Wow, this thread isn't nearly as dumb as I was expecting it to be. Your title makes it look like you want us to rank them by quality, which is a really stupid thing to ask right now, given that Skyrim isn't even out.

Still, I don't feel comfortable with your scale. There are parts of LOTR that are gritty as hell. I don't see how it can be on the opposite end of the scale from "Gritty." Can we give Oblivion a negative score?

Duno til Ive played it.

I would have called Oblivion a lighthearted generic fantasy at first glance, and mostly it is, but then you get things like necrophilia references and a guy getting flayed alive. Morrowind is darker and overall more mature in tone, but Im not sure I would call it gritty. Fallout 3 was dark and gritty, but also very immaturely mature.

I tossed Fallout in there because its relevant.

I would consider Oblivion to be the most Lord of the Rings esque, but Skyrim might be a lot like it too, only with an emphasis on more Norse mythology.

Skyrim looks to be the most gritty, and I would even say most frighteningly realistic Elder Scrolls game. Oblivion looks pretty tame in comparison. I think Morrowind is much more comparable in looks to Skyrim, in my opinion.

I think Skyrim will be gritter at face value.

Oblivion you had to go looking for the grittiness.

Morrowind ... Hmm. That was pretty gritty really.Much more so than OB

Im curious i have always thought Morowind was in the top 5 RPGs of all time, even with how buggy it was. Do you think Skyrim will be in your top 5?

Let's just let this thread die... Otherwise it will start a inevitable war... A War that will just end when people start debating the "Definition of RPG".

I have no doubt what so ever that Skyrim will rank right beside Morrowind and Oblivion as my most favorite games of all time.

Personally, I expect to be more satisfied with Slyrim than I was with Oblivion but less satisfied with Skyrim than I was with Morrowind.

But I won't know anything for sure until I've played the heck out of Skyrim for several months.

I don't agree at all with your scale. Lord of the Rings is far more gritty than Game of Thrones. Also, everybody has a different notion of what a "generic medieval movie" is. If we're all using different criteria the discussion isn't going to mean much as far as I'm concerned.

Plus, I haven't even played Skyrim. How can I have an informed opinion about how it fits into these categories? Anything any one of us says about Skyrim at this point is said in ignorance...and is therefore worthless.

I hope it owns both Morrowind and Oblivion. I want this game to be a combination of both.

While in terms of the movies there was some effort to add some grittiness Lord of the Rings pretty much sets the standard for nongritty non moral ambiguity in pop fantasy.

Song of Ice and Fire conversely is almost the anti-Tolkien in it's approach to fantasy. It's War of the Roses+fantasy and all but defined for it's gritty approach.

Morrowind / Oblivion / Skyrim: essentially the difference is in the game atmosphere.
Each has a different atmosphere.
I think that developers do not harness or do not master the atmosphere because they do not think of it.
That is why the atmosphere is different between every game.
It is the details which build the atmosphere:
for example the echo of a wild shout, a sudden sandstorm, shiver with fear or be surprised, opened and attractive villages...
=> sometimes with Morrowind,
=> but never with Oblivion where the cities are closed for technical IT reason,

Morrowind was artistic, that is why a lot of people regrets it.
Obviously I do not know Skyrim, but I bet that its atmosphere will be different.
To master the atmosphere asks a lot of artistic talent, and certainly a lot of work (make open cities, computers are enough powerful!!!).

This is true to the extent that the rest of the world seems to have a vastly different notion of what "gritty" is in relation to literary genres than your own.
