Right... Found the event viewer, forced it to spit some information...

from 08 July till 18 August 189 events like this:

Around beginning of July:faulty application Oblivion.exe, version 1.20416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00175ba9, process id 0x17f0, application start time 0x01f5ae519ee.

Last few after UOP updated to 3.1.0 and I started experiencing lag when loading areas:
18 August:faulty application Oblivion.exe, version 1.20416, time stamp 0x462392c7, failing module unknown, version 0.0.0, time stamp 0x0000000 exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000000, process id 0x12cc, application start time 0x01c9018995fe04f7.

Of course this does mean nothing to me but atleast now I know how to report CTD... I hope.

When asked the eventvwr for details, it said:

Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

Can someone figure out these Error messages?

http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html - This may or may not help with your problem of lagged area loads. Read over what they have to say. The faulty RAM and video driver issues are the most likely reasons Oblivion would generate that exception code.

Good idea for a thread topic, nice one.

Any CTDs I have suffered I have managed to work my way through using this forums search menu or just through trial and error LO. I do however get the annoying CTD on exit every time though, but with over 150 mods installed I guess it comes with the terrritory. Does the "halt" command stop these CTDs?

Is there any way this thread can be stickied?

You may also be interested in an OBSE plugin by scanti, that saves a dump file on crash and try to save the game. Look http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=839527&st=155.

Yay i just checked out my reliability and its shot up to 7.73 from 1.52 in july mainly because of all less crashes on exit from oblivion:D. I think the crash on exit matches up to the following log.

Note this is a vista log not XP.
Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000cee0b, process id 0xa44, application start time 0x01c88abd52effc07.

Many crashes can be simply fixed by changing a load order, by removing a buggy mod. ( Of course I'm excluding any hardware or computer software bug that are outside the scope of Oblivion. )
For the other type of crashes, some can be helped.

Personally I've encountered a specific crashing bug before that I could not solve by mod tweaking. So I fixed it with an OBSE plugin. You can read about it http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=857320. And then I was able to continue my savegame instead of simply be forced to abandon it.

Other kind of errors may be worked around too.

Nice work, Elys. I happen to enjoy your uncapper mod. I can't download your referenced crash fix, because I keep getting "webpage does not exist".

My last Oblivion CTD had a faulty address of 0x052fc96d

"Faulting module unknown".

There is a new version of CrashShield out, the link has just been updated ^^

I've red all the posts here.
I see many of them are from people who have just "discovered" the EventViewer. And of course for lot of these past events, there is no idea at which game moment they happend.

From now on, now that you can look in the Event Viewer ( if you can't see the immediate error message when crashing ) it would good to also report what you were doing in Oblivion at the crash time.
Because as I said many times "crashes on Oblivion quitting" are legion and not critical since they do not block character progression, and there is workarounds already to quit Oblivion quickly.
But crashes happening during gameplay are more the ones to fix because they are criticals for the character progression :)

Take a look at your http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427. One of the things that really pisses me off about Windows is how it hides critical errors from the end-user. The Event Log can be a bit cryptic, but take a look at the bottom and see if you can't make heads or tails out what was happening when the error occurred. One common culprit is Microsoft Update but it could any number of other things as well.

More on the http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html for XP users.

1. Many errors are created by buggy mods or wrong Plugin Load Order. Try to isolate the eventual mod responsable of the crash. There is already lot of related topics on the forum about this stuff.
If you still are experiencing crash after than then go to step 2.

2. Learn to use the Windows Event Viewer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/, For http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm
and also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947321/

3. When Oblivion has just crashed, open the Event Viewer and look for the most recent errors in the Applications Pane.
There you will spot an error like:

Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000cee0b, process id 0xa44, application start time 0x01c88abd52effc07

Then what you must report here are
- the 3 green parts I have highlighted
- the general context of where/when it happens ( while exploring a Dungeons, while fighting, while sleeping, etc ... )
- and if the error seems to happen randomly, or if you can easily reproduce it.

DO NOT REPORT ERROR IF:

You are using the Direct2Drive version.
The faulting module IS NOT Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416 ( pay attention to the version number)
If the crash happens when you quit Oblivion.

Here is some more info. All errors in event log (system) says:
"Source:Application Popup"
"Category:None"
"EventID: 26".

hmm... this is always the same with every oblivion crash.

And then comes error message like...

Application popup: Oblivion: Oblivion.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00700619" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

i always just figured the game or some of the mods im using contain a memory leak, the more traveling i do the quicker the game will crash, i can also see the game get pregressivly slower.

its gotten to the point where i can predict within 1-2 minutes when the game will ctd.

Hi Elys,

I receive this error quite frequently (Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module d3dx9_27.dll, version 9.8.299.0, fault address 0x000d2eaa.) the crash occurs when I exit a building. I thought it was tied to Screen Effects and Enhanced Seasons, but I disabled that and it still occurs.

thanks

The event viewer always shows the following error message whenever my Oblivion CTDs:

Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7,faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00300930, process id 0xd14, application start time 0x01c9032a0dee2c32.

It almost always occurs randomly during area transitions, particularly in cities and between indoor/outdoor cells. Last night, this error occurred while fighting an Ancient Gargoyle at the end of Sideways Cave.

A proper report :icecream:

Just to let know that I pay attention to this topic, but I'm just busy working on something else for now. I will go back at CrashShield stuff soon enough :)

A common serious crash error by the way is due to an interaction between two common mod components:

RemoveAllItems and Non Playable Items such as tokens on NPCs. One mod may use tokens to dictate something and another mod may use RemoveAllItems for whatever purpose, however, if RemoveAllItems is called on an equipped-non-playable item, calling RemoveAllItems will crash the game.

I've just run into a recurring error in my newest save file. Six errors, all with the same exception code and fault offset, as well as one other error that I guess must have started this whole problem.

faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, ... exception code 0xc00000fd, fault offset 0x0058c77d,

The first time it crashed with the above error I had just closed the console after attempting to heal my horse with ModAV2. When I got back in and reloaded my save I tried to quicktravel, but it crashed as soon as it had loaded the loading screen with this error:

faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, ... exception code 0xc00000fd, fault offset 0x0058c7fe,

Five more times I tried to quicktravel with the same result, after a computer reset too. Then I tried quicktraveling just up the road (from Weynon Priory to the Chorrol Stables, as opposed to, say, traveling from Weynon Priory to the Imperial City.) and no error. None of my other saves have this problem.

Not much of a loss if the save is just corrupt, but thought it was worth posting in this thread.

How do you get the expanded info? I only have this much info displayed:

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, fault address 0x000fa0f0.

How do I get timestamp information?

Anyway, here are the errors I get w/ corresponding actions:

Area

Heading west from the imperial isle, before you get to the middle between skingrad and chorrol, just before Elenglynn.

TOD

Dark, raining, thunder + lighting provided via AWS mod.

Situation

Flying on my shadow drake, about 50 foot of the ground, just above the tree's

Mods/Situation?

I have QARLS redem installed, 2048 LODS, 50% landscape "clean-up" mod )tried 75% version, still crashes) Lots other graphics mods, better foliage, better trees, harvesting, low poly grass, diverse low poly grass etc, immersive night lights etc, darker nights, AWS mod in full action + 180 other mods

On this save...its purple, a perfectly synced save w/ bash batched + merge and (AFAIK) Everything in the right order

Repeatable crash?

Yes, within 2 mins of flying across landscape...OH! Also happens even when just walking across the same way

Error codes

All within 3/5 min time stamps, can someone tell me how to get max info from this? Anyway here's what the event logs error showed at the time i'm pretty sure:

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, fault address 0x000dfa7f. (x1)

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, fault address 0x0011fe90. (x6)

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000. (x1)

Thats what I got in that session. I also get lots of others like:

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x2f05f110.
Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x000009b4.
Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, fault address 0x002a8809.
Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0002001c.

A lot of these are random ones I believe...some are instant quits but some are just random dungeon crawls, random spell casts maybe, random weather? (AWS Seems to drain performance a lot...)

BUT!!!!!

The majority of my crashes are linked with "exploring outside" like just wandering around...usually I get a timestamp of around 1-5 mins before a random crash. Unfortunately it's not specific...i could wander off in any direction and could predict it.

I press TDT in game to look at the loading tasks etc...when the game stutters those stats are through the roof!!!! But...i have a very powerful computer so I don't get it (engine, oblivion's fault?) I use AEVWD as well.

I can't pinpoint it...crashes may be because of the amount of rendering the game is trying to do? I do have fLODDistance to something quite high, 100-150,000 for example but...ahh I dunno :S.

I'll go and get a fresh one now for you :)
