More Types of Guards

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:52 am

Guards in Oblivion were pretty boring. I would love to see more types:

Melee Guards
Mage Guards
Archer Guards
Healer Guards
Shadow Unit <---I think this is a pretty cool idea, they'd be used to take out high-risk targets. They'd be like a special ops squad.
Different Ranks <---They should have different armor, weapons, ability, certain ranks should have horses (if there are horses)
Diverse Guards
Hand to Hand Guards <---maybe if there's a monastery-type place or something...
Mounted Guards <--- If there are horse-drawn carriages, a horse in the trailer, and we still can't ride horse... I might be pretty disappointed.

I don't really care either way to be honest, but it sounds like the empire is having some trouble during this period of time. So I would hope Skyrim has much less Imperial presence than in the past.

I don't mind if all guards are of the same role, as long as they're not freaking clones of eachother. Oblivion was more or less Clone Wars Fantasy, everyone had the exact same face, more or less.

I would expect to see some less guards like we saw in the empire, and more local militia type units patrolling the towns. Neighborhood watch, citizens on patrol, and various other volunteer guards are what I would think we would find.

Will there even be Imperial Guards in Skyrim? After all the Empire has collapsed, and the influence of the Imperials must surely have declined

You'd imagine that the cities in Skyrim will be led by local clans or chieftains, and justice will be executed - quite likely in brutal ways - by locally appointed militia of some sort.

Hopefully, it will make the law enforcement feel more interesting than the somewhat generic guards in Cyrodiil

Quests to assist your friends to being recruited, or being recruited yourself would be neat. Or something like DA2, where your companion ended up being a guard.

And this is Skrim, BTW. Aren't Nords racist? Only Nord guards.

Melee Guards
Archer Guards
Diverse Guards
Ranger type Guards in the wilderness
Mage and high rank guards should be present but shouldn't be on patrol or just roaming around.
the rest are getting a bit specific and unnecessary in my opinion.
oh and all non-psychic too if you don't mind Bethesda
also no guard type for the whole of skyrim like the imperial guard just have the guards for the larger towns and the area surrounding them

Well I, for one, would rather have much less guards. As stated before, the Empire is losing its grip on Skyrim.

so fewer types? or a fewer amount? there can't really be fewer types than in Oblivion... and this thread isn't about having a greater number of guards, just more variety.

and they don't have to be Imperial guards. I don't know why anyone would be under that impression...

Fewer amounts. And most guards are part of the Imperial Legion, or Imperial Watch. With the exception of Vvardenfell's Great Houses.

If a person is guarding a town he/she is a guard. "guard" doesn't imply imperial legion or anything else for that matter.

But they are employed by the Empire. Poke a little into it and you'll find that the majority of guards receive their pay from the Empire. Regardless of city or region, since all of Tamriel is under Empire control.

maybe in Oblivion, but it's more likely there are going to be MANY guards that aren't on the Empire's payroll in Skyrim

All of Tamriel isn't really under the Empire's control anymore.

It's not like the cities can't make money for themselves, or that there aren't any hotblooded young men and women who would volunteer for such a service.

Maybe city-paid militia. But even in Morrowind, there were many Imperial guards. If some cities break away from the Empire, they will either have no law, or have an impromptu Nordic militia. Not actual guards.

what you think aren't "actual" guards are guards... as long as they guard, they are guards.

I don't really care about there combat variations but more so guard's personal variety and general personality, there should be kind guards, unbribeable and very corruptible guards, lazy guards, raciest guards.

Just because they are not "actual guards" doesn't mean that someone not on Imperial payroll, who is guarding a city or area, is not a guard. If they are guarding something they're still a guard.

I figure, with all the chaos, the guards are more likely to be more akin to local militia

But there will still be less guards. Not many people will decide to leave their jobs to be a guard after the Empire stops protecting the town.
