More than one disk?

Post » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:54 pm

With more and more games putting more stuff into their worlds (like Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy to name a couple) Does it matter if the game has more than one disk to you?

This I think would mostly concern Xbox owners like myself. To me it really doesn't matter as long as there is a lot of content for me to do and explore like the previous ES games and everything looks great.

LOLZ all our blue rays are belong to us!!! :banghead:

jk dude, I think its a given that the xbox will have more than one disk. Idk how they will go about it but I cant imagine how they could keep everything on one disk without degrading the quality of the ps3 version.

We should NOT be limited to one disk. I remember an interview a long time ago (I think it was with Bluedev) where he said that there was to be a political quest line in Oblivion that would detail the difference between Colovia and Nibenay, and would allow the player to become the Duke of Colovia. Sadly, the XBox360 could only handle one disk at a time for some reason and that content was cut... for PC users as well :(. That would have been the quest line I would have enjoyed the most! Cyrodiil itself was very lacking in lore (except the history on the Ayleids), and showed no difference between Colovia and Nibenay.

Well, they made Mass Effect 2 on the 360 and it required two disks.

Yeah, I don't think it's a problem anymore. I just seem to remember some issue with having more than one disk on the 360 way back when. Maybe Microsoft was against it or something? Or perhaps those were the days before all 360's had hard drives (I think some used memory cards at release, no)? I can't remember :P.

I don't see what the issue is. I am on the 360, and I install it to the hard drive, so if I need 4 disks to install it to the HD, ok, still only need one disk to play the game. And that is just for a disk check and nothing else.

Again, I really don't care, I mean I am not lazy or anyting to get off my ass to switch a piece of plastic and I can understand how it takes ppl out of the game but hell before I switch the disc I can go and take a dump or something-___- or go get something to eat *not in that order* what i am trying to get across is I don't understand why it is any big deal at all even if it does take you out of the game, it is just that...A GAME!

If I were playing the console versions, I'd be annoyed by having multiple disks because I wouldn't want to have to get up and change the DVD on a regular basis, it wouldn't be so bad for more linear games, but in a free roaming sandbox game, I'd imagine it would start to seriously hurt the gameplay experience when you had to switch back and forth between disks whenever you get to a different part of the map, since I expect to play the game on PC though, it wouldn't be a problem, seeing as the multiple disks would only be needed during installation, once that was done, you'd only need one disk for the disk check when starting the game, most likely, so multiple disks would be just fine with me. So I say that if the game Bethesda wants to make is too big to fit on one DVD, they should go with multiple disks, rather than cut content to keep it down to one disk. Better to have to switch to a different disk during installation than know that Bethesda had to sacrifice some content they had wanted to add to ensure we wouldn't have to.

The only problem I could see multiple disks causing is that if the game was bigger, it would increase the amount of harddrive space the game takes up, but I'll find a way to clear up enough space, if necessary, even if it means deleting other games I don't want to uninstall yet.

If it means that Bethesda doesn't have to limit the amount of content in skyrim, i'm fine with that.

Main thing that would increase the number of disc would be textures, cutscenes (TES has none), and a LARGE variety of in game assets. I don't think we will see this for Skyrim. One disc should be enough really, and its not practical when it comes to Xbox. However couldnt they theoretically make you install disc 2 to your 360 HDD? A select few games do need a HDD and it would make more sense than to gimp PS3. The DVD release of the PC version should have multiple install disc. High res textures please?
P.S Do I care no. I'll be installing on PC. I do care if it effects sales though. I'd love to know how many 360 owners dont have an HDD.

Edit: Isnt Rage open world? I know that will come on multiple DVD's due to the Mega textures. If Im wrong correct me.

Actually I remember reading that same article, recently even and they did NOT cut it due to it not being able to fit on the disc. It was an early quest concept and it was cut because they thought the political element made it feel "too much like Morrowind". Sure, it's a totally BS reason because Morrowind was awesome but it was definitely not because they couldn't fit it on the disc.

Im ok if the game is shipped with 2 discs, one must be downloaded on the hard drive (xbox 360) and other for play.

I wouldn't mind it so long as I can install the one disc. on my HD and just use the other to play the game without switching discs.

Why did people even buy 360s with no HDDs?
PC has no problems, PS3 has no problems, doesn't even need the hdd, most 360s wouldn't have a problem either. Then there is the 360s with no harddrives, buy an overpriced 360 hdd or tough luck. Limiting content because of that minority wouldn't be a good idea. Then again, it might fit on one dvd anyway, don't HD-DVDs have 20 gig capacity? Not sure.

I believe most of the data on the DVD is Voice Acting. Voice acting takes up alot of space so if they cut the voice acting down, then more information
can be put it. Otheriwse why can't you have more than one disk? Just like installing Shivering Isles. Insert disk 2, install Shivering Isle and Knights of
the Nine, then just put in Disk One even if you don't install that to hard drive. Question is, why wouldn't you install to your 360 hard drive in the first
place? A bit faster load times, and no DVD being used, so less wear and tear.

It would not prevent me from buying the game. I have all the systems so I would most likely get it for the PS3.

PS3 have no problem with bluray.

PC have DVD9, which is 8 GB of compress file that act as installer. 1 Disc for that is already enough.

Xbox 360, well, dunno.

As long as there's only one play disc, they could have 10 install discs for all I care.

Doubt my PS3 blu-ray version will need more than one disk.

As for XBOX users, I don't think you'll have a disk swapping system. TES is built in an open world where you can do almost any part of the game at almost any time, so I think it will just have to do an installation or you'd be switching disks every 2 minutes depending on what content you're reaching.
