking General, they owe me their life and I have better things to do than harvesting.

* There must be a window to manage settlers: see what each one is doing, where he/she is assigned to, and to order him/her to do something

* There must be a window listing all assets where a settler can be assigned, from which I could drill down into a list of settlers and assign from there

* There must be a list of everything that draws power from each generator

Once this is done, one may consider that the feature is complete and that settlements are manageable.

i'm surprised there isn't a merged sticky thread about settlement building suggestions yet, this must be the 3rd or 4th (including http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1549184-suggestions-for-settlement-building/) thread this week

i just want a way to manage people better.

and equip settlers from a main menu rather than going up to each one swapping out inv etc. especially provisioners, who could be anywhere.

santuary needs the borders changed. It should be a rectangle like some of the others.

Personally I wish they would of given us 1 settlement and the ability to build where ever we wanted.(within reason) I have found several places that would be perfect, but are not settlement areas. Lots of the gunner areas are good places to setup one has power already there.

I would love to be able to combine both red rocket and santuary as one large settlement, but you can't remove allot of the stuff in between.

Yeah it's really annoying when you spent a lot of time setting up defenses for the game to completely by-pass them...

Has anyone come across double/two person beds? Like can they be unlocked through picket fence magazines or anything?

Because if there are none, I'd like to add a request for two person beds to the list, just to make the Lover's Comfort bonus easier and more immersive to get.

Built a junk fence around the pit stop settlement and on one side some floors with walls for protection. It was quite funny to see when mutants attacked that the settlers actually used the built stuff, because more ran up the stairs to shoot out through the gaps over the junk fence. Only disappointment was that it was not possible to lock the junk gate for example by assigning a settler to bar it. Because what's the purpose of a gate, if you can't lock it?? Stopped playing soon after that because of the settlement size limit. It doesn't increase with new settlers, so all the built stuff is wasted.

Settlement suppliers can be assigned without having a brahmin, so where do they get it?? And they don't have ascorts assigned for protection.

It's neither possible to move settlers to other settlements.

There's not enough material inside settlements when scraping cars, it seems a little odd that they can't be scraqed if they are just outside the settlement.

Also odd that the game don't make any difference to dirty and purified water for settlements.

The farm settlement could use a big pit in the construction, so when ghouls attack, they would fall into it like pets.

Thinking in theme of replaying the game, there are some settlement stuff which would be quite boring to redo in a restart, and one is fencing the whole settlement and another to find every new settler and equip them with cool weapons. It would be easier if there were some construction settlers and a dialog to tell them what kind of fence and to which side the gate entrance of the settlement, and who would spend time then doing all that slow stuff. how equipping all settlers with cooler weapons could be easier? Dunno.

It's also odd that you are stuck with raiders as enemies. Because obviously there's no gaming in settlement defences if they do not get attacked and raided, and since you are a settler, they can only be enemies. It's like the game has decided you are police and of course that is boring without criminals. But in a post-apocalyptic world it's not like that.

Yeah id like more steel pieces to build with like stairs, guard posts, doors etc..... It's not very sensible to have a metal building with wood towers and defense walls and doors..... I feel there could be a better variety. Other than that the NPCs could stay at the damn posts they're assigned to. I'm tired of NPC's sleeping on watch leaving the guard post unattended. But honestly there are fixes that need to happen for settlement building... I enjoy it alot. Just really buggy

I think there should be options for building better houses, but they should require some kind of skill system. When I would build a house, it would properly look like those in Fallout 4 now, but I do know people who could do this better.

And in the end, people could build better houses some 1000 years ago with far less then people have in Fallout 4. In FO4 you have all this ruins with a lot of bricks for example. After WW2 in Europe and in more recent times people often used bricks from ruins to rebuild houses. Why not in FO4? IMHO it is essential to build something that can at least protect you from the elements and all those nasty creatures, so it is a matter of survival to build better homes and not luxury IMHO.

But doing so should require time,

Aside from this, we need building elements that can deal better with uneven grounds. Way to often something I have build is hanging somewhere in the air.

I hope it gets extended, maybe a one-click "remove all shrubs and grass from workshop zone", and an eraser tool to remove non-recycleable house and corpses.
