Is a Morning Star possible?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:36 pm

I'm wondering if it's possible to create a Morning star weapon for Oblivion. For those who don't know this is a lethal looking medieval mace like weapon with a short shaft and a long chain with a nasty metal ball with spikes on the end. I thought it might be fun to use one in the game. However I assume it would need a totally different model to anything used in the game. I assume no one has tried to do it because it is too difficult. Is it possible in theory?

Yes, that's just what I meant. I must have missed that mod. I will try it as soon as possible. Thanks.

What you are describing sounds rather like a flail then morning star. What CoolShady posted is as far as I know the only successful attempt for flails for the game. The problem with these weapons is that the physics of the game only work on static objects, that is why you can see chains in dungeons that clink and move (sort of) naturally, but the character hair or clothes are still as stiff as a board. So far I think there is not direct way to overcome this limitation as it is in the core of the game engine itself. The mod linked above workes due to some heavy scripting as far as I know.

I think it's possible(with some testing) to rig the weapon to arm bones or different bones on the skeleton, so in idle it moves a little, but if you perform actions the flail chain responds. I don''t think the weapon itself can be rigged, but a custom piece of apparel can be equipped with a script if you equip the weapon. The weapon itself has to be replaced with an invisible one in due course but that's not hard. May ruin the immersion a wee bit, but hey, if it works then it should be worth it. Better than a constantly flailing flail :)
