More stuttering and occasional screen freeze since 1.2 patch : Fallout 4

Twice now since the patch, I have had my screen lock up while playing Fallout 4. Both times my character was outside, at night, and jumping. I was playing in 3rd person mode. The screen locks mid-jump animation. Sound will continue to play but everything else is nonresponsive. DxDiag is below.

The first time, when my character was at the excavation site near Sanctuary, I was able to alt-tab out and then close Fallout 4 from task manager.

The second time, when my character was outside the Corvega factory, the system locked up hard and was completely nonresponsive (sound cut out after it finished playing the file) and I had to hit the reset button and reboot.

I've also noticed considerably more stuttering in many outside areas, especially at night--all ever since the 1.2 patch. I am wondering if it has anything to do with shadow rendering or some lighting effect. It was especially odd that it happened at the Corvega factory the second time since they were supposed to have made improvements to performance (ironically, the first time I went to Corvega, pre-patch, I had few problems, though I did think I had a crash there once--but otherwise smooth play).

I am just a scoche above minimum requirements, but still at least meet if not exceed them.

I am not running with any mods, nor have I modified any ini files. I have used dev console commands on occasion to fix the Radio Freedom bug (as that is a gamebreaker) and to disable persistent corpses in settlements.

My graphics settings are set to Medium, and were before the patch. I may set them to Low and see what happens, and may fiddle with some of the specific lighting settings as well and see if that helps.

As you can see from the DxDiag below I have an NVidia card, but I uninstalled GeForce Experience because it was causing a number of problems with my computer, so the issues that service causes are not the problem. My drivers, to the best of my knowledge, are up to date (I installed the "game ready" driver that came out right before Fallout 4 did that I believe is the latest).

Mainly throwing this out there as a heads up and to see if anyone else had had a similar issue.

Not sure what's up with the RAM, but whatever's going on with the RAM was going on before the patch, and I was not having issues with the game before the patch.

In other words--even if the RAM contributes to the problem, it cannot be the sole cause. The problem in the software occurred when the software changed; ergo, something's up with the software.

I am not having any other notable performance issues with my machine (apart from a brief, recent, fixed issue with my Internet) or other software--just the game. Which again, started only after the patch installed.

Also, it's a graphical issue, so--forgive my ignorance on this--I'm not sure how regular RAM could be the sole issue here.

I've got no unusual processes running in the background--just the usual Windows stuff and antivirus, drivers, etc. Besides the game, the largest eater-of-memory is the Steam client.

Also, just for the record, "she."

I will be upgrading RAM soon (something I was planning to do anyway, as I'd noticed the half-RAM being used before) but I expect there will still be a different kind of issue at the root of this.

ETA: I do appreciate the responses, BTW. Thanks. I just think there's more to it than the RAM, but what you pointed out is still of course noteworthy.

Still you don't know it isn't RAM. They may have changed some memory allocation stuff.

With 4gb you dont have much available. Fallout is a 64-bit program. Recommended is 8gb. I would try to figure out what is happening with that first.

It isn't necessarily a graphical issue. Yes it is freezing, but that could be a number of things. Not saying it IS Ram however these things can be very difficult to pinpoint over a text based forum.

WHat does your event viewer say?

Also have you tried a game cacher verify?

As what jasper1979 has mentioned, its good to rectify all problems and have your system running at stable condition. 8gb detected but only 4gb usable and not knowing what happen to the other 4gb? It could be faulty RAM or RAM socket or other issue? FO4 minimum recommendation is 8gb, you are running it below minimum spec at 4GB.

Why, are you sure - you system uses the whole 8GB of ram before the patch?

It could be that even if you have 8GB of ram installed, the second memory module is not recognized somehow...

Go to your BIOS and check if your whole Ram (8GB) is recognized.

Also try to reseat your ram and install it again.

Gamewise, I set everything visual settings to "low" and all stuttering/freezing stopped. Shame I can't play on Medium like I did before the patch, but whatevs. Doesn't look that different, really. Again, I largely posted this in case anyone else had similar issues. If someone reads this, try fiddling with the graphics settings. I expect it's a lighting/shadow thing since all the issues were happening in-game at night.

As for the RAM, don't worry folks, I'm working on it. I recognize it's not good for the machine overall to just leave it like that. Mark5917, you're right, it might be a hardware issue, and I may just upgrade the RAM which should solve that AND make most software perform better.

Well, swaetheart - we don't know that for sure. At least you can check your BIOS and try to re-install your ram modules.

Also you could just install the one memory module, and after the second one, and see if Windows recognizes your ram modules separately.

How many memory sockets has your Motherboard?

If it has four, on which memory banks have you installed your ram modules. So, some motherboards (especially older ones) are a bit picky about that.

Also a good idea, if you have changed any settings in your BIOS lately, reset your BIOS to the default settings.!
